Criterion press release for April contains these additional 3 titles, all $14.95:
THE RED BALLOON
Newly restored and available for the first time on DVD, Albert Lamorisse’s exquisite The Red Balloon remains one of the most beloved children’s films of all time. In this deceptively simple, nearly wordless tale, a young boy discovers a stray balloon, which seems to have a mind of its own, on the streets of Paris. The two become inseparable, yet the world’s harsh realities finally interfere. With its glorious palette and allegorical purity, the Academy Award–winning The Red Balloon has enchanted movie lovers, young and old, for generations.

WHITE MANE
In the south of France, in a near-desert region called La Camargue, lives White Mane, a magnificent stallion and the leader of a herd of wild horses too proud to let themselves be broken in by humans. Only Folco, a young fisherman, manages to tame him. A strong friendship grows between the boy and the horse, as the two go looking for the freedom that the world of men won’t allow them. Long unavailable in the U.S., this extraordinarily shot wonder from Albert Lamorisse, the director of The Red Balloon, is a work of technical sophistication and immense natural beauty.

PADDLE TO THE SEA
Based on Holling C. Holling’s beloved Caldecott-awarded children’s book, William Mason’s stunning film follows the adventures of a tiny, wood-carved canoe as it forges its own path from Lake Superior through the Great Lakes and down to the Atlantic Ocean. Buoyed by beautiful photography and a sense of true wonder about the sun, Earth, and water, the Academy Award–nominated Paddle to the Sea is an unforgettable tribute to the forces of the natural world, as well as a thrilling journey across the waves and rapids of North America.

The last time (as far as I remember) we got something in the press release that didn't immediately go to the website, it was a re-pressing of a catalogue title (Traffic), and a Collector's Set (Olivier). Anybody think its possible that these three shorts will NOT have spine numbers, and instead be something else entirely?

The CAT numbers for these follow exactly the CAT numbers for the two releases that have been officially announced...although anything's possible.arsonfilms wrote:The last time (as far as I remember) we got something in the press release that didn't immediately go to the website, it was a re-pressing of a catalogue title (Traffic), and a Collector's Set (Olivier). I don't know about the younger critics at Cahiers, but Bazin loved it. The film inspired one of his most ambitious ontological diatribes, The Virtues and Limitations of Montage. I wonder what he would have thought about Hou's tribute - or Hou in general for that matter. Anyway, a snippet:
Ballon Rouge is a tale told in film, a pure creation of the mind, but the important thing about it is that this story owes everything to the cinema precisely because, essentially, it owes it nothing.

Look back one film further and across the pond for the springboard, not just for these "kids films" but for a vast chunk of the inspiration of the whole vague Vague:
"Our New Wave would never have come into being if it hadn't been for the young Morris Engel...with his fine Little Fugitive." - François Truffaut

What a fantastic movie that is. A very lovely capture of 1950s Coney Island coming to life through a boy's eyes. He's on the run thinking he has killed his brother and Coney Island becomes his new world. Beautiful stuff.HerrSchreck wrote:"Our New Wave would never have come into being if it hadn't been for the young Morris Engel...with his fine Little Fugitive." - François Truffaut

videoeta.com lists "Paddle to the Sea," "The Red Balloon," and "The White Mane" all as getting separate releases by the Criterion Collection on April 29 (and with a list price of only 14.95 USD). There's nothing on there about a packaged set of those three. I don't know how reliable videoeta.com is, or even if my news is old news, but as of this posting (3:00 PM Pacific time), there's nothing on Criterion's website about any of those three.
Edit: Sorry, looking up a few posts now, I see that my "news" really is old news. My apologies.
