Is this confirmed? In the UK, it’s easier to do this, but when making a film in the US, you have to deal with the union rules regarding this.

It looks gorgeous in the way Anderson sort of honed in that new, non-Steadycam style he’s adopted from The Master onward. A few dick jokes in the trailer, but the sort of emotion of teenage angst gives the impression there’s probably a hint of melancholy here (no surprise for Anderson). Bradley Cooper is screaming and breaking car windows in a gas station parking lot. Sean Penn seems to maybe be having some sort of relation with the young Haim girl judging by some of the body language they share. Tom Waits seems to be some sort of director. The big gag of the trailer is Cooper explaining that Barbara Streisand is his girlfriend and Cooper Hoffman can’t pronounce her name.

Admittedly, details about certain things are sort of hazy as this was the first trailer of the night and everyone decided to use the time this trailer was playing to find a seat and to stand right in front of me.

Any word on this getting 70mm prints like his last 3 films? MGM did strike some for No Time to Die

It’s only confirmed as much as you want to trust IMDB which does not have a cinematographer listed. Only cam operator and assist

The American Society of Cinematographers is really notorious for not taking kindly to directors who serve as their own DP's. Peter Hyams has served in both functions for all of his features. When he finally decided to get credit for his photography with 2010 in 1984, they turned down his application outright, and continued to do so every single time until he finally gave up many years later.

2010 was actually the first film where Hyams got the DP credit, and that was the case for all of his subsequent work. You might be thinking of this interview where Hyams says the ASC turned down his application for membership. Robert Rodriguez is also credited for the cinematography on a number of unionized films. Steven Soderbergh is an odd case but might be relevant here: he adopted the "Peter Andrews" pseudonym for his work as DP not because of the ASC, but because of the Directors and Writers Guilds—he didn't want to be credited multiple times and the Guilds wouldn't let him put his cinematographer credit on the same card as his director credit, since the DGA requires the director credit to come first and the WGA requires the screenwriting credits to come second. That wouldn't be an issue for someone like Anderson who writes his own films (and has always had multiple credits anyway, with a separate card for producing).

All that said, my guess is he's going to do the same thing he did on Phantom Thread and have no cinematographer credit on the grounds of collaborative effort. If he's not allowed to do that on a U.S. production, I dunno, maybe a pseudonym.

But clearly PT Anderson is a much higher profile than Peter Hyams. Even if ASC has issues with him I don't see how it will effect him or his productions in any way and why he would even care at this point

If Tom Waits is playing a director, it's likely the John Huston analogue who was part of the initial listing of parts when the film was announced. And I've read a rumor that Penn is indeed playing Alana Haim's father, and that Haim's character is a teenage/young-adult gossip columnist based on the real-life "Hollywood Kids".

I wouldn’t be surprised. I was told from someone in the know that on top of dual 35mm projection at the Vista (Tarantino’s new theater), they’re also installing 70mm. I wonder if they’re seperate or dual 35/70 projectors which are more costly but save space. Anyway, it makes sense at the Vista as it’s sort of the last regularly functioning large single-screen in the city. I’m always amused to think it was a porno theater in the 70s (gay and straight).

More theatres are getting the trailer and announcing it - the Coolidge Corner theatre in Brookline, MA just announced they have a 35mm print and will be featuring it before all their screenings for the remainder of Sept.

Cmon AFI Silver, gimme a reason to hike all the way up there...

Coolidge is only playing the trailer before any of this month's 35mm screenings. This has also been officially rated R for language, sexual material, and some drug use.

Wow, that trailer exceeded my already-souring expectations. I’m getting some strong 20th Century Women vibes in regards to the comic-pathos hybrid approach to youthful milestones in the 70s, albeit in a different milieu (also Jeremy, for those who have seen the recent Fun City blu)

Per the trailer, at least one of the other Haims are in it, Sean Penn is in it as Alana's father, and Tom Waits is doing a Daniel Plainview-level Huston impression

Happened to see this again on Saturday during a screening of Singin' in the Rain this Saturday at the New Beverly. I was amused to see that everyone applauded after the trailer as though a chunk of the audience paid to see this trailer.

If Tom Waits is the John Huston stand-in, it makes sense. He sounds sloshed as he's telling multiple cameras to turn on and seems to literally be throwing alcohol around.

No need to say much about what will be the most discussed film among cinephiles of this year, but it looks fantastic and anyone taking this as an opportunity to speculate about Anderson losing his fastball should look back at literally everything else he's ever written and directed. I'll be there day one. And if you spend all your idle time complaining about IP and franchises and superhero pictures: hey... an opportunity to support original stories at the movie theater, right here!

Certain other corners of the internet (some elements of Film Twitter at least) are a bit grumpy about how the trailer looks for generally stupid reasons (postulating that Cooper Hoffman got his part due to nepotism, saying it looks too derivative or mainstream, complaining about Anderson's use of Life On Mars as a "too obvious" trailer song...)
