Re: Criterion Facebook Page
Just to go back to The Silent World for a minute.
There was a cheap "public domain" copy available in China.
Maybe from Bo Ying or some such.
So I'd expect that for those who are desperate, a cheap copy would be floating around the auction sites. The colors are kind of washed out and the print isn't great, but it's definitely viewable.
And it really is an extraordinary film.
As mentioned, the marine scientists want to document what sea animals exist in a lagoon, so they simply dynamite the water and collect and count all of the dead ex-life that they find. One blow-fish is incredibly sad. That and going all Whacking Day on the sharks for no reason (I think the voice over explains that sharks are bad creatures and deserve to die, or something similar), really show the prevailing lack of sophistication and respect for the marine life common at the time. Underlying it all seems to be a naive conception that ocean resources are plentiful and unlimited, with strong hints at the ways in which man's technological development is about to outstrip the ability of the waters to replenish their stocks of marine life.
There is some very fine camera work. And the film is a fascinating look at man and nature at a rather interesting/critical juncture in history. And of course, the perverse pleasure of watching Jacques Cousteau and crew rampage through the seas.

Naturally the best extra for The Silent World would be a commentary - in character - by the cast of Life Aquatic

So did "Vivre Sa Vie" give a sound thrashing to "My Life to Live"? (I'm not on Facebook.)

I don't think that many people responded to this, but they all preferred Vivre sa vie.

It won't get released in Quebec unless it's called "La fin de semaine"Cinephrenic wrote:Are they gonna ask for his Weekend, Week End, Week-end or Le weekend.

Why don't you ask who is this fella that makes the most interesting questions and posts the most useful comments :-"GringoTex wrote:Which one of you is the Ben Cheshire feller who has to comment on every single post?

What an intriguing response. I know everyone here will say not to read anything into this, but 99% of the time Criterion just gives a variation of "no" on Facebook when a title is out of the question.Criterion wrote:Barry Lyndon would be great, but no news at the moment

Re: Criterion Facebook Page
Why doesn't someone ask who's the asshole with the profile photo of him holding four kittens that responds to each post of someone asking for a film that already has an excellent special edition?
Is Los Olvidados really in the works? That would be nothing but excellent news!

Seems like a nicer way to say "no", IMO.jaredsap wrote:What an intriguing response. Is CaptVeg Brandon from HTF?
Also, IMO that's a firm no for Barry Lyndon; it just means they like the movie. Seen it heaps before.

PS: it isn't me with the kittens, but it is annoying seeing someone wanting No Country for Old Men (a film I adore) to be added to the collection. Not because it isn't worthy by any means, but there is so much ahead of it in line.

And because there's already a three-fucking-disc edition, featuring just about every interview ever conducted about the film.
