Sky Pirates (CFF), Sat 18th Sep, Talking Pictures.

Swallows and Amazons (1974), Sun 19th Sep, Talking Pictures. Also Thu 23rd Sep. (been on the BBC)
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sun 19th Sep, London Live.
Last Man Standing: Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie and Tupac, Sun 19th Sep, BBC2.

Inseminoid, Mon 20th Sep, London Live. (last on the BBC in 2008?)
It's Only the End of the World, late Mon 20th Sep, Film4.

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell + Quicksand, Fri 24th Sep, Talking Pictures. (Cellar Club)
Mid90s, Fri 24th Sep, Film4.

The one-day Cricket World Cup final from 2019 (England v NZ) was hastily put on Channel 4 even though Sky had the rights. The gamble paid off just as it did last night, with apparently 9m viewers tuning in to the US Open Final! From my memories the US Open was always a Sky tournament.

Pretty quiet next week with only two big premieres but a lot of ongoing TV series and lots and lots of repeats going on.

Nick Broomfield's follow up to his 2001 Biggie & Tupac film, Last Man Standing: Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie and Tupac is showing on BBC2 at 9 p.m. on Sunday 19th. And the other premiere is Jonah Hill's directorial debut mid90s showing on Film4 at 10:50 p.m. on Friday 24th, which thankfully does not clash with the third episode of The North Water on BBC2 at 9:30 p.m. the same evening (I caught the first episode of that last Friday and, gosh, that show features more enthusiastic seal clubbing than an all night dance party playing only Kiss From A Rose!)

In terms of repeats jlnight has noted the most important one with Xavier Dolan's Its Only The End Of The World showing on Film4 at 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday 21st. The 5Star digital channel has a pretty fun week too by showing Event Horizon for the first time in a while at 12:45 a.m. on Monday 20th and the same time on Saturday 25th, as well as the 1992 Drew Barrymore-starring erotic thriller Poison Ivy at 11 p.m. on Tuesday 21st. ITV4 is showing Platoon and The Silence of the Lambs a couple of times during the week, along with Captain Phillips twice for the first time on UK television since 2018.

But its really Film4 doing lots of re-showings of recent premieres in a schedule cleanse, with films like On The Road, Sicario 2, Assassination Nation, Departure and The Nile Hilton Incident all getting re-showings. Though the rarer repeat on the channel that week is the 2007 rape-revenge thriller with Gillian Anderson and Danny Dyer Straightheads showing at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday 25th.

___

Whilst it is a bit quiet next week I wanted to quickly mention something showing tomorrow that I had overlooked: BBC1 did an Imagine... episode interviewing Tom Stoppard last Thursday and tomorrow BBC4 is doing a Tom Stoppard evening, repeating the documentary at 9 p.m. and showing Shakespeare In Love at 10:30 p.m., but of most interest is a very rare showing at 8 p.m. of the 1975 TV film Three Men In A Boat, that was adapted by Stoppard, stars Tim Curry (the same year he was in The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Michael Palin, and was directed by Stephen Frears. (If you cannot wait it is up here :-$ )

Rather quiet next week with only a couple of new films (though lots of Bond-related programmes going up to the release of No Time To Die, with the main one being an hour long exit interview with Daniel Craig on ITV1 at 10:20 p.m. on Sunday 26th. BBC4 basically repeats their "Bond night" of a couple of years ago with re-showings of those programmes throughout the week).

BBC2 is showing gay conversion therapy drama Boy Erased at 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday 29th, and as jlnight has noted the big film of the week is Monos showing on Film4 at 11:25 p.m. on Thursday 30th (followed quite aptly by a repeat of Under The Skin, as Mica Levi did the music for both films). The third premiere of the week is Super Troopers 2 on Channel 4 at 2:10 a.m. in the early hours of Saturday 2nd.

And the final Film Programme airs on Radio 4 at 4 p.m. on Thursday 30th.
___

Repeat-wise Channel 5 is showing an entire day devoted to Clint Eastwood on Saturday 25th with the centrepiece being a documentary Clint Eastwood: The Man and The Movies at 7:55 p.m. - it is the usual line up of films with Every Which Way But Loose, Joe Kidd and Two Mules For Sister Sara but after the documentary at 9:20 p.m. there is a screening of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, which is always worth noting! To cap off a Clint Eastwood-themed week, ITV4 is showing Pale Rider at 9 p.m. on Wednesday 29th and BBC1 is showing one of his directed films, Invictus, at 11:25 p.m. on Friday 1st.

Really good next week, as jlnight has noted, but of course somehow all three channels premiering films on the evening of Saturday 2nd manage to make them clash together!

Channel 4 is showing Elton John biopic Rocketman at 9 p.m. directed by Dexter Fletcher, who I still associate more with starring in The Rachel Papers and hosting the third season of Gamesmaster in Dominik Diamond's absence before Diamond returned for series 4 on (I hope that Fletcher is getting interviewed for that book on the history of the show that is currently being Kickstarted!)

The much more exciting premiere is over on BBC4 at the exact same time with Hirokazu Kore-eda's foray into French cinema with The Truth starring Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche. Whilst Film4 is showing probably the last sight of Shane Carruth that we may be privy to for a while with his acting role in The Dead Center at 11:15 p.m. (in an interesting thematic double bill with a repeat of Thelma)

On Sunday 3rd BBC2 is showing If Beale Street Could Talk at 9:45 p.m. (followed by a repeat of I Am Not Your Negro at 11:35 p.m. - Selma is also showing on BBC2 at 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday 6th). BBC1 is showing Rosie at 12:20 a.m. in the early hours of Monday 4th, which is based on a Roddy Doyle story and from the director of that 2007 horror film following in the twisty tradition of Switchblade Romance and The Descent about someone hopped up unwittingly on magic mushrooms conjuring up a killer to murder all her friends, Shrooms!

There is also an interesting programme on BBC4 on Sunday evening, with a 90 minute documentary about "Britain's first independent television producer" Christopher Nupen, who has produced a number of documentaries about classical musicians. Listening Through The Lens is narrated by Stephen Fry and showing at 9 p.m., followed by a repeat of his 2008 film We Want The Light: Jews and German Music at 10:30 p.m.
___
Lots of interesting repeats too. jlnight has noted a screening of The Babadook on BBC4 at 9 p.m. on Thursday 7th, which is followed by a Mark Kermode Secrets of Cinema episode on horror and the Psycho shower scene documentary 78/52 at 11:30 p.m.

For my money the most exciting repeat of the week (and the must see film for anyone who likes talking long nature walks) is the first showing since its premiere over a decade or more ago of Gus van Sant's Gerry. That's on Film4 at 1:45 a.m. on Monday 4th. (That's still two more times than Elephant or Last Days have shown on UK television though!)

Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding is also getting a very rare screening on Film4 at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday 6th. And Robert Aldrich's Attack! is also showing on Film4 at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday 6th.

BBC2 shows a couple of classic 1940s films during the week with Crossfire showing at 2:20 p.m. on Monday 4th (ah, remember those days where theatrical trailers raised hype for their films by showing how the script was photocopied and OK'd!) and Nicholas Ray's A Woman's Secret at 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday 5th.

Clearly a few Roger Michell tributes there - and a couple of them I haven't seen.

There is some kind of sobering irony in noting that all of the interview subjects in Nothing Like A Dame, in a documentary in some ways being created as a last hurrah to them, managed to outlive their decades-younger director.

Lots of stuff next week, with a very horror film tinge on the run up to Halloween. BBC1 is showing Game Night at 10:35 p.m. on Saturday 9th. That clashes against the latest foreign language crime series beginning on BBC4 with the first two episodes of Paris Police 1900 showing from 9 p.m.

Everything clashes together on the evening of Sunday 10th with BBC1 premiering the Zach Braff directed, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman starring Going In Style at 10:30 p.m.; BBC2 is showing The Conjuring 2 at 10:45 p.m. (which is based on the same haunting case that the BBC's notorious Halloween film Ghostwatch was based on! The BBC seem to be on a James Wan kick next week as The Conjuring is showing on BBC2 at 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday 13th - which has previously only shown on ITV2 - and then BBC4 shows a repeat double-bill of The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 from 9 p.m. on Thursday 14th), which is showing straight after the Dave series returns for season 2 with its first two episodes at 9:45 p.m.; and Channel 4 shows The Last Tree at 11:30 p.m. (and that all clashes with Film4's tribute to the late Roger Michell with My Cousin Rachel and Enduring Love from 11:35 p.m.)

The most interesting film of the week is This Is Not A Burial, It's A Resurrection showing on Channel 4 at 1:55 a.m. in the early hours of Tuesday 12th. Film4 is showing Blindspotting at 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday 13th.

Though the biggest premiere of the week is the first showing of the 2018 David Gordon Green version of Halloween at 11:25 p.m. on Friday 15th.
___
The big news in repeats has been noted by jlnight with lots of films showing in tribute to Roger Michell: My Cousin Rachel and Enduring Love on Film4 from 11:35 p.m. on Sunday 10th; The Mother (which is probably the rarest screening of all, as I do not think it has been repeated since its initial premiere on BBC2 back in the mid-2000s) and Nothing Like A Dame in a double bill on BBC4 from 9 p.m. on Tuesday 12th; and Venus on Film4 at 12:35 a.m. on Thursday 14th. I would not be surprised if Notting Hill turns up on one of the ITV channels in the next week or two, once word filters down to them.

Speaking of ITV channels, ITV4 is showing Pitch Black at 10 p.m. on Wednesday 13th and 11 p.m. Friday 15th. Channel 5 is showing Close Encounters of the Third Kind at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday 9th, and Dirty Harry at 10 p.m. on Friday 15th which potentially may be the first time that the film has shown on television in its original widescreen ratio. And perhaps to coincide with The North Water finishing this coming Friday, Film4 is repeating Andrew Haigh's Lean On Pete at 1 a.m. in the early hours of Tuesday 12th.

It also turns out from a recent trailer that BBC4 is doing a "Horror season" over October. We've seen The Babadook and 78/52 last Thursday and this week has the double bill of the first two Conjuring movies, but also in the list of upcoming films are Poltergeist, Interview With The Vampire, Halloween (though it is probably likely to be a repeat of the 2018 version) and Don't Look Now. Though most notable is that apparently BBC4 is going to repeat The Exorcist at some point, which if it happens I think may be the first time the BBC has ever shown the film, with it mainly having appeared on Channel 4, and I think not since 2012.

(I have a strong suspicion it is showing purely to have Mark Kermode's Fear of God documentary attached to it!)

There's a story that when this film was in production, the crew would say to people, "Take a good look - this could be the last black and white film ever made in this country." It wasn't of course, and wasn't even the last black and white British film of the 1960s. (Inadmissible Evidence was.)

Not as packed as this week but still quite interesting next week. jlnight has noted most of the interesting things.

On Saturday 16th everything inevitably clashes together with episodes 3 and 4 of Paris Police 1900 on BBC4 up against three premieres with ear for eye at 10:15 p.m. on BBC2 and Channel 4's first screening of Venom at 9 pm., which is probably to coincide with the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage into cinemas. And the Horror Channel is showing Nicolas Cage in rare crazy mode in Mom and Dad at 9 p.m.

The CBBC channel is showing Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday 16th.

BBC4 pretty much wins the week however by screening the film that Dardenne Brothers won the Best Directing prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival for in Young Ahmed at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday 17th. And excitingly BBC4's Friday music night slot is premiering Zappa at 9 p.m. on the evening of the 22nd, which is directed by Alex Winter, who made Freaked but is probably still best known for playing Bill in the Bill & Ted films.

___
TV-wise, BBC2 is beginning the third American Crime Series: Impeachment from 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday 19th (is the way that all of the actors look as if they are under a lot of prosthetics that make them look eerily unlike their real-world counterparts meant to be satirical in some way? If the show is anything like the trailers so far, I would expect the phrase "uncanny valley" to start getting thrown around a lot in reviews! EDIT: That's apparently Clive Owen as Clinton(!?!?!?))

Slightly more promising is that BBC1 have moved away from showing recent US TV series to showing recent Australian TV series with the first two episodes of Bump showing at 10:35 p.m. on Wednesday 20th.
___
Repeat-wise, there is not too much: BBC2 is showing An Impossible Love at 1:10 a.m. on Sunday 17th; A Touch of Sin is showing on Film4 at 1:25 a.m. on Monday 18th; Picnic At Hanging Rock is showing on Film4 at 1 a.m. on Friday 22nd; and BBC4 is showing a double bill of the original Poltergeist and 2018 Halloween from 9 p.m. on Thursday 21st.

Relatively quiet next week. jlnight has already noted the biggest film of the week with (the released on Criterion) Wildlife showing on BBC2 at 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday 27th.

It is pretty much BBC2's week with the premiere of Eighth Grade showing at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday 24th (after Dave), and the beginning of Brian Cox's (no, not that one's) new starry-eyed series Universe at 9 p.. on Wednesday 27th.

There's also another TV series of interest starting on BBC1 on Monday 25th at 9 p.m. - The Outlaws directed and co-written by Stephen Merchant (with the writer of the Mayans MC series!) and featuring the bizarre image of Christopher Walken being forced to do community service on the streets of Bristol! (I am a little worried that the series will get 'easily topical' by having one of the young offenders forced into their community service after having vandalised a local statue!)

And Film4 get into the Halloween mood with their premiere of The Prodigy at 9 p.m. on Friday 29th.

Other than that it is pretty quiet. For repeats BBC2 is showing the South Korean film The Age of Shadows at 12:40 a.m. on Sunday 23rd (the overnight of Saturday/Sunday evenings is fast becoming a place for BBC2 to repeat their foreign language films that had previously been premiered on BBC4 in clean, un-DOG-tagged versions) and BBC4 continues to devote Thursday evenings to horror film double bills with Don't Look Now and Interview With The Vampire showing from 9 pm on the 28th. Also the 5Star channel is showing the original Nightmare on Elm Street at 11 p.m. on Tuesday 26th, which I think is the first time that the film has played on any of the main channels since Channel 4 premiered it all the way back in 1994!

I think A Nightmare on Elm Street has definitely played on Channel 5 this century, which is where I would have seen it. It played on Channel 4 as far back as 1992!

Now that you mention it, I think that I remember that screening! Though not from watching it but because my mum quite sternly warned me off from watching it (I also remember that 1992 or 1993 was the period of Channel 4's "Banned" season where they screened Monty Python's Life of Brian for the first time on network television, which my parents debated about letting me watch. It seems particularly ridiculous now that it is such a comedy classic that there was a time when it getting shown on television could have been another example of Channel 4's boundary pushing. Channel 4 of course later on premiered The Last Temptation of Christ too in their Century of Cinema season in 1995!)

That memory, along with in my early teens 'illicitly' getting hold of my mother's rented VHS tape of I think Nightmare On Elm Street 3 and watching the dream opening before getting too scared and putting it back, probably led to my thinking that Nightmare on Elm Street was the 'ultimate scary horror film series'. So much so that when it was shown again in December 1994 I was too nervous to watch it! (And instead watched Channel 4's premiere of Tetsuo: The Iron Man the week after instead, which really messed me up! :P )

It would make sense if Nightmare on Elm Street was shown since on Channel 5, though I don't recall it happening. But after getting the DVD boxset of all the films in the early 2000s (with that interesting experiment in presenting the extra features on the Nightmare Encyclopedia disc. Most of the extra features were accessible through the index, but I think that there are still some easter eggs hidden on there in the Labyrinth section), I would not have been looking. Aside from the first film and Channel 4 showing Wes Craven's New Nightmare a few times in the late 1990s, I'm not sure if any of the other films in that series have appeared on the main UK TV channels. Though they are really the only ones you need to see (plus Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors as well).

Incidentally, watching Poltergeist again a couple of days ago reminded me that it did the Fred Astaire Royal Wedding trick of having a rotating room that makes a character look as if they are literally climbing the walls a couple of years before Nightmare on Elm Street did it.

Not a great week but still a few films I was not previously aware of get premiered. The majority of new content is on Sunday 31st with ITV1 getting into the Halloween spirit with the premiere of Goosebumps 2 at 2:10 p.m.

Channel 4 has a night of premieres on Halloween night with Steve McQueen's version of Lynda LaPlante's Widows at 9 p.m. Apparently The Last Tree was postponed from a few weeks back and instead gets premiered at 11:35 p.m. (which still clashes with three other things on the other channels!) and then that is followed at 1:25 a.m. by 2:22, which has a trailer that appears to be entirely formed out of cliché lines of dialogue from a dozen other sci-fi action films! (I mean the first two lines are entirely lifted from The Matrix and Pi!) And I presume this is a time looping melding of the premises of 12:01 and James Herbert's The Survivor, i.e. that:
SpoilerShow
presumably the two main characters will have been dead all along, and the main character will have to Donnie Darko himself to give his love interest a chance of survival.
It is films like this that look fun but completely unoriginal that sometimes make me wish I had seen fewer movies in order to pre-empt the plot beats less!

BBC1 has a couple of premieres over the week with Elle Fanning in Teen Spirit at Midnight on Monday 1st October, which despite being premiered on Halloween and with a spooky title is not a sequel to Ghost Dad but instead a kind of dance drama? That's the directing debut of actor Max Minghella (Anthony Minghella's son). The soundtrack, the cast and and stylings make it the most interesting looking film of the week, although it is all combining to make me wonder if this is the UK equivalent of The Neon Demon, which is creating such high expectations that it can only lead to disappointment! (Its also rated 12 rather than 18, so I guess no necrophilia and cannibalism? Maybe it could just be implied at the lower category? )

The other premiere on BBC1 is The Sun Is Also A Star at 12:15 a.m. on Saturday 6th November. Which appears to be the second film of the week about cosmically inexplicable 'all is connected' love stories involving accidents. Though I keep getting amused by a completely inaccurate feeling that the trailer is obscuring the fact that its a Fifty Shades of Grey film. Maybe it is the way that the male lead looks like a dull, quick to anger lunk hiding a dark secret that is leading me to feel that this film is probably going to involve specialised contract negotiations in order to save the heroine's family from being deported.

With Halloween over the 1st November obviously means that Channel 5 has to change its TV movie rotation from threateningly paranoid stalker thrillers back to gloriously sappy Christmas films! We're still gearing up at this stage so there are only five premieres over the week on Channel 5 (with A Christmas Mission, A Christmas Surprise, Delivered By Christmas, Christmas at Maple Creek and Cooking Up Christmas) but surprisingly BBC2 gets in on the action too on Friday 5th with Heart of the Holidays at 1 p.m.!

And BBC2 is starting to show the third series of What We Do In The Shadows from 10 p.m. on Tuesday 2nd (following American Crime Story: Impeachment. I only caught a little of this yesterday evening, but the only way to make Bill Clinton appear sexy and smouldering at all was having Clive Owen play him! So I guess I approve?)

Channel 5 has the only new horror-related show of the week with The Small Hand: A Ghost Story starring Douglas Henshall showing at 10 p.m. on Sunday 31st.
___

Repeat-wise, lots of horror stuff around Halloween. BBC2 shows The Exorcist at 10:40 p.m. on Saturday 30th, which is repeated on BBC4 at 10 p.m. on Thursday 4th preceded by Tubular Bells: The Mike Oldfield Story at 9 p.m. and inevitably followed by Mark Kermode's Fear of God documentary at 11:55 p.m.

ITV2 is showing It Chapter One again at 9 p.m. on Saturday 30th. Film4 has the original Halloween at 10:55 p.m. on Saturday 30th and Halloween III at 11:15 p.m. on Sunday 31st. Channel 5 has a double bill of Nicholas Roeg's version of The Witches and Beetle Juice from 3:40 p.m. on Sunday 31st.

Other than that it is pretty quiet, although there is a surprising rare repeat of the Tom Cruise film The Firm (aka the film that kicked off all the other wave of John Grisham adaptations that came throughout the rest of the 1990s) on Channel 5 at 11 p.m. on Thursday 4th.

BBC4 has a really interesting Halloween night with a repeat of a 1996 TV adaptation of Death of a Salesman at 7 p.m. followed by a profile of Arthur Miller at 9:15 p.m., then at 10:15 p.m. a rare showing of The Stalls of Barchester, a 1971 adaptation of an MR James story. Though if you cannot wait (or like me are recording a number of other things at the same time, or already have the BFI sets of the BBC's Ghost Story For Christmas series) it is currently up on YouTube.

It's a shame that BBC4 has been rendered virtually unwatchable by the new DOG.

It is much brighter and larger, and just after the previous one had seemed as if it had dimmed down to a much more tolerable light grey for the last week or two before the changeover!
