Re: Recent Film Restorations
There's also the issue of a few labs leaving heavy color-signatures on almost all of their color gradings, no matter the movies or the restorations' supervisions, most likely because of the use and abuse of a couple of LUTs on way too many movies.
IIRC, Black Moon was restored and graded by Eclair, and dozens of their color movies' restorations have a distinctive recognizable signature. They've recently restored some Pialat movies : of course you can spot their blues and oranges almost in 1 glance. And sure enough, those movies now share the color palette of Black Moon but also movies shot in the 50s or in the 90s.
The Eclair Cinematic Universe. And their opponent, the Ritrovata Cinematic Universe. And the smaller contenders : the Paramount Cinematic Universe and the Fox Deluxe Cinematic Universe.
It's not an issue of monitor, calibration, lack of references or supervisions.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
The Gaumont restorations inside the Louis Malle box set are quite controversial. I don't know for sure which restoration house did them - potentially Eclair - but many French (and Italian) restorations look leaning more toward either the teal or the yellow side. Their argument being that this looks closer to what would have been projected in a theater at the time, and hence a film print emulation LUT is applied.
I'm just not sure that this is really the case, though. Clearly many of the video and DVD-era telecine transfers were leaning too far toward magenta/pure white. And while it is true that a film print has certain color characteristics that are unlike these older telecine transfers, what some of the European restoration houses (Eclair, L'Immagine Ritrovata, etc.) deliver is clearly too strong in the other direction. I guess the truth may lie somewhere in between.

Is the Lumiere festival going to be streaming the films online or is it in-person?

Re: Recent Film Restorations
At first I thought Priest of Darkness might be a newly-rediscovered Yamanaka film -- but it turns out to just be a different title for Kochiyama Soshun.
Alas, I don't think of the TFF's films will be made available online (though supposedly some panels may be).

I have been curious about The Rickshaw Man. Would like to see a release with English subs, too.

Here are some horribly compressed low-quality clips that are supposed to demonstrate the restorations. These were provided to ISNA, an Iranian news agency, by National Film Archive of Iran.Stefan Andersson wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 12:59 pm“The Runner” (1984) by Amir Naderi

Re: Recent Film Restorations
I sure hope so : Lyon (like my current town Grenoble) just got upgraded to the Maximal Surveillance list for France's Coronavirus handling. This means all bars are closing down (not just past 10pm, but completely), restaurants will need to follow extremely heavy safety regulations, events can't have crowds larger than 1000 persons (which means that some of the events I'll attend will be about 70% empty since some places are designed to accept 3000 persons), no private assembly larger than 10 persons are allowed anymore (places like movie theaters are exempt because they have "extreme safety protocols in place"), and places like movie theaters or theaters will require attendees to wear a mask at all times (including once seated) AND to respect distanciation (ie 1 empty seat between groups - no idea how they'll handle that since pretty much all showings are already sold out through online advance booking which is unlikely to reflect how many empty seats are needed; hoprefully, they'll set up the showings capacity at 50% by default and that was it).
I do wonder what will be happening to the festival's bar, since it should theoretically be closed down, which is a shame because it was the perfect place to grab a coffee or a beer in-between movies. As for the rest, to be honest, it's just a ton of theatrical shows that will follow the health guidelines in place since some weeks already. I'm more afraid of the flow of people within the festival's "town hall", because it was designed more with a central hub than something more linear, so clearly, they'll have to do something to have the proper "entry this way / exit that way" flow of people.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Just saw it, it's a 2K restoration by the TFI from the OCN and looked on par with recent 2K restorations from the TFI for King Hu movies like The Fate of Lee Khan (MoC release). The worst issue is a couple of skipped frames at, IIRC, about an hour in. The introduction is also extremely wobbly and dupey, it's a long optical fade so I guess it's down to the elements but god the frame is warping quite intensely for these 4-5 minutes.
No color issue to mention IMO.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
This looks remarkably better than the source Criterion used (at least as represented on the Channel). Criterion's source looks softer with poorer contrast and the majority of the film shows visible wear-and-tear (lines, dirt specks, etc.). This new restoration looks pristine.Calvin wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 2:06 amIt's a new restorationcowboydan wrote:Does anyone know if this is sourced from the same master as the Criterion release?Jvlivs wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 3:25 pmMosfilm uploaded the restored Letter Never Sent on their YouTube channel in 4K and with English subtitles yesterday

Yeah, me too. It's amongst those I have no idea how it can look and it seems impossible to find out on the internet, so I'd have loved to be able to discover the movie through this new resto. But the pandemic gotta pandemic...
