A mix. Sometimes imminent titles have been strongly hinted by Criterion or contributors involved, sometimes someone might know something… much of the time it’s just guesswork and wishful thinking!

Yes. 8-)

Some people have heard things through the grapevine & are expecting them (ie. knowing someone who gets commissioned for artwork or seeing a director at a q&a mention something), others are more wishful thinking (things that have been OOP for a while, noticing restorations than have been done & hoping they've been licensed).

Wayyyy back in the day there were literal secret lists of known acquisitions that some of us knew about. Those of us who knew something didn’t say shit or allude to anything because we wanted to not piss off the leakers and get iced out in the future though, so I’m sure the same applies here. ie anyone who actually knows something won’t be “guessing” anyways (except Bressonaire, who does it so close to their announcements that it doesn’t really matter… but his brazenness is why we know he’s in the know!)

There are a lot of educated guesses, but some people try to conjure a desired title into existence.

I'd love to think that some of my guesses conjured their existence...maybe as much as a decade beforehand, but they did eventually make it in.

today is my birthday, so here is a list of wishes that are all genuinely realistic. I always mix mine on personal opinion but also realistic stuff I know has been restored, or is held by a studio Criterion usually works with. I would buy literally all of these releases

Lost in Translation (Sofia's b-day yesterday!)
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
Days and Nights in the Forest
The Secret Agent
The Sweet Hereafter
Petulia
Sweet Smell of Success
Z
Eclipse: Kazuo Hara's Naked Truths

‘Petulia’ would be a great addition to the collection.

I also look forward to other Julie Christie classics:

Darling (formerly on laserdisc);

The Go-Between;

and Fahrenheit 451.

Hoping that you get one of those titles announced, or at the very least the announcement today Ryan!

I have a ritual when they're announced. I shrink my browser to being really narrow, load the page and make a little scope with my hand to look through to click the 'Shop Now' button. I then scroll right to the bottom of the page. I then slowly scroll up and reveal two new releases at a time. It's alway exciting to see what might be released next...

I wonder will they be delayed this month because of the 30% off sale?

If anything, there's more incentive to announce titles because the 30% applies to preorders, so some people will inevitably add some of the new announcements into an order

Yeah this seems like a "licensor dragging their feet on cover art approval" situation. I'd bet it'll be resolved before the end of the day.

They literally announced this month’s releases on a Friday (February 13th).

And both Feb and March of 2025 were announced on a Friday.

Seeing they just posted a closet video on their instagram, I guess we aren’t getting anything till next week. Damn sorry Ryan.

It could be recency bias, but rarely does Criterion make announcements after 2:00pm EST. Also, their socials are usually inactive prior to an announcement being released. Dropping a closet video feels like something they want to gain interactions on for a bit and not to be overshadowed by announcements.
