Excellent next week. The big films are Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman on BBC4 at 10.45 p.m. on Saturday 15th (as already noted by jlnight), and the 2017 Rachel Weisz-starring version of the Daphne du Maurier story My Cousin Rachel on Film4 at 9 p.m. on Wednesay 19th.

BBC4's Storyville season continues at 10 p.m. on Monday 17th with Danish documentary Heartbound (which the BBC appear to have bizarrely, and slightly crassly, re-titled as "Fishing For Love: How To Catch A Thai Bride", for some reason!)

A few interesting repeats on Film4 too: Stalker is showing at 12.45 a.m. on Monday 17th. And there appears to be a mini-Michael Winterbottom season going on throughout the week with The Look of Love on Tuesday 16th at midnight, the Colin Firth 'ghostly Italy' romantic film about coming to terms with loss and grief Genova is on at 1.40 a.m. on Wednesday 19th (which I like thinking of as a strangely belated inverted non-horror version of Don't Look Now and Who Saw Her Die!), all building to surprisingly rare repeats of With Or Without You at 1.25 a.m. on Thursday 20th and 24 Hour Party People at 1.35 a.m. on Friday 21st. Though no UK broadcaster has dared to show 9 Songs as yet!

Interesting again next week. jlnight has noted the big films but its worth noting the highlights again. It is a very French and gay week with 120 Beats Per Minute on Film4 at 11 p.m. on Wednesday 26th (followed by a repeat of The Garden) and The Midwife, with Catherine Deneuve, on BBC4 at 10.45 p.m. on Saturday 22nd. And BBC4's Storyville documentary strand is showing Jonathan Agassi Saved My Life, about the gay porn star, although again they are doing a strange retitling thing and calling it by the blunter, cruder title of "The Rise and Fall of a Porn Superstar", and showing it at 10 p.m. on Monday 24th. It also looks as if it has been cut down to fit a 90 minute time slot, as it runs for 106 minutes according to the imdb page.

Film4 has repeats of Andrei Rublev at midnight on Sunday 23rd and a double of Kirk Douglas films with Last Train From Gun Hill at 1.20 p.m. followed by In Harm's Way at 3.15 p.m. on Monday 24th (ITV4 is showing Spartacus twice over the weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, so there's no escape!)

jlnight has already noted the two biggest films next week with the premiere of Hirokazu Kore-eda's After The Storm on BBC4 on Saturday 29th at 10.50 p.m., and Sofia Coppola's remake of The Beguiled on BBC2 at 11 p.m. on Friday 6th.

Otherwise it is quiet, though Film4 have two premieres, of Gifted at 9 p.m. on Tuesday 3rd (from that trailer I am perhaps too excited about the prospect of a no hold's barred punch up occurring between Octavia Spencer and Lindsay Duncan at some point!) and My Friend Dahmer at 9 p.m. on Thursday 5th.

BBC4's Storyville season continues on Monday 2nd at 10 p.m. with The Accused: Damned or Devoted?, "Following the stories and fates of four people accused of blasphemy in Pakistan"

The sci-fi film Passengers is showing on Channel 4 at 9 p.m. on Saturday 7th, but the most interesting film of the week is the premiere of the anime film Mary and the Witch's Flower on Film4 at 4.45 p.m., also on Saturday (in its English language version).

Also domino's favourite entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation with Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey is showing on the Horror channel at 11 p.m. on Sunday 8th.

I got a bit too excited by jlnight's mention of a TV series about Trigonometry, hoping for one of those dry 80s style Open University lecture series. But its yet another 'three's a crowd' relationship drama series. Sometimes I think television and myself just want different things! (The OU programme is far sexier, of course)

Rather quiet next week (though Hirokazu Kore-eda's I Wish is showing on Film4 at 1.20 a.m. in the early hours of Wednesday 18th), but probably the biggest thing outside of the premiere of A Quiet Place on Channel 4 tonight at 9 p.m. is on BBC4, which is somewhat out of nowhere showing Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans at 9 p.m. on Wednesday 18th, a feature documentary all about the making of the 1971 Le Mans film. But not the film itself! I cannot actually recall the last time that Le Mans was ever shown on UK television!

I guess it coincides with the release of that Ford v Ferrari film on home video this week? It is part of what seems to be a 'Le Mans night' on BBC4 with Hunt v Lauda: F1s Greatest Racing Rivals following at 10.35 p.m. and Sir Chris Hoy: 200 mph at Le Mans at 11.25 p.m.

But I kind of wish they'd shown the Le Mans film as well for much needed context! I guess though that it might bode well for that Lost Souls film to maybe turn up without having to show the 1996 Island of Dr Moreau as well!

And Mark Kermode's Secrets of Cinema series is back on BBC4 at 9 p.m. on Thursday 19th with an episode devoted to superheroes.

Diego Maradona, Sat 21st Mar, Channel 4. Or...
Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool, Sat 21st Mar, BBC2. (followed by Personal Shopper). Or...
Apprentice (2016), Sat 21st Mar, BBC4.

Mindhorn, Sun 22nd Mar, BBC2.

OJ: Made in America (repeat), starts Mon 23rd Mar, BBC4. (double bills on Tues and Weds).

Ship of Fools, Tue 24th Mar, Sony Movies Classic.
The Nile Hilton Incident, late Tue 24th Mar, Film4.

The Wind and The Lion, Thu 26th Mar, Sony Movies Classic. (been on countless times).
Cromwell, Thu 26th Mar, BBC4.

Young Winston, Fri 27th Mar, Sony Movies Classic.
Das Boot, Fri 27th Mar, Sony Movies Classic.

Cam Girlz, which I highlighted on London Live a few weeks back, is actually a documentary called Cam Girl (2018), directed by Jacky Goldberg and also known by the title Flesh Memory. Apologies for that!

The first two episodes of Trigonometry were scheduled to screen at the London Film Festival but they were apparently pulled at the last minute. No idea why.

BBC1 had an impromptu showing of Guardians of the Galaxy last Saturday that replaced the scheduled football, so I have seen my second Marvel film now. It was pretty good, good enough that I was not planning to watch it at all and ended up not being able to pull myself away, though also rather weird to see Peter Serafinowicz and Glenn Close together in a scene! There's more football scheduled for this upcoming Saturday so I'm excited to see what film they will replace it with! (Its a strangely nostalgic feeling to actually be anticipating a big film in the BBC1 Saturday night early evening schedule for the first time since the mid 1990s! But that will only last until the next reality gameshow series revs up at some point)

As jlnight notes, the big evening next week is Saturday 21st, though it is where Asif Kapadia's documentary about Diego Maradona at 9 p.m. on Channel 4 and the bizarre sight of Annette Bening as Gloria Grahame in the North West of England in Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool on BBC2 at 9 p.m. both end up clashing with the most interesting film of the week: Apprentice at 10.30 p.m. on BBC4.

Film4 has The Nile Hilton Incident at 1.45 a.m. in the early hours of Wednesday 25th.

The second episode of Mark Kermode's Secrets of Cinema is on BBC4 on Thursday 26th, covering "British History Movies", which is why Cromwell is showing afterwards at 10 p.m. Simultaneously ITV2 have realised after only ever showing it at 1 a.m. during the last two Christmas seasons that they have the zeitgeist film of the moment and are finally showing Steven Soderbergh's Contagion at primetime at 9 p.m on the same evening.

On Friday 27th at 10.45 p.m. BBC1 are showing Peter Weir's Witness for the first time in a while (I think the last time was in 2012?). And Dario Argento's Inferno is on Film4 at 2 a.m. on Saturday 28th.

So Marvel's Avenger's Assemble is the stopgap film pressed into service on BBC1 in today's early evening schedules to replace football.

Colin, you’ll catch up with the entire Marvel catalogue at this rate! Good rule of thumb: avoid all the 2s except Captain America’s.

Would skipping them miss out any important plot developments though, or are they like irrelevant in the long term, as with Star Wars Episode 8? Actually that reminds me of that line in American Dad:
American Dad wrote:"That's 2 Fast 2 Furious. Which means you've already seen the first one! How else could you possibly follow the highly cerebral storyline!"

GotG 2 is the best in that series. It's practically a Star Trek ToS episode staring idiots and Kurt Russell.

Irritatingly, when you get to Avengers Endgame there are significant callbacks to Thor 2 and Avengers Age of Ultron, two of the weaker entries.

The big films of next week are probably the premiere of Happy Death Day on Film4 at 9 p.m. on Friday 3rd and the Boston marathon bombing survivor film directed by David Gordon Green, Stronger, on BBC2 at 9 p.m. on Saturday 28th, which clashes with Girls Trip on Channel 4 at 9 p.m. also on Saturday 28th.

Similarly on Sunday 29th the premiere of Jawbone at 10.45 p.m. on BBC2 (with Ray Winstone and Ian McShane in a boxing drama 'grit off') clashes with the lifestory of Jacques Cousteau film noted by jlnight on BBC4 at 10 p.m., The Odyssey.

Also noted by jlnight is the other Film4 premiere of the week Leaning Into The Wind at 1.40 a.m. in the early hours of Thursday 2nd.

Happy Death Day appears to have been pulled from Film4's schedule this evening, replaced with a repeat of Blades of Glory.

Pretty good next week. Saturday 4th is the best day, though again everything clashes. War For The Planet of the Apes is on Channel 4 at 9 p.m., though I'm more interested in the first two episodes (out of eight) of Norwegian thriller Twin on BBC4 at 9 p.m. and then as jlnight notes Ghost Stories is showing at 10.45 p.m. on BBC2 (which is the film I am most interested in this week)

BBC1 has a rare big film premiere with A Monster Calls at 10.30 p.m. on Sunday 5th, which seems in the same vein as Bridge To Terabithia.

The Horror channel is following up Hellraiser tonight with Hellbound: Hellraiser II at 11.15 p.m. on Good Friday.

Quite an eclectic mix next week: Stephen Frears's follow up to Mrs Brown also stars Judi Dench tackling another stage in the life of Queen Victoria with Victoria & Abdul on BBC2 on Saturday 11th at 9.15 p.m.

Channel 4 has Transformers spin-off Bumblebee at 5.45 p.m. on Sunday 12th. Film4 is showing horror film The Ritual at 9 p.m. on Tuesday 14th and as jlnight notes Border is on Film4 at 11.20 p.m. on Friday 17th.

But most interesting are the first two episodes of Devs showing on BBC2 at 9 p.m. on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th, directed by Alex Garland and starring Sonoya Mizuno and Karl Glusman (the star of Gaspar Noe's Love).

Repeat-wise BBC2 is showing The Greatest Story Ever Told, with Max Von Sydow at Jesus, at 12 noon on Saturday 11th and Clouds of Sils Maria is on BBC2 at 11 p.m. also on Saturday 11th. Loveless is on Channel 4 at 1 a.m. in the early hours of Easter Monday. And BBC4 are repeating Wolf Hall in double bills from 10 p.m. over three nights from Easter Sunday to Tuesday 14th, presumably to tie in with the release of Hilary Mantel's final book in the Thomas Cromwell trilogy, The Mirror and the Light.
