So I know Andrew Dominik has been trying to get his Monroe biopic off the ground for a while with different actresses attached/considered... but I had no idea he completed it with Ana de Armas(!) filling the shoes- what an unexpected, inspired choice

I'm just worried about his ability to adapt the source material. Oates, like Martin Amis, is very tricky to transpose to the screen, and this is a seriously dense and kaleidoscopic work that can go in a million different directions. I believe David Lynch was interested in this novel as well; he's long wanted to do a film about Monroe (or using a Monroe-like substitute).

Sadly I don't think the Campion or the Berg will be there, if only because of who is distributing them. Crossing my fingers for PTA for sure, though.
And I guess now's a good time to mention that I was just invited to the last few days of Cannes (again) - hopefully conditions will work out such that I'll be able to attend.

Was The Meyerowitz Stories bought by Netflix after Cannes or did they accept a Netflix-distributed film? Maybe they'll accept the Campion since it's directed by a Palme winner

Re: Festival Circuit 2021
But that was also before the rule change that's kept Netflix films out of the festival. Okja (which was acquired by Netflix before production even began) was in the main lineup that year as well. Protests from French exhibitors led Cannes to add the requirement that any film in competition needs to commit to a French theatrical release, which Netflix won't do due to the mandatory 36-month window. Cannes wanted to show The Other Side of the Wind out of competition the following year, but Netflix insisted that they also had to take Roma for the competition, and since neither side would budge on the theatrical release issue, that was the end of that. There is a proposal to shorten the window to as little as six months for streamers that spend certain percentages of their French revenue on French theatrical releases, but it's not clear if that would be enough to convince Netflix to abandon their boycott of French theaters.
The theatrical window issue doesn't apply to the Berg—it's a doc, so it has no chance of a competition slot anyway—and Amazon had Too Old to Die Young at the 2019 festival, so they're evidently more flexible than Netflix.Never Cursed wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 1:49 pmSadly I don't think the Campion or the Berg will be there, if only because of who is distributing them.

Thierry Frémaux on this year's festival. He doesn't say anything particularly interesting. The new Jane Campion film might play out of comp, jury will be announced around June 10th. Theaters will operate on their maximum capacity, vaccination passports not required (but negative tests obviously are)

Add the previously announced Paul Verhoeven plus Ildikó Enyedi, Mia Hansen-Løve, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Nadav Lapid, and Sean Penn to the Competition list.
They are still adding to UCR and the new Premieres section which presumably will exist for this year only.

Re: Festival Circuit 2021
All quibbles aside, this genuinely feels like the return of cinema for me—especially with Berlin rightfully being virtual. Frémaux still retains his same tendencies, but he still manages to deliver an agreeable selection. I wish a German film would crack the Competition, but I couldn't tell you which one. Maren Ade's 2016 Cannes smash was bumped into Competition at the last second, and with Christian Petzold seemingly utterly dedicated to Berlin, it may be until Ade's next film that a German film is in Competition. I don't why there's no Spanish language film, though—Frémaux rejected Martel's Zama in 2017, Reygadas the following year; it's probably better to not linger on it.
The French filmmakers appear to be in their typical cycle of "who hasn't been in Competition recently?" with Corsini, Ozon, and Dumont seemingly being the beneficiaries although the Dumont was taken from Barbera and Venice at the last second. Given how little he makes films, Carax may well be the only one guaranteed a Competition slot alongside Audiard, who hasn't been rejected since his 2009 film won the Grand Prix and was surely aided by Sciamma as a co-producer. Desplechin being in Competion in 2019 may have been a strike against him reappearing in Competition especially with this new Premieres section which just seems an excuse to keep film from Fortnight and Venice. If I had my druthers, Desplechin and Assayas would be the two French filmmakers given an automatic pass to Competition, but Desplechin has shown flexibility before with his wonderful Ismael's Ghosts opening the 2017 edition but not competing—plus, I suspect he cares less than I. I'm just happy Mia Hansen-Løve's in Competition, and her film being rejected by another festival means nothing; Terence Davies's magisterial Sunset Song ended up at San Sebastian. Her film looks lovely, a nice breeze. It always makes me wonder where Mia Wasikowska's been, but I imagine if you had her career from 2010-2015 in your early 20s, you'd slow down too. Ducournau is a welcome wildcard and perhaps capable of energizing the missed-year, unwieldy competition.
Enyedi's and Lapid's ascent into Competition is welcome, but also the sort of thing you're vaguely surprised didn't happen sooner. Maybe winning the top prize at another festival and having a relationship with Cannes makes you undeniable. This would seem to portends something for Mohammad Rasoulof, if true. Lafosse always seemed someone who'd eventually crack Competition. Nabil Ayouch is new to me. The Florida Project was the best film in any section in 2017, so obviously Sean Baker's a welcome addition regardless of his latest not seeming to go into the same depths as his previous film, but I'm only basing that off its title and star. The festival is generally more interesting when they refresh their Americans, and Baker is more fascinating than Ira Sachs, David Robert Mitchell, and the Safdies, of previous years. I don't think I have a good reason for missing his previous film (I'll catch up with it now!), but Juho Kuosmanen is a genuine surprise despite winning UCR five years ago.
Among the regulars: I'm only interested in Moretti, Trier, Farhadi, Serebrinnikov, Verhoeven, and Saleh-Haroun if the reviews are exceptional, or if they genuinely go in a different direction. I'm automatically not on the side of Kurzel's film based on the Port Arthur massacre for no other silly reason than he directed a video game movie, but I haven't seen Snowtown, and there's a lot of directions this film could go. Why it's titled after the perpetrator—spelled backwards is still spotlighting, no?—is beyond me.
The most hope lies in the Wes Anderson, the Carax, Weerasethakul, and Hamaguchi, all coincidentally (or not, given the pandemic) films that would have played last year.
