Madman are releasing 5 of Scorsese's Shorts in July. I'm guessing it'll be a duplicate of the French Wildside release and feature Italianamerican, American Boy, What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This, It's Not Just You Murray, and The Big Shave.

Umbrella is doing all of the Jean-Jacques Beineix films that Cinema Libre released in R1 a couple years back. Can anyone say for sure whether the US versions are native NTSC? If not the Australian discs will be the ones to buy.

Ordered the Dead Man Blu-Ray from JB's online store for AUS$19.99 + AUS$8.29 international shipping which came to just over £18 after conversion (you can tick a box to have it labelled as a gift). And to think that Madman are selling it for AUS$40 on their website! Will post some feedback once I receive the disc (could take up to 2 weeks).

The Dead Man Blu arrived today and it looked good to me. I don't own the French disc to compare but going by the screenshots at the Beev the Madman Blu does seem sharper to me. Like the French Blu, it's single-layered and the grain doesn't come through as strongly as I'd have liked but I did not see any DNR. I'd recommend the Madman, certainly to those who've got a Region B or region-free player. And who knows how long it'll take for Miramax to release a Blu in the US, unless they've licenced to Criterion.

Madman have a Blu of The Leopard lined up for 31 August - unclear yet if it's based on the most recent resto or using the same master as Criterion and the BFI.

Someone in the thread for the Criterion release asked Madman about it- they said it wasn't from the new restoration, unfortunately.

It looks like Tim Burtall's films are being re-released on Umbrella. These could be identical - except for the covers - to the discs in the Roadshow HEXAGON box set that was out for a matter of months (before going OOP) many years ago.

So far released are: ALVIN PURPLE & ELIZA FRASER with STORK to follow on September 1. If more are to follow then expect: PETERSEN, LAST OF THE KNUCKLEMEN, END PLAY & HIGH ROLLIN'.

Actually, Directors Suite has been able to locate a master of the restoration of THE LEOPARD, so our BR release will be using that one.

So will it be the newer restoration that was on the recent Italian bluray? If so, I'm in for it!

Can anyone in the states speak to experience with jbhifionline? I ordered the 10 disc Herzog set from them on June 25, I was charged on July 6. On the website my order still says "AWAITING SHIPMENT". Would it have been shipped when I was charged? And how long should it take after shipping? I live in the US on the east coast.

I've only made one order with JB so far but had a good experience with them: it took them about 2 weeks from the release date of the Dead Man Blu to ship my disc to Scotland. I can't recall if they have faster international shipping for higher charges or not, but I'd check that first and email them as I agree that no dispatch after a month of placing the order isn't acceptable (unless it was out of stock when you ordered). Finger crossed for good news!

More (late/post-) Australian New Wave rarities coming from Umbrella: Donald Crombie's Kitty and the Bagman (1983) and Arch Nicholson's Dark Age (1987), both on October 5.

Umbrella is just about my favorite DVD label these days.

The Eraserhead BD has been yanked from Umbrella's website...delayed, maybe?

Edit: Yes

I too miss David's contributions. Does he have a current online hangout? (If so, and if David wouldn't mind, I'd love to know what it is).

He sometimes contributes at Dave Kehr's blog, but not as much as he used to.
