Re: Passages
Dilip Kumar, described as "the ultimate method actor" by Satyajit Ray, who had a run of classic films as a smouldering male romantic lead between the 1940s and the 1960s including the 1955 version of Devdas (that led to a couple of further films with the director Bimal Roy, Madhumati and Yahudi)
1960 was perhaps his biggest year in film with the fairytale comic fantasy film Kohinoor and the giant 1960 historical epic Mughal-e-Azam (with its songs by Lata Mangeshkar), but then there were the more contemporary romantic drama films such as the beautiful Gunga Jumna (which is kind of the Bollywood take on the 'brothers taking opposite paths by fate' narrative of Angels With Dirty Faces!), and the run of films that made him a star in the late 1940s: 1948's Shaheed, 1949's Andaz (which turned him into a star name, starring against Nargis who herself would go on to star in one of the most famous Indian films, 1957's Mother India. Nargis and Kumar would team-up together again in the 1960s for Jogan) and 1950's Babul.

Four-term governor of Louisiana Edwin Edwards. If you're not familiar with his electoral history, it's worth a look -- particularly the election of 1991.

Re: Passages
Has any state ever had more crazy, larger-than-life governors than Louisiana? I guess Illinois has been pretty bat-shit insane in recent years with none of the charm.soundchaser wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 4:34 pmFour-term governor of Louisiana Edwin Edwards. Re: Passages
NJ must come in 3rd. However, NJ corruption and craziness extends to the Senators (Menendez, Torricelli, and dating back to Harrison Williams and Abscam) and basically every level of governance. When Gov. McGreevey helped out himself as gay and corrupt -- hiring his unqualified Israeli lover as state homeland security director, who then threatened to extort the governor -- the stock phrase in most articles referred to NJ as "the most corrupt state in the nation, except for Louisiana" which was acknowledged as even worse. IL has had an impressive run of governors going to jail.
Amazing that Menendez is still in office (pro tip: you can get away with sex with child prostitutes if you do so overseas). The evolving legal standard seems to be Hey just because you were lavished with political donations, gifts and free trips, any help you give to such a generous person might just be normal constituent service, while friends routinely exchange gifts ...

Not even a Wikipedia page! Probably best known for producing countless BBC sessions for John Peel (the acts who came through these sessions are like a Who's Who in British post-punk and New Wave), he also produced the (English) Beat's amazing records, the first being my favorite.Habit Rouge wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 8:25 pmSuperb British record producer Bob Sargeant died today. EDIT: Dave Wakeling has posted a few photos and a remembrance on the official Facebook page for the Beat.

Just a Friend
Biz speaking an alien language (beatboxing) with Will Smith in a Men In Black film. Fun idea backed up with great casting.
I used to chat with Biz Markie about the NY Knicks on a small forum for well over a decade. Thoughtful poster and always a gentleman. Didn't know his real identity until the past few years. Seems to have had obesity issues which led to diabetes and diabetic complications. Just 57.

A little different ...
Emmett Till would have been 80 on July 25, 2021.
100K people filed past his casket in Chicago in 1955.
I mentioned Emmett Till to my parents and was surprised that they both drew blanks, even after I explained who he was. My mother would have been 14, the same age as Till, at the time of his murder; my father 17. I guess sadly it didn't register loudly for many white folks of the time. I just thought Till was one of the best-known victims of post-war racism, and an infamous incident in the civil rights movement.
