You're crazy... Maria Braun is easily the best of the three!

Maybe, maybe not, but it's certainly not the least of the three. And Querelle is no substitute for any of them.

I know everybody here is trilogy crazy, but I think this is the first time I've heard anybody suggest randomly swapping titles in and out of established trilogies. This could open all sorts of exciting new marketing opportunities:
A NEW Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman: Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light and . . . A Lesson in Love!
The NEW Apu Trilogy: Pather Panchali, The Adversary and The World of Apu!
Roberto Rossellini's NEW War Trilogy: Rome Open City, Paisan and . . . Joan of Arc at the Stake!?

The NEW Apu Trilogy: Pather Panchali, The Adversary and The World of Apu!

Well, The Adversary is better than Aparajito (no disrespect intended to Aparajito, I just really like the Calcutta trilogy)

Back to speculation. What are the chances that Criterion will release Waiting For Godot with Zero Mostel & Burgess Meredith? There's so much good drama from The Golden Age Of Television & the box set just doesn't even scratch the surface. A restored version of Godot (preceded by a restored version of Samuel Beckett's Film with Buster Keaton) recently played the Pacific Film Archive (& I couldn't make it) & it was shown in NY recently, but can't find any thing hinting on an upcoming release.

Does anybody know who holds the rights to Bertolucci's Partner, now that NoShame has gone under? I was wondering if Criterion might include it with their probable release of The Conformist.

You'll be pleased to know then that Gaumont are putting out a BD of the film in the first half of 2012! (Hopefully it includes both soundtracks and subs...)nolanoe wrote:include Querelle as the third BD

Ooo, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for that one (fingers crossed on the soundtracks and subs). Thanks for the heads up Peacock.

Re: Criterion and IFC
Forgive me if this is the wrong thread but is The War Room still in consideration? I seem to remember there was talk about it before.

The War Room was confirmed by the director. It is also from Focus Features and not IFC.

I'll speculate that City Lights gets released on February 14th. Been a while since a Chaplin came out, and would there be a more obvious choice for a romantic film of his to release on Valentine's Day...?

Excellent. The Return Of The War Room was on Sundance recently, and I'm very interested in seeing the whole film.ianungstad wrote:The War Room was confirmed by the director. It is also from Focus Features and not IFC.

The Return Of The War Room will reportedly be included in Criterion's reissue of The War Room too.

Double excellent. I'd suspect they would want to release it around a year from now to time the next election.

Did any NYers who went to the NYFF to see "The Bride Wore Black" notice if it was preceded with the oh-so-telling Janus logo?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The Film Desk has apparently been rolling out theatrical rereleases of most of the MGM DVD Truffauts for a while now (as well as some other titles of note). Not sure who The Film Desk's DVD tie-in company is (I think it may be Zeitgeist), or whether or not the MGM home video rights have expired. I do recall someone definitively stating that the Truffauts were not a part of the Criterion/MGM deal(s).

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
MGM continues to hold all the home video rights for their block of Truffaut titles. They haven't lapsed or been licensed. The Film Desk is indeed doing a theatrical reissue of The Bride Wore Black, and they've already done Mississippi Mermaid, The Wild Child, and Small Change. They've licensed theatrical rights only from the Truffaut estate.

A poster on Facebook pointed out that Image Entertainment is listing Feb.28 release dates for blu ray editions of Hoop Dreams and A Night to Remember. Hmm.
