A Song is Born beat Hatari! and Monkey Business so I’m happy.

domino, was your number one Sergeant York? I figured it woulda been one of three others but clearly not the case

It was! It could have just as easily been Air Force most days, but not today

Makes sense, similarly my top five switched up throughout the project and I just hit send with the latest version a couple weeks ago so as not to drive myself crazy. They’re all perfect films and I could’ve picked ‘em out of a hat and been happy with the result.

Thank you! I admit that my numbers two through six could have been shaken up a bit, but I knew that A Song Is Born was going to top my list as soon as I saw it

I very nearly stopped at 12 as well, since everything after Ceiling Zero was on a much different level of quality, but I wanted to give El Dorado its deserved love, and I don’t like odd numbers, so here we are

3. Rio Bravo
4. The Dawn Patrol
5. Bringing Up Baby
6. Red River

9. His Girl Friday
10. Hatari!
11. Scarface
12. The Road to Glory
13. The Criminal Code
14. Sergeant York
15. Monkey Business

I'm assuming 11-15 ranked films were counted. If so, I wonder what (if any) small differences there may have been if only Top 10s were counted. But no matter, this was a fun project! Thanks again, domino.

1.Only Angels Have Wings
2.His Girl Friday

4.I Was a Male War Bride
5.Rio Bravo
6.The Big Sleep
7.Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
8.Ceiling Zero

10.To Have and Have Not

I didn't get to nearly as many as I had hoped I would, but half my list is titles unseen by me before the list, so I call it a success.

Mine:

1 Only Angels Have Wings
2 His Girl Friday
3 Rio Bravo
4 Bringing Up Baby
5 Twentieth Century
6 Ball of Fire
7 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
8 To Have and Have Not
9 Red River
10 I Was A Male War Bride

I've lurked silently on these forums for many years, but always been partial to Hawks and decided to participate a couple of weeks ago. Given the moment in which we live, I found time for quite a few, old and new.

Of first-time viewings, only the maximalist riot of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes made my list. Sergeant York's final hour drains it, there's a great office/city comedy in Man's Favourite Sport? obscured behind the broad jokes of the remainder, and Hatari!....just not for me. Couldn't even get past Wayne's hat.

Air Force was the other new watch that came closest to the top 10.

This project was particularly valuable to me for Only Angels Have Wings. I don't tend to rewatch much nowadays, and only saw this once long ago, but its greatness stood out so much more on this occasion. I was a little more conflicted after returning to Red River - Joanne Dru struggles to pull off her part in that ending. And there wasn't too much talk of I Was A Male War Bride, so I'll put in a word for its tweaking of the screwball blueprint: reliable laughs and it does some really interesting things with structure and narrative.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this thread, it's been great to follow.

12. Rio Bravo

15. The Dawn Patrol

All pretty standard, canonical stuff. After Air Force at number 8, I feel like the remainders are all on a similar plateau of quality.

I'm curious to know if Twentieth Century or Sergeant York were supported by non-American voters. Those are not canonical around here.

I can kinda understand why Sergeant York might be a harder sell for a non-American, but why is Twentieth Century one also?

Personally I’d expect it to be his most accessible film across western-individualistic cultures round the globe. Hams are everywhere.

Without looking for more, I recall that at least one of our non-American voters placed Sgt York near the top

As everybody knows the Hawks-auteur was a French invention, but they didn't say a word about TC, did they? On the other hand, if I remember well, the hand of God was behind... Hatari! :P
