Christopher Nolan shopping a script about J. Robert Oppenheimer - surprise surprise, there's a good chance it doesn't end up with Warners given the Tenet release fiasco

Re: New Films in Production, v.2
I understand business is business, but I would think Warner Bros. having given Nolan (and his family members) hundreds of millions and total creative freedom over the years would account for something. Then again, maybe there’s no one left at WB to whom Nolan might owe any sense of loyalty.

The film will be produced at Universal, with production looking to start in Q1 2022.Never Cursed wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 7:54 pmChristopher Nolan shopping a script about J. Robert Oppenheimer - surprise surprise, there's a good chance it doesn't end up with Warners given the Tenet release fiasco

Wow, they really must have pissed him off. Hard to think of any other modern studio-auteur relationship as strong as Nolan and WB

Funny. After I made my post about Nolan above, I had a second thought of "Well, this might be something Universal would throw a lot of money at, hoping for a repeat performance of 1917" and well well well.

Cillian Murphy will star as Oppenheimer, which is apparently also the film's title (for now)yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 11:57 amThe film will be produced at Universal, with production looking to start in Q1 2022.Never Cursed wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 7:54 pmChristopher Nolan shopping a script about J. Damon's gotta be playing Leslie Groves and I bet Downey Jr is Oppy's brother Frank.Jack Kubrick wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 11:44 amMatt Damon and Robert Downey Jr joined the cast.Never Cursed wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 7:54 pmChristopher Nolan shopping a script about J. Oppenheimer's bio is pretty interesting politically, academically, and professionally (even before the Manhattan Project) but I wonder what Nolan's approach will be given his adolescent obsession with formal gameplaying and sleight-of-hand. Can't see him playing fast and loose with the facts here, but a mere soap opera recital of the events of his life would seem pointless, like 99% of all biopics. There's a couple fascinating romantic relationships, his partnership with Groves (this may be the crux -- without Groves' guidance and drive the Project would have failed, or at least taken many years longer) and of course the fallout and burden of what he "accomplished". But unless Nolan exhibits a virtuoso Malick-level technique and depth, I'm not sure what he point is.
I just hope there's room for a Dwight Schultz cameo.

Nolan did play fast and loose with Nikola Tesla's bio in The Prestige, although he was a minor character

The Hollywood Reporter says that Damon is indeed playing Groves, but Downey is playing Lewis Strauss.

Now with Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, and Benny Safdie. Pugh plays Jean Tatlock, a CPUSA member who has an affair with Oppenheimer, Safdie plays father of the hydrogen bomb Edward Teller, and Malek plays a scientist. Seems as though the film is going to deal in some form with the revocation of Oppenheimer's security clearance, an interesting and less-remembered aspect of his life story

Christopher Nolan's assumption of control over the James Bond franchise will be suitably explosive.

Apparently including scenes shot in B&W with IMAX film cameras, which required the special manufacture of B&W 65mm negative stock.domino harvey wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 8:10 pmPortions of and possibly the entire film will be shot in B&W
You have to hand it to Nolan for digging his heels in and insisting on analogue capture despite the high costs involved and the paucity of cinemas that can actually project film. There were only around 13 IMAX film prints of Tenet struck and (due to Covid) only eight cinemas worldwide which screened them.

Trailer - not sure what I was expecting but I think this looks great. I love all the wild CGI screensaver stuff

Cillian Murphy seems so into the role that it changed the character of his face. Looks good, hopefully Nolan has returned to Earth after Tenet.
