First TIFF lineup announcements, including the world premiere of Terence Davies' Benediction (which will be in competition at San Sebastian around the same time).

Something that jumps out is that Petite maman is listed as a Canadian premiere, obviously implying a prior U.S. screening. Telluride is the only U.S. festival happening before TIFF that seems like a plausible venue.

That makes sense considering Portrait of a Lady on Fire screened at Telluride for its U.S. premiere

Also exciting is the listing of Encounter (Michael Pearce’s follow-up to Beast, starring Riz Ahmed) as an International Premiere, implying it will also be playing Telluride

Very intrigued by the Merlant, and (bizarrely enough) by the Noé, whose lead is...Dario Argento?
And the female lead is Françoise Lebrun(!) aka the best part in The Mother and the Whore. Details for this film are coming out, and as a frequent detractor of Noe's, I have to admit I'm intrigued about his latest project (probably aided by my surprising affection for Abel Ferrara's recent output).. it seems Noe is recently sober after a near-death experience, and this latest film, Vortex, is operating on a very different and intimate wavelength compared to his other work

Also worth nothing that Zhang Yimou's One Second is finally having its festival premiere (though probably in the butchered version?)

Also hoping it will play Telluride (at this point I'll watch anything Riz Ahmed is in), but since the film is a UK-US co-production that probably just means it'll premiere in the UK before Toronto (maybe Edinburgh?)

It's only listed as a North American premiere rather than an international one, so it it's apparently getting an as-yet-unannounced screening somewhere else ahead of TIFF? Or it's scheduled to get a release in some international market before then, though I don't see any lined up. There's zero chance it'll be anything other than the final release version, which from what people have been able to piece together is probably the same except for the ending (and even that doesn't seem to have been changed in a particularly radical way).

I considered that, and maybe I’m being greedy, but it seems a little high-profile for an Edinburgh debut, particularly given Riz Ahmed’s post-Oscar profile and the fact that Pearce’s Beast premiered at Toronto back in 2017.

I'm sorry if this was mentioned/discussed before, but I wonder if Scott Rudin got to retain his producer's credit for this film? I know that he produced their Oscar-winning No County for Old Men, but I found the silence from Joel Coen and Frances McDormand in the aftermath of the accusations a bit disappointing. I will add that it hasn't made me any less intrigued by their take on Macbeth, however.

He was taken off of French Dispatch at the very least, so I doubt it

According to a post made on the AwardsWorthy forum from a programmer for a festival associated with Venice, Joel Coen's 'The Tragedy of Macbeth' was rejected from Venice and that Andrew Dominik's 'Blonde', alongside 'Macbeth', received poor feedback from the European programmers.

Listed as a New York Premiere, so very likely to be at Telluride as well

So, ahead of next week's reveal of the Telluride lineup, here's what semi-informed speculation indicates are the films that range from slim possibility to very likely to be on the final roster. I've highlighted those I'm particularly interested in and will be prioritizing, but if anyone can point to films they've seen through Cannes or other means (*coughZedzcough*), please let me know; with the extra day added to the festival this year, I'm hopeful to still be able to get into 4-5 screenings a day, and aiming for 20 total films (some of which will be repertory/tribute screenings not listed here). I should note that while some of these had seemingly been precluded by the premiere status listed for Toronto/NYFF, there have been several reports that those designations aren't entirely trustworthy this year (and that NYFF in particular may have just gone ahead with announcements knowing that Telluride spots were still possible for their films).

Very Likely:
A Chiara (Carpignano)
Becoming Costeau (Garbus)
C'mon C'mon (Mills)
The Card Counter (Schrader)
The Electric Life of Louis Wain (Sharpe)
The Hand of God (Sorrentino)
Julia (Cohen; West)
A Hero (Farhadi)
King Richard (Green)
Muhammad Ali (Burns)
Petit Maman (Sciamma)
The Power of the Dog (Campion)
Prayers for the Stolen (Huezo)
The Rescue (Vásárhelyi; Chin)
Spencer (Larrain)
Three Minutes - A Lengthening (Stigter)
Unclenching the Fists (Kovalenko)
Velvet Underground (Haynes)

Definitely Possible:
Belfast (Branagh)
Bergman Island (Hansen-Løve)
Cyrano (Wright)
Encounter (Pearce)
The First 54 Years: An Abbreviated Manual for Military Occupation (Mograbi)
Flee (Rasmussen)
Last Exit: Space (Herzog)
The Lost Daughter (Gylenhaal)
Red Rocket (Baker)
Vortex (Noe)

>10% Chance (All of which I'd see if possible):
Antlers (Cooper)
Don't Look Up (McKay)
Dune (Villeneuve)
The French Dispatch (Anderson)
Nightmare Alley (Del Toro)

Red Rocket is essential and Simon Rex is incredible in it; I can't wait (on multiple levels) to see the reaction to it out of US audiences. I only thought French Dispatch was "pretty good" in terms of Anderson, but it's fairly similar to Grand Budapest, which I know you adore, so you might get a lot more out of it than I. Same thing on an even greater level with Bergman Island, which I outright disliked, though again this could be just me. A bunch of the other stuff I saw (I still can't believe that NYFF is premiering Titane here...) seems to be elsewhere, but I'm hoping that Desplechin's Philip Roth adaptation Deception, which was a lot of fun, appears somewhere in the States.
