COLD EYES OF FEAR
(Enzo G Castellari, 1971)
Release date: 26 June 2023
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere) and Blu-ray (separate editions)

Pre-order on 4K UHD or Blu-ray.

Directed by Italian genre-film stalwart Enzo G Castellari (Inglorious Bastards), Cold Eyes of Fear (Gli occhi freddi della paura) is a tense and brutal thriller which features an all-star line-up, including Gianni Garko (If You Meet Sartana Pray for Your Death), Fernando Rey (The French Connection), Giovanna Ralli (What Have They Done to Your Daughters?), and Frank Wolff (Once Upon a Time in the West).

When wealthy playboy Peter Flower picks up the beautiful Anna and takes her back to his uncle’s house, he and his guest find that their plans for the evening are cut short by the shocking discovery of a corpse and the surprise appearance of a pair of violent criminals.

With its vibrant London locations and discordant jazz score – composed by the great Ennio Morricone and performed by the legendary free-improvisation collective, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – this stylish home-invasion thriller is presented in an all-new 4K restoration from the original negative.

Bit cheeky calling this a giallo on the box. A bottle of J&B does feature, there are crash-zooms and a Morricone score, but that’s about it.

You ain’t kidding. Even for a Castellari fan like myself, this one’s a bust. Aside from a bizarrely random biker fight, it’s sorely lacking what Castellari does best - action, baby! Sartana may be the star, but even he can’t get the fuse lit this time.

As reaky says, this largely one-location home invasion flick is certainly not a giallo, and not much of a thriller. It’s more of a proto-House on the Edge of the Park, sharing the typical Italian focus on class conflict but lacking that flick’s gruesome and gonzo shock value. This one’s a slog. You’ll watch it once and never again. Best to stick with Street Law, The Big Racket, and the awesome Keoma.

To qualify as a giallo, there has to be both a crime and mystery element. But I'd argue that both are clearly present here - the crime needs no explanation, but there are several layers of mystery concerning the identity of the various characters, their real motives, and of course the extremely giallo-like use of a deliberately ungrammatical Latin phrase as a means of surreptitiously transmitting information under the noses of the people notionally monitoring it. (For me, the latter point alone pushes the film firmly into giallo territory.)
