So things aren't looking good for English subs on the "Condamné à mort s'est échappé" Blu-Ray, huh?

I was just about to post the same link, but I would still wait until the disc is released for verification.

According to posters on the Blu-ray forum, an email from Gaumont states that this is a dvd release only.

Re: Gaumont French Releases 2010
Tonight I picked up a Guamont release of Les Tontons Flingueuers (aka Crooks in Clover aka Monsieur Gangster).
I mention it because it has English subs, and the film doesn't appear to have an R1 release.
Well, after a little quick research, my dvd seems to be based on a new Blu Ray edition released February 14, 2010 and listed as All Region.

Les tontons flingueurs is one of three Georges Lautner films that were recently released on Blu-ray in France by Gaumont (the other two films are Ne nous fâchons pas and Les Barbouzes).

Well, they may have changed policy since : http://video.fnac.com/a2797990/Un-conda ... n=-1&Ra=-3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;doc mccoy wrote:According to posters on the Blu-ray forum, an email from Gaumont states that this is a dvd release only.
As for Les tontons flingueurs, the DVD has been released first, as Les barbouzes and Ne nous fâchons pas, with a new HD master.
Then, they have been released on BR, buyable one by one or in a boxset (as the DVDs).
I think they all have english subs, but I'm not sure of that.

Re: Gaumont French Releases 2010
Kodak's latest ish of their mag, 'In Camera', has an i/v with Gaumont Technical Director Andre Labbouz...
He reveals the programme of re-releases and restorations over 3 years, starting January 2009, covers 150 classic films from their catalogue, dating from the 1950's to the 1980's, to be outputted as JPEG 2000 digital copies for theatrical projection, with parallel DVD & BluRay releases... 100 films are processed in HD and 50 in 2K...
Ronald Boullet, digital restoration supervisor at the Eclair laboratory tells of the work on FRENCH CANCAN, piecing together a jigsaw to utilise the best components (this is released next week on BR/DVD)...

FRENCH CANCAN by Jean Renoir is a good example. The film was released at the time in two versions, a long French version and a shorter version released the following year for the American market. The problem is that this shorter version was not made from intermediate components, but by cutting the negative.
To reconstruct the French copy, we had to re-insert the internegatives in the middle of the original negatives whilst also producing a three-colour version (the resultant film becoming a colour version from three black-and-white versions). The long version has now been restored, and the join between the two sources is completely seamless.

Re: Gaumont French Releases 2010
Someone has posted a link to screen captures of the Blu-ray "French CanCan" at Blu-ray dot com. Under each screen capture, there's this information: 1280x720. Does this mean that the image on this Blu-ray release is not full high definition (1080p) ? If that is the case, what a disappointment. On my computer monitor, those screen caps do not look very sharp.

blu-ray.com resize all their screen caps to 720p in order to save the bandwidth costs.

Re: Gaumont French Releases 2010
Thanks! My order has been shipped and I was worried that the image would not be in full high definition.

Looks to have a bit of a blue/grey cast. But otherwise lovely.

Just FYI, it's been confirmed elsewhere that while Tontons has English subs, the other two do not.tenia wrote:As for Les tontons flingueurs, the DVD has been released first, as Les barbouzes and Ne nous fâchons pas, with a new HD master.

Re: Gaumont French Releases 2010
So, Pro-B, what's the bottom line regarding the definition of "French Cancan"? Your statement only refers to blu-ray.com, not the definition of the Gaumont release, correct? I can't imagine why Gaumont would do only a 720p transfer. Maybe ecranlarge reduced the resolution of their screen caps?pro-bassoonist wrote:You have been misinformed.broadwayrock wrote:blu-ray.com resize all their screen caps to 720p in order to save the bandwidth costs.

The bottom line is:
1080p/MPEG-4 AVC/Region-Free.
As to EcranLarge, all I can tell you is that since A.C. left, they have not been overly impressive. Their captures - as are everyone else's, even those that are actually uncompressed 1920 x1080p - are for illustrative purposes only, not to judge and/or produce a definitive opinion on the quality of the actual transfer.
*On a slightly different note, it appears that in another thread I have been demoted to a studio rep because I greeted David.

No problem, David.david hare wrote:ON another subject is it possible someone at BluRay.com can scratch up a copy of the Park Circus Pandora and confirm once and for all they've used the same source as Kino? The Park Circus disc contents are 39.701 gigs, as against the Kino 39.407. Sounds like the same deal.
I received the UK disc on Wednesday. Let me take a look at the U.S. disc on Monday night (I don't handle KINO) and I will do it.
