UK is getting a new edition of Bicycle Thieves using the recent 4k restoration.
So this has some new video extras, but drops a couple of biggies from the previous release.
  • Timeless Cinema or That's Life: Vittorio De Sica is on the Criterion Umberto D Blu-ray
  • Lizzani's documentary on Cesare Zavattini (not listed on IMDb!) is on the Criterion Bicycle Thieves Blu-ray and on the 2-disc Cristaldi Film I bambini ci guardano DVD
A bit disappointing the latter isn't being ported across.

I thought this would be a port of the restoration used by Criterion in 2016 but have been pointed out that it might actually use the 2018 4K restoration performed by Ritrovata instead.

New announcements for Academy this week, here's the clue:
SpoilerShow
Image
One assumes it's fairly likely to refer to Trip to the Moon or maybe a 4K of Cinema Paradiso (or Inglorious Basterds, which I guess includes film as a plot point).

Worth noting that the film strip is 16mm film stock. Not sure if that's an intentional part of the clue.

Edit: I take that back! Looks like Super8!

Given that Arrow is prone to giving clues like “a bulldog in a military uniform“ for Doberman Cop, I tend not to consider any details in their clues as having intent. (I usually just ignore their clues entirely and wait for the announcements, or a leak from Amazon.)

So there’s been talk of a new Friday the 13th series box set, and the reasonable assumption seems to’ve been that Scream Factory are a likely candidate for the ones working on it.

Arrow just sent out a newsletter mentioning an upcoming July sale, referring to it as Camp Arrow Video. I can’t help wondering if the two might tie together, or if it’s just another wacky promo idea by Team Arrow.

I thought it might just be to push slashers like The Burning.

Does Arrow have a relationship with Paramount? I can’t keep track anymore!

I think they may have released a few titles that Kino or Olive released (like Bound, but I'm not sure who has the UK rights to that,) but they dont seem to have the Shout/Scream or Criterion access.

I think most (if not all?) are titles from Republic Pictures.

Yeah, and Arrow aren’t the ones who’ve recently started releasing Paramount/Warner titles but I’m with domino, I can’t keep track.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single current Paramount title (as opposed to a pre-1950 title that’s been with Universal for 70 years) that Arrow’s managed to license.

The Bells of St Mary's, Dark City and The Sender are all via Paramount - there may be others.

If they are going to more from Bernard Rose's filmography I really hope they can do Paperhouse.

They will also be releasing Mallrats in the US/CA.

After a few months of... to put it kindly, titles of waning interest besides the 4K developments... it's reassuring to see that no, Arrow (Video) hasn't just run out of movies to release.

It's mostly due to specific nostalgia, but I love Mallrats. The film doesn't always work but Jason Lee's perf on the game show has made me laugh harder than most movies at a certain time of life, and the running 'kid on the escalator' joke, as well as the reveal about why everyone sees the the sailboat painting, are still funny.

Agreed. I still get a kick out of Claire Forlani attempting to do an American accent.

I hope you're speaking for yourself, Ribs :)
I've personally been perfectly happy with a number of recent announcements, but if they keep announcing titles like Pitch Black & Mallrats, I might start thinking that way myself.

Very curious to see if there will be anything new to Mallrats, considering the prior DVDs and blu-rays have been pretty stacked.

I mostly agree with you Ribs. I think I've been excited by three of Arrow's announcements this year: the Gamera box set , the Solid Metal Nightmares box set, and, now, the Graveyard of Honor set (although this one is more for finally getting them on Blu, as the announced extras are not very exciting.)

I quite agree with Ribs too. I've been very open-minded with what Arrow has been releasing, especially under the Video branch, but I've grown extremely weary of their deluxe treatment of what turns mostly out to be mediocre-at-best movies. So when a non-negligible chunk of the remaining movies are recent stuff that don't feel particularly memorable (like Aniara or Satanic Panic, for instance), that doesn't leave much.
I quit my job in July 2019 and thought the lack of funds would leave me frustrated with Arrow's output, but it turned out they're actually probably the one label I feel I'm really not missing much : I just had a quick look and out of their 2020 releases, I've found only 9 out of 39 I would probably have bought. That used to be a single month purchase to me.

But I don't doubt some are very happy with Dream Demon, Blood Tide, I See You or Edge of the Axe. I'm actually happy not to see too many releases I'd like to buy but don't have the money for !
