Why not both? Koker Trilogy early in the year and big set in November.

Criterion has just done the same thing with Bergman. Plus, Kiarostami's son has said that they are working on a complete films box set.

Do you really see no commercial difference between these two?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
doubtful they'd do both like that.
But if they do put out just the Koker trilogy, in spite of reports from his son that they're putting out a complete works set, that opens the window for the Bergman blu-only box to be a template for an Akira Kurosawa box in November 2019.
It would be ten years after the DVD only AK100 box, and they could possibly approach an AK110 release the same way as the Bergman box, only putting out a bluray and including extras this time, with a film-festival ordering.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
On the website of "MOSTRA INTERNAZIONALE D’ARTE CINEMATOGRAFICA DI VENEZIA" appeared the list of recently restored movies, two of them are in collaboration with Criterion, here they are:
MORTE A VENEZIA (Death in Venice)
di LUCHINO VISCONTI (Italia, Francia, USA, 1971, 130’ , Colore)
restauro: Cineteca di Bologna e Istituto Luce - Cinecittà in collaborazione con Warner Bros. e *The Criterion Collection*
I'm very excited about this news!!!Noodles1984 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 10:32 amYes, it's very OOP, the biggest hope is to have, as i said before, Visconti German Trilogy Box...for a lot of reasons..The Damned is from MGM/Warner, it's OOP and even in Europe the Dvd is in bad quality often censored and rare, it was restored years ago by Cineteca but the restoration was never published(i don't know if 2k or 4k),then we have the OOP Death in Venice and Ludwig, published in a great blu release by Arrow...there is also the first movie of the director, Ossessione, now restored in 4k, the last dvd is great but a blu is necessary.

They retweeted another post specifically about Les Girls, which I didn't realize was on Filmstruck. Looks like this was never about Orry-Kelly after all
Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
A whole bunch of George Cukor films were just added to FilmStruck.

I assume this means they at least have the rights to Police Story 2 then? Would any other quality films (Chan or otherwise) come from the same licensor / deal? The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 3:49 pmForgot to include it with the original post. If you follow their posts, you'll see that they were trying to figure out the rights for a few weeks.yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 3:24 pmDo you have a link? The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 3:14 pmI think everyone is too distracted with theoretical box sets to care, but according to someone on the Blu-ray.com forums (hell on Earth, I know), someone curious about the rights to Jackie Chan's Police Story did a bit of sleuthing and claims that Janus Films owns the rights to it following the 4K restoration that played at MoMA.
I see that Criterion released Super Cop "Police Story 3" on Laserdisc - so that might explain things (would this still be tied up with Miramax?). I wonder how many of the films in the series that they plan to release? Just the four original films? Include the Michelle Yeoh spin-off? The two reboot films? Its an interesting development.

Sure, but I don't know how much of a one. But, we'll see what happens next year.domino harvey wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 5:47 pmDo you really see no commercial difference between these two?
Yes, part 3 is still with Miramax and part 4 is with Warner Brothers. Fortune Star ( click here if you want to see what other films they own, but, again, some of these are already owned by other companies in the US) only did new 4K restorations for the following:Minkin wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 9:24 pmI see that Criterion released Super Cop "Police Story 3" on Laserdisc - so that might explain things (would this still be tied up with Miramax?). Running Out of Time 2
The Story of Riki
The Adventurers
Iron Monkey (this is probably still with Miramax)

Black Mast 2
The Cannonball RUn
Battle Creek BRAWL
Armour of God (Miramax)
City Hunter
Project A (Miramax)
Project A 2 (Miramax)

Disappointed that 'The Killer' hasn't gotten a 2K or 4K restoration but happy that 'A Better Tomorrow' has gotten one. Will it be released in NA soon?dwk wrote: ↑Sat Jul 14, 2018 9:46 amSure, but I don't know how much of a one. Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Agreed. There's always been something of a special relationship between Janus Films as a company and Bergman, going back to (IIRC) distributing THE SEVENTH SEAL. So a Bergman box makes sense in the context of the company's history in a way that other filmmakers don't, except maybe Kurosawa, who not coincidentally got the AK100 set.MongooseCmr wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 3:30 pmI wouldn’t bank too hard on special anniversaries for box sets going forward. Harold Lloyd’s 125th birthday was last April, and since they’re clearly not rushing to give his films individual releases anymore I would guess the inevitable box set isn’t being timed for this year either.

I'd add Truffaut to the list of important to the company filmmakers. Hell, Criterion's softball team is/was named after him (True Foes)

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
If these “[auteur]’s cinema” filmography “books” become a thing, I could see them issuing an annual one for the canonical art house filmmakers hat make up criterions cornerstone editions like Kurosawa, ozu, Truffaut and Welles. Such a set of five or six of these “books” would be quite striking, and a good way to push out some of the languishing back catalog films.dwk wrote:I'd add Truffaut to the list of important to the company filmmakers. The coming soon image on the “shop the collection” link is pulling from a pool of only ~20 titles, so by refreshing it a few dozen times it should cycle through all the titles.
