So apparently, Shout Factory has confirmed they'll be releasing Pumpkinhead and its sequel on Blu-Ray for their Scream Factory lineup. Yes, they got the stupid sequel. They announced it in this podcast.

Bad news about Dog Soldiers
**Update on DOG SOLDIERS**

Sorry guys but there's been a change of plans for our upcoming Collector's Edition release of DOG SOLDIERS that we need to make you aware of...

Due to unforeseen issues on clear ownership of the rights, we are forced to move the title off of its planned August 26th release. Rest assured, we are doing everything we can to work out a solution to bring this back into our scary fold but, as of now, the street date is undetermined and there is a strong possibility of it moving to early 2015.

As always, we will keep you guys posted on any developments. Our apologies again.

Oof. Check out the shot of Adjani lying in bed near the top of the comparison. The compression artifacts on the Shout! release look so bad I'm having trouble believing that's an accurate representation of the disc they're putting out. It looks like an upscaled MPEG1 encode.

I know they've put out some discs hampered by poor quality masters and compression problems in the past, but if they had access to the same materials as the BFI I cannot imagine they could stuff it up as badly as those DVDBeaver caps seem to show.

And I thought the Arrow was stacked. I think Shout! Factory just lived up to it's exclamation mark

While waiting for the BFI disc (it's in the mail) I watched the German version on SHOUT! and I'm quite happy with it.
I didn't t compare it to the German BD because there's no English subs so there's no point for me.

However, as stated at DVDBeaver the English version is unwatchable from the first minute...it really is the worst looking thing I've seen on BD so far...shame.

Apparently Shout even screwed up the image quality on Ravenous. How the hell do you screw up the image quality on a film from 1999?

Shout commented on Facebook:
We saw a lot of talk about it this weekend unfortunately and we haven't been ignoring it. (Quite frankly, this is our first day back in the office and its been quite busy - Sleepaway Camp and House in the Alley both releasing today, amongst other projects in the works.) We asked FOX about it, who supplied us with the HD transfer, and their response was as follows:

This was transferred directly from IP and 2 track stereo comp sources. There is no indication that noise reduction was employed, however some sort of DRS/VIP clean-up was used.

Very easy : these are the times where the movies are considered too young to justify a new scan / restoration, but actually are too old to be up to current standards.

So, to answer your question : by not doing anything new and keep on relying on obsolete HD masters.

Titus is another example.

THE VINCENT PRICE COLLECTION II Blu-ray set is now no longer a rumor and will officially arrive in October! Sales were great on the first volume (thank you!) and we are thrilled to be able to bring more of the legendary star’s films to light in HD. Titles in the set include The Last Man on Earth, The Comedy of Terrors, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, Tomb of Ligeia, The Raven, Return of the Fly and…the William Castle favorite The House on Haunted Hill.

Exact street date, pre-order link and artwork will be show up sometime next month. Extras will be announced sometime later this Summer.

Rather excellent to see House on Haunted Hill get upgraded! That said, I'm more excited by this announcement in terms of the possibility of Arrow releasing these next (they've already announced Comedy of Terrors, and made hints towards the rest of the Corman/Poe series).

Well, it remains to be seen how their master looks for that title. The film is public domain, so what are they using for their source? Warners holds the original elements--and they don't license to Shout Factory. So I'm curious to see what Shout comes up with. (LAST MAN ON EARTH is also public domain, but they're licensing that one from MGM/Fox.)

The source for Legend's House on Haunted Hill (open matte transfer) looked very good.

Hmm - since she did this, it would have been nice if she (had been asked to...?) contribute to Criterion's upcoming THE INNOCENTS release.
