I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole the last few weeks of watching Korean street vendors make food (always with lots of butter or lard or shortening) on YT in very ASMR videos without any talking or text explaining what’s being made. These videos can be oddly entertaining and soothing, but they’re also often surprisingly frustrating— Like, this is just hour of the worst-looking fried sandwiches you’ll ever see, and more than once I wished I could reach through the screen and correct them in presentation and preparation. Biggest cultural takeaway: Koreans apparently love garbage white sandwich bread

Full disclosure, I haven't checked out any of the videos, but are they using milk bread?

It looks like white American sandwich bread. But a Google image search of milk bread returns some loaves that look like that. So, possibly? It would make me feel better if that was the case. Some of the ones in the video above sure do look like store brand, super thin uniform sliced white bread though. And there's still no excuse for stacking two split hot dogs on top of each other instead of side by side on a sandwich. Like, come on now.

I'd be curious what the white powder they generously shake on some of the final products is as well (can't remember if it's in this video, but I see it in a lot of these videos, and it's notable because most of the Korean street food in these videos has no seasoning in the ingredients and then they add a shit ton of sauces in the end to factor flavor enhancing in, unless it's this white stuff)

I swear to God these Korean street food cooking videos are going to kill me, why do I keep watching? The latest one in my YT feed features a chef using a blowtorch on a nonstick pan

Looks like BA just came back last month after three off. Haven’t checked to see if any of the new videos are any good though.

Can’t say I’m feeling any of the new hosts/format. Rick Martinez has a new show on the Food52 channel though for those who want a more old school BA feel

Internet Shaquille comes through with the only April Fools video worth watching for the second year in a row with today's parody of YT tech reviews - if you haven't seen it, his brutal catalog of every bad YT and TikTok cooking channel's tics in last year's video is even better, though it helps to watch a few other Internet Shaquille videos to get the joke of how far removed these are from his usual tone and approach

How did you end up serving as the director of photography for R.E.M.'s "The One I Love" video?

It was happenstance. I had come over here [Athens, GA] and started with a small production company here that had done some earlier work with those guys. They brought in this New York artist who was a good friend of Michael Stipe's at the time, Robert Longo. I met with him, and he asked me to be (the director of photography) on that and asked me to be the steady cam operator on that, because he was a big fan of that tool, which I was a specialist in at the time. So I shot that and ended up shooting some other MTV pieces, and that kind of gave me a big jump. ... The R.E.M. thing shot me onto other work and, you know, things happen.

I never really explore this kind of show due to lack of time, but it was fun to come close to it in Pig's bonus features, wherein Nic Cage cooks with Portland-area chefs to prepare for his role. He's not only learning some rudiments of prepping and cooking the food but also, of course, thinking about the process as an actor, and I liked seeing moments when it appeared he was doing that. One highlight from these was a few minutes into this one when he momentarily feels a bit godlike squeezing a ball of dough for a tart (not a pie!). "I'm shaping the Earth."

That’s so weird to me.

For context non-watchers, one of the bakers said she was making a charlotte with peanut butter and berries. The judges then reacted like that was the weirdest combination ever. I would have thought that American cultural impact would at least normalize it?

I've heard peanut butter is considered disgusting by many in the UK (although this comes from Buzzfeed listicles of them clipping tweets about the subject). From that I can only speculate that PB isn't used much over there in any capacity but forum members from across the pond can feel free to announce their peanut-mush love and call me horribly misinformed.

Google tells me it is slightly growing in popularity in the UK, but my understanding is that the non-US world overall has a hard time in general with peanuts in sweet snacks (including peanut butter) due to their use in many savory dishes of a variety of national cuisines

Dunno where you got that impression. Multiple brands of peanut butter are available in the spreads section of every decent sized supermarket in the UK and have been for yonks.

And this British brand is possibly the best I've ever tasted...

I use a Marmite to cook lobsters.
