Just because something is popular now (coming off a season I haven't heard many people say nice things about), doesn't mean that it'll be popular 3-4 years after the main series ends. There's sure to be a decline in people's interest coming eventually that might make the cost of making an A-list spin-off prohibitive if the ratings aren't there the way they were for the main series. Perhaps I'll be wrong (Harry Potter spinoffs are doing okay, I think?) but my hunch remains that this won't have legs unless it's limited in size and scope and cost.domino harvey wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 11:18 amHuh? The show's never been more popular, and there's no reason to expect a spinoff to bomb or fizzle out. Sure, it could, but be careful ascribing your own burnout to the public's

I actually thought like mfunk that the popularity of the show had slighlty faded over the couple of past years, or at least plateaued. But looking back at the viewer numbers, it seems it hasn't at all and indeed never been so high. So maybe the fatigue hasn't kicked in yet, so it's feasible if the main show ends this year and a next one takes over straight after.

People (myself included even though last season was mostly not very good) would like to see this story through, but taking on a new one without any of these characters? Just don't think it's as much of a slam dunk as you do, dom.

HBO is eager to have something to offer all the subscribers they anticipate leaving the service after the show ends. I would bet money it'll be ready by 2020 so HBO can capitalize on the original series ending to tell folks "Tune in next year for new adventures in Westeros!"

Don't you like Better Call Saul?mfunk9786 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 10:49 amIt's sort of like buying a stock when it's at its highest point - very strange move on Watts' part and any other high profile member(s) of the cast that join up - if Game of Thrones fatigue hasn't already begun to sink in for people, surely after the finale they'll feel as though they've had enough for a while. I predict this new series lasts a couple of years, tops, since it'll surely cost HBO a fortune

I sure do, but since when is Better Call Saul loaded with A-list actors, international on-location sets, and expensive special effects?

When was Breaking Bad? The originals were on different scales as well.

Re: Game of Thrones
Right, but Game of Thrones draws massive ratings with a cast that was mostly unknown or bordering on it, and it wasn't operating with the same blank check philosophy toward spectacle in the first season as it is now. HBO just needs to hope a spin-off will make a big enough splash to justify the fact that it will cost them [probably significantly] more than the original series did to get on the air. Much of this is my speculation, I'll admit, but actors like Watts are going to be making more than their counterparts did when the original series began, and fans have come to expect a certain level of production quality that isn't free. I don't see the comparison between those two examples from the perspective of the risk level for the network, is all.

Re: Game of Thrones
I never quite understood how running times can be that important for a TV show with so many different storylines (and a very variable pacing effectiveness) and a relatively small number of episodes per season. I'm not voicing a complaint here but I'm just curious because these running times became some kind of almost marketing angle whose appeal I really don't understand.
The total runtime for these 6 episodes is 432 minutes, which would equal 8 x 54 minutes, runtimes totally in line with many cable shows. Or, if one really wants a longer series finale, 7 x 50 minutes + 1 x 82 minutes. Nothing spectacular, really.

Re: Game of Thrones
Typical slow-starting season premiere tonight-- no one with a name even died! But I like where things are going, and it's nice to finally have everyone together in two locations. Disappointed the fan theory about the Iron Bank didn't pan out, though. From the preview of next week's episode it looks like the Night King's army will be arriving a lot sooner than I expected, so that's good-- it feels like something that should happen midway through so they can wrap things up in the aftermath instead of ending there. But I wonder if they'll continue this trend of not showing the White Walkers et al again at all until they arrive in Winterfell?
EDIT: I also dug the new opening and closing credits music, and the completely redone opening sequence

I liked the callback to the first scene of the series with the gruesome imagery in Last Hearth. Nice revamped opening credits, too!

Also, props to HBOGo for giving me server not found errors for five straight minutes and then signing me out six times, once halfway through the fucking episode. You'd think they'd allot the maximum amount of bandwidth for what is probably the most anticipated streaming event ever-- but then again, maybe they did and it still wasn't enough!

Just got a work pool for who lives/dies in the final season, and I only picked 8-of-27 to live, I think it's going to be brutal this season (much harder to predict, who becomes a zombie out of those 19 that "die").

Well, we’ll see how much guts this show has in the next episode after giving just about every character in Winterfell but Dany and Jon scenes that could double as farewells. Also

Re: Game of Thrones
I initially stopped watching during the second season and only periodically watched the last three over my girlfriend’s shoulder. For all it’s reputation for killing characters I’m really stunned by how many people are still alive at this point. All the Stark kids, all the Lannisters, even all the sidekicks and love interests (I’m even more surprised to remember Littlefinger only died in the last season finale.) I’m expecting something like the end of Harry Potter, where so many minor deaths are piled on at once that most don’t get any real staying power.
