Yeah, but it was the worst comic book adaptation I've ever seen (though I haven't seen the 70's Captain America). I mean, I thought the new Punisher was bad, but if I meet anyone who actually enjoyed Catwoman, I would seriously be worried for about their mental health. What the #&@% were they thinking? And they want to put that director on Akira? Yikes!

Yeah, I was referencing these reports as negotiations though because some around the same time said he was still mulling it over. Either way, I hope the Gellar comment is a joke.

i reckon you either mean that you oppose the administrator:

but i reckon that you did not to the latter, so i question your perception of gellar as wonder woman. if we are to remain faithful to the comic book, then i must say i don't see it, drew. can you clarify.

1.

wonder woman

2.

in an interview with mike allred, he says:
newsarama wrote:Currently in pre-production is the movie adaptation of Mike Allred’s Madman, to be directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is currently working on an adaptation of Frank Miller’s Sin City. But Robert Rodriguez’s involvement with the Madman movie pre-dates his interest in Sin City, but don’t think that means it won’t get made.

“This is always delicate since there are potentially so many naked toes that can be stepped on. More often than not it's best to keep quiet on these things in order to let them proceed correctly,” Allred explained. “Having said that, Robert has made a multi-picture deal with Miramax/ Dimension and Madman is a part of that. In fact, Robert convinced them that the best way to make a comic book movie is to have the creators co-direct the films. Frank [Miller] is way ahead of me on every level and it should surprise no one that my little comic book project would take a back seat to his. In addition, Frank wrote his screenplay years and years ago but turned back to comics when the situation didn't sit right and turned his back on Hollywood. I actually hooked Robert up with Frank and Bob Schreck who helped convince Frank that Robert is a great guy and could be trusted to make a Sin City film the way Frank would want with him co-directing. I'd do anything for Robert and his wife Elizabeth. They've done more for us than I could ever say.”

“So, at this time George Huang, a long time friend of Robert's and writer-director of the indy hit Swimming With Sharks is writing the Madman treatment based on the outline Robert and I put together. So, when that's approved we kick into the screenplay and if approved shoot the movie. We already have our Frank "Madman" Einstein; He’s star of 2003’s biggest money maker. I'm pretty sure it was the biggest box office flick (that should get a few tongues wagging). So, it either happens or it doesn't. It seems to me this is just gonna be one of those projects that just take a long time to hit the big screen. Keep in mind I was first approached about making a low-budget Madman movie right out of the gate in 1992. It should be obvious why I stopped holding my breath. But when I'm called on--just try to hold me back!”

I can't speak for Drew, but I took his comment to mean that he felt that SMG wouldn't do justice to that role, which is what we would-be intellectuals like to call an "understatement"

If she gets that role, the result will make Catwoman look like La Dolce Vita.

Charisma, however...I can see that.

This whole thread is pretty surreal to me, but surely there are plenty of other places on the net to wax obsessive over Buffy the Vampire Slayer or X-Men? Can this discussion come back up for air now?

Back on the topic, has anybody else seen the German short film based on Will Eisner's The Super? Not a great film by any stretch, but it predated American cinema's interest in alternative comics by many years.

I don't think this has been mentioned anywhere in the thread, but does anybody know anything about Ghost Rider?I've been reading little tidbits about that on and off for years. That was one of my faves when I was a comic reader.
And just to drop in my two cents -
I think The Incredible Hulk is one of the best comic films so far. I just love the way it looked, with the panes opening up and having pans within the frame.
Spiderman was grossly overrated. I will grant that the second one got a lot better. I just thought the Green Goblin looked lame. I think they could have had the old bald vulture guy from the comic and it woulda looked better.
Michael Keaton was a GOOD Batman, dammit!
And I sincerely hope Christian Bale makes a better one! I think he can pull it off. I think Equilibrium shows he can do action roles.

Portman carries out 'Vendetta'
Thesp goes to work for the Wachowskis

By CLAUDE BRODESSER, CATHY DUNKLEY
Hot off a Golden Globe nom for her work in "Closer," Natalie PortmanNatalie Portman is in final negotiations to toplinetopline the Wachowski brothers' "V Is for Vendetta," for Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver.

An adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name, action-heavy script was penned by the "Matrix" scribes. Their longtime first assistant director James McTeigue will make his helming debut on the pic. The Wachowskis will produce "Vendetta" with Warners-based Silver.

"Vendetta" takes place in an alternate future in which Germany wins WWII and Great Britain becomes a fascist state. A terrorist freedom fighter known only as "V" begins a violent guerrilla campaign to destroy those who've succumbed to totalitarianism, and recruits a young woman he's rescued -- or possibly kidnapped --from the secret police to join him.

McTeigue recently wrapped duties as first a.d.a.d. on "Star Wars -- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," where he worked closely with Portman. Actress also recently starred in the critically acclaimed "Garden State" for Fox SearchlightFox Searchlight and Miramax.

Before "Vendetta" can start shooting in Berlin, Portman will first need to wrapwrap up her work on"Free Zone," from Israeli helmer Amos Gitai ("11'09"01 -- September 11"). But insiders familiar with the studio's plans say the first week of March has already been carved out to start production, with a fall 2005 release planned.

"action-heavy script"?! Oh dear... Alan Moore just can't get a break with cinematic adaptations of his work.

Re: V for Vendetta

NO. NO. NO!

Re: Wonder Woman

Does anybody actually care about this flick getting made? WW is possibly the worst hero/comic book in the DC Universe, and a sentimentally campy TV show, and nothing else. I could care less who makes it/stars in it, or if it gets made at all.

Re: Rodriguez

If I trust one filmmaker in Hollywood to deliver, it`s Rodriguez. So, bring on Sin City, Madman, Shell Boy (or whatever it`s called) or anything else for that matter.

Re: Spider-man 2

I, unlike most people, didn`t like SM2 all ythat much. It had a promising start and all the scenes out of the costume were great, but the second half of the movie was like a really bad soap opera with gys in costumes. And all the action scenes (building on fire, Train secluded abandoned industrial facility) were stock action setpieces and not fun at all. For my money, the first part was way better.

They are going to make V for Vendetta, a movie with a terrorist hero in todays political climate? I think that's kinda brave.

If you read carefully, you actually learn that Wachowskis won`t direct, but only produce. The director will be the 1st Assistant Director of Matrix! Jesus, man, Abort Mission!

In the 2 and a half years since this thread was last posted on we have seen more comic book characters on film than I can remember. Anyone care to comment on the quality (or lack thereof) of the last quarter decade? Or how there is still no Madman or Wonder Woman movie yet?

Some have been very good. Batman Begins pretty much is the best superhero film I've ever seen. X3 and Spiderman 3 were letdowns. I knew deep down that X3 wouldn't couldn't live up to X2. Spiderman 3 could have lived up to the hype had they not added 3 villains to the piece and just had maybe 1 or 2. Superman Returns was just a bore. I know that they needed to reintroduce Superman to people and play off the third and fourth film, but they could have done it better than the way they did. It's bad when you and the rest of your friends are rooting for Lex to kick Superman's ass at the end of the film, than the other way around. I really have high hopes that Dark Knight keeps going with what Begins started.

Since January 2005 we've seen two Fantastic Four movies, Ghost Rider, Art School Confidential, Batman Begins, Elektra, 300, Sin City, Spider-Man 3, Superman Returns, X-Men 3, TMNT, V for Vendetta (and, probably some others)

As for whether the trend is subsiding or not, we'll apparently be getting a lot more. Here are some other movies to ‘look forward' to:

I'm extremely excited about Hellboy 2 next year, everything I've read so far has sounded very promising. Guillermo Del Toro wrote the script while directing Pan's Labyrinth, and he claims that that caused some stylistic and thematic crossover between the two films - evidently this film is going to be based more in folklore, as opposed to the pulpier tone of the first movie. The first Hellboy movie might be my favorite comic book-based movie, and not just because I'm a huge fan of the source material (or the fact that I love pretty much anything involving Nazi occultism).

IMDB doesn't update most of their pages anymore, so don't get your hopes up for all those.

Madman and Avengers are only in development. Marvel has announced The Avengers is not going to happen until a number of individual franchises (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc.) have been established on their own, so we're talking a loooong time. Also, the Weinsteins haven't even been able to secure Sin City 2 (now 2009 if they do) so don't hold your breath for Madman.

Nick Fury and The Flash can't get off the ground until 2010 at the earliest, due to commitment issues. The Iron Fist movie is dead at Lionsgate and Deathlok hasn't seen any developments for a long time. Spawn 2 can't find financing and Wonder Woman doesn't even have a script they can shoot. Lastly, Doom Patrol is probably going to sit on the shelf until Akiva Goldsman gets done with Teen Titans.

I agree it could have been better, but I found it far from boring. Returns was one of the better comicbook films of late, imo, but it just suffered from too many under-developed ideas. Of course, they did go into production without a script thanks to the McG debacle...
It's bad when you and the rest of your friends are rooting for Lex to kick Superman's ass at the end of the film, than the other way around.
No offense, but I enjoyed watching Superman get beat up and I don't agree with you whatsoever. Maybe we have different ideas of what consititutes a good Superman movie, but I do think it's safe to assume you're going to like the sequel more.

From Variety's Bags & Boards blog:
"Justice League" flick one step closer ...

WB's plans for a "Justice League" movie reached a major milestone last week when writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney turned in a first-draft screenplay that Variety's Pam McClintock says had "Warner Bros. suits actually smiling."

Husband-and-wife duo picked up the assignment earlier this year; deal was announced around the time of the New York Comic-Con.

The next big question for the studio will be whether to go ahead with the pic before Bryan Singer's planned sequel to "Superman Returns," which is due in 2009 but reportedly has no script or start date yet set. The casting question also hangs heavily in the air: Should Christian Bale, currently shooting Batman pic "The Dark Knight," and Singer's Man of Steel Brandon Routh reprise their roles in a "JL" flick? Would recasting Batman and Superman with different actors give fans and the press too much to pick on?

Only time will tell which way the studio goes, though they'd better start thinking up some answers for the thousands of fans who even now are sharpening their queries for next month's trip to San Diego.
This sounds like a terrible idea on so many levels, and I think Marvel is smart not to go ahead with an Avengers movie when most of the franchises they'd be bringing together aren't even off the ground yet. A Justice League movie would have the the fact that all the DC franchises are under the WB roof going for it, but I doubt Singer and Nolan are going to want Warner Bros mandating things in their own films to set up the JLA film. And I can't really see Christian Bale doing something like this.

Oh, good... I was starting to get a little panicked – the thought of a movie industry over-obsessed with comics and a comics industry over-obsessed with movies was making me nauseous and dizzy.

Still, a Popbot movie actually suggests the potential for innovative filmmaking as the books themselves have particularly atypical narratives (but I can't imagine how they'll stay true to the source material without getting an NC-17 rating).
