Can't say I like the cover at all, even with the explanation. Sometimes wrong is wrong, even with a good reason!
and it is in color (black & white film). and is that his wife? It doesn't look like Beulah Bondi.

Looks like he enjoyed the Alien head. That might explain a lot.

Bellissima was in colour too, but that cover is kick-ass!

Has there ever been a cover you did like? You sure are one tough customer.
I usually like MoC. Love their M, their Sunrise, many more. This one just misses the film entirely and, intentional or not, that's the primary goal.

I like it. Now the Tashlin's a little dodgy and a good excuse to not use the original poster art, but you could cover it in a swimminghorses masterwork and it wouldn't matter, because my God, Tashlin in Blu!

As pure design, the Make Way for Tomorrow art is very nice, but I guess I'm not a fan of irony.

I like the MWFT cover. There's a certain foreboding surrealism in the degree to which the characters are arched back, as though they are about to fall backward. The title itself is ironic anyway.

Though perhaps it might be worth adding a sticker: WARNING--IRONIC COVER ART

Re Make Way...: I liked the (few) features on the Criterion DVD and the artwork is one of the most beautiful on any release so I'll hold on to the DVD and get the MoC as well. Intrigued to see what you guys achieved with the existing print, Nick. Understand and respect that they went for an ironic take with the UK poster but I find that image just not all that appealing. Never thought I'd say this but Criterion have for the most part bettered you this year in the artwork department but especially with Make Way For Tomorrow.

Tashlin on Blu is a very cool development - looking forward to seeing this. Two great surprises!

edit: forgot to ask: any chance you could follow BFI's example with their Ozu Blu's and use transparent keepcases?

Only because it is so absurd!

I have no issue with the art in and of itself. I don't think it's particularly great, but it's fine. But it just does not match the film for me.

I do apologizing for criticizing MoC. I know we're only supposed to nit pick and endlessly berate Criterion products but sometimes it spills over!

The cover for "make way ..." is horrible. It looks even worse compared to the Criterion. Normally you nail it with cover art. Here you put your money on the wrong horse in my opinion.

..and what was the other horse? A bad pastiche of the excellent Criterion cover?

This was exactly our thinking. It was a difficult one, we didn't want to pick a production still and slap some text over it.

I'd rather a still and text than an inappropriate (unsuccessful) attempt at something original.

But it's not original at all.

Who cares. It's irrelevant whether it's original, copied, a still, similar to Criterion's or whatever. Every company does bad cover art at times. This just happens to be one of MoC's unsuccessful covers. I'm sure the release will be, as their films always are, flawlessly done.

It's totally irrelevant.
The way I see things nothing will compare with the Criterion art, so why not go as left field as the original posters allow. It's kind of creepy which is cool to me.

Is that directed at me? :( Because that's pretty discouraging. What did I do wrong? I don't like the art. I'm not the only one. I was more polite than many people are about Criterion. I love MoC and said they're excellent in this very thread. I know they staff post here but I hope they'd want our honest opinions about their work and not just untrue praise.

Love both the covers. MoC comes through as usual. While I lovelovelove the Criterion MWfT cover art, MoC's is no slouch, either. Because I just picked up the CC in the 50% off sale, I won't pick up the latter. Still a gorgeous cover, though.
