I seem to remember liking Phffft--it's got a George Axelrod script after all

I tried to be charitable to it in my writeup on Robson in the 50s project, but it really failed for me at being funny or exploring interpersonal systems with the insight he usually brings to his work

I’ll stand with Swo and say it’s pretty funny, but I think I like that set on average more then most.

You're in luck - Phffft! is the 5th Lemmon film coming out 12/8/20.

Blu-rays coming on September 22:
The Bitter Tea of General Yen (Pressed Blu-ray, so hopefully Sony will replace their other burned discs with pressed discs.)
Not sure if it's like this everywhere, but I ordered from Deep Discount and got a pressed disc

Came across this at the end of Svet's review for DIck and laughed pretty hard at the first line
If Dick starred a couple of guys rather than gals in the lead roles, no doubt someone like Pauly Shore would be right there in the lead, or maybe a Rowan Atkinson if one wanted to add a little more weight and class to the movie. Dick cannot match the brain-dead wit and endlessly humorous shenanigans of movies like Clueless and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, two greatly superior films next to this (and pretty great on their own). Dick often feels forced, with the girls gravitating to empty stereotypes rather than carefully developed personalities that could be believably ditzy and at the same time a major part of history.
Can anybody comment on the quality of the commentary?

I listened to it a million years ago, I recall it being good if you're a fan because the director talks about scenes that were cut (that weren't even in the deleted scenes, like a subplot about Checkers being a series of replacement dogs) and apologizes for being forced to include a fart joke. And that is two items of interest more than I can remember from most director commentaries!

One of the strangest ideas I've seen this year is now Dick having been cast with Rowan Atkinson, in his midforties at the time, as a bubbleheaded high school student accidentally breaking open the Watergate story.

I had to reread that sentence when he chose Rowan Atkinson as the person who would best "add a little more weight and class to the movie"

While I won't pretend that I love the movie nearly as much as you (does anybody?) I've always liked it since I saw it as a kid in theatres, and it's only grown in my esteem in adulthood with enhanced comprehension of the satirical elements and appreciation for the humor, which seems to work better each revisit. I rarely make time for commentaries these days, but was particularly intrigued by this one so thanks for the info!

Also, it's tough to keep track of which Sony MOD blus are BD-R only, BD-R-dependent on what site you buy from, and BDs-always.. is Dick the latter (short question: If I buy from Amazon, am I safe)?

I believe that Sony is consistent across retailers. Their releases that are BD-R are BD-R everywhere and their releases that are pressed are pressed everywhere.

I don't know about that, my copy of Welcome to the Dollhouse is a BD-R while other members here I believe reported receiving pressed discs

Weird, you're the first person I've ever heard report they got a BD-R of Welcome to the Dollhouse. Do the case and the actual disc have the Blu-ray logo?

The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (1988) on 2/23/21

For some reason.
