Lloyd's cameo is because he desperately needs the money. A few years back all of his stuff got lost in a fire.

That's very sad to hear. Now you are making me wish there had been more Oogieloves films that Lloyd could have been in!

I think The NeverEnding Story also very much explores your theme of children "wrestling with profound problems of coming to terms with the somewhat flawed and imperfect adult world around them." The young reader, Bastian, has recently lost his mother, and his father is incapable of connecting with him emotionally. Add to that the school bullies who torment him, and there seem to be no adults in sight who take him seriously (aside from the mysterious bookseller). Batian, like Dorothy in one of my favorites Return to Oz, retreats into a fantasy world where children take on the adult responsibilities. In both films, these worlds are on the path to destruction, and it's up to the children to restore them to their former glory, thereby also gaining a sense of control in their problematic real worlds.
The whole thing essentially turns on the idea that the transition from childhood to adulthood mirrors the symbolic structure of the Christian redemption.

Modern fantasy takes its structure from mediaeval Christian romances, where the world falls from an Edenic state into a broken world that can only be returned to its former state by the intercession of a hero who is tested through various tribulations to prove his exceptional qualities. That's certainly the fantasy Bastian finds himself in; but as you say, the fantasy is also a representation of Bastian's struggle to navigate the adult world. He's transitioned from a safe family whole to a broken and uncertain world full of adult pain and sadness that he feels powerless to return to its previous blissful state (the film implies that things will get better, much as in the fantasy, tho' that betterment is contingent and limited). Linking the fantasy with reality through the same structure has the effect of generalizing the whole thing into the idea that the transition from childhood to adulthood is itself a story of a fall from grace: childhood is a state of innocence that we fall from into the real world of pain, sadness, and the burden of responsibility, a world that we have to work heroically to redeem in some way (forging happiness through imagination, the film implies). The ultimate theme is childhood as commedia.

The film also wants to redeem the purported frivolousness of fantasy by showing both fantasy and reality to have the same structure of meaning--to analogize each other, basically.

That's a fascinating take on the subject, Sausage. Thanks for that.

It's interesting that in both The NeverEnding Story and Return to Oz, our young heroes are initially scolded by their parents for believing in fantasies (though Oz takes it quite a few steps further by Aunt Em's attempt to rid Dorothy of her fantasies through electro-shock therapy). NeverEnding concludes with the two worlds merging in a rather harmonious way -- Bastian, who heretofore was not directly involved in the storybook, is pulled in to be its savior, and the luckdragon enters the "real" world to help him in return. Oz is a bit more ambiguous concerning the existence of Dorothy's fantasy world. It may, in fact, be just a dream after all, which to me signifies a great victory for Dorothy in justifying her childhood fantasies.

Ugh. I did mean to participate in this project more, but here are a few last minute defenses from my list.

Clueless
Paltrow is a good actress, but her Emma brings out all her worst qualities, all the obliviousness and haughtiness that defines GOOP. Yet the worst sin is how she always seems to be a woman playing a girl. The role is a tightrope walk between sympathetic naif and obnoxious irritant, and Paltrow's mannered approach turns the character into nails on a chalkboard. Clueless takes the opposite approach, where its always clear that Cher is a kid, and her bad decisions are that much more forgivable.

OC and Stiggs
These may be some of the most insufferable teenagers ever put on film, but doesn't that make them the perfect teenagers? From the not-as-funny-as-they-think inside jokes to the intense-but-shallow obsession with King Sunny Ade and other random touches to the rapid-fire shifts between sarcastic cruelty and vulnerability, these guys feel like teenage kids with all their warts.

I'd only add to the above comments on The NeverEnding Story, Return to Oz and Alice In Wonderland that this also reminds me a lot of the structure of Stephen King's Dark Tower series too.

Okay, fourteen lists in and it's time to play Two Truths and a Lie again!

A. Four of the top five films are Hollywood studio films released within a twelve year span
B. The number one film on our list was named as one of the best films of the year by Cahiers du Cinema
C. Out of fourteen lists, no film appeared on even half of the lists (ie every eligible film received less than seven votes)

I'm thinking B and C are the truths (based on what you've said so far about the lists, C definitely has to be true).

If A is true it must mean Rebel Without a Cause did not make it, or there are way more youth films voted on from the mid-40s to mid 60s than I gleaned from this thread, which seems to lean more modern

Actually when Rebel Without a Cause was released and certainly in the immediate aftermath there was a booming juvenile genre. While they didn't make my list you could certainly make at least five top ten contenders between Youth Runs Wild in '44 and Rebel Without a Cause just eleven years later.

Interesting note: The Wild One from 1953 was banned in the UK until 1968! So instead it was 1955's Blackboard Jungle and its theme tune that caused teddy boy riots instead!

Recent viewings:

Fear Strikes Out (Robert Mulligan 1957) Inexplicably loved by the Cahiers crew (who immediately turned against Mulligan when they hated everything else he did), this is just yet another embarrassing relic of the era’s turn towards self-serious Important Cinema in an effort to compete with television. Anthony Perkins is a good actor but you’d never know it from his utterly in over his head perf here as the young baseball star who must contend with the pressures of having Karl Malden for a father.

In the French Style (Robert Parrish 1962) Jean Seberg is invited back into the Hollywood fold and is cast in what is really two different movies, one about a young love affair and the other about a party girl nearing the end of her run through Paris. The film thankfully only briefly flirts with Nouvelle Vague aping early-on before settling into uninspired Hollywood avenues, capped off with a final act on Seberg’s part that makes no sense based on anything we’ve seen in the film but upholds the morality of the era.

the Manhattan Project (Marshall Brickman 1986) Shameless cashin on WarGames with a charmless protagonist who is so arrogant that he decides to make an atomic bomb and then gets upset when the government has a problem with this. The film is operating on a plane of fantasy that doesn’t lend itself to close scrutiny, I know, but I had a real problem with how the film expected the audience to side with the little shit who makes a functional atomic bomb and not, I don’t know, the government trying to stop him. I did enjoy the implausible but entertaining “heist” sequence in which the kid and his girlfriend Cynthia Nixon manage to steal plutonium from a local facility.

My Life as a Dog (Lasse Hallström 1985) Slight but enjoyable episodic slice of life tale of an obnoxious little boy who gets shipped off to distant relatives and has lots of morally suspect adventures. I’ve seen this movie so many times before and since in countless other films that it doesn’t leave much of an impact, but there’s plenty of charming grace notes to make it entertaining, even if it’s hard to recommend a movie that was so passionately just okay.

I actually rather like Fear Strikes Out though I take at this point I have a bigger tolerance for '50s serious cinema then you do when it is cushioned in a genre fold as in here. It's certainly a highly exaggerated take on bipolar with an overly simplified conclusion, but Perkins sells it really well in a way that makes him as the choice for Norman Bates a big duh. That said it is lumpy enough a film that I won't defend much more then as a top tier Mulligan.

And now I just realized that I missed out on a number one contender for my list, FLCL. Oh well.

The main lesson My Life As A Dog taught me was to never give in to peer pressure and stay away from cola bottles! But for such a relatively narratively slight tale I think My Life As A Dog really captures a period sense of place and time - it at least memorialises Laika the space dog, the fears over Sputnik and Swedish boxer Ingemar Johansson! (I presume that Hallström must be a dog lover as he's recently made Hachi: A Dog's Tale and is apparently making A Dog's Purpose as his next film!)

However I'm a bit more of a fan of Lasse Hallström's contemporary set 'young adult' works. There's actually one of them on the Criterion edition of My Life As A Dog called Shall We Go To My Or Your Place or Each Go Home Alone? I keep expecting one of these days for Criterion or somebody to put out a set of his early works that might lead to a critical rediscovery - A Lover and His Lass, Father To Be and Happy We (ABBA The Movie kind of fits in this company too). They're all wonderful, wryly comic pieces about sex, work, politics, gender and just relationships in general and show a real lightness of touch that feels a bit more muted in the literary adaptations. My Life As A Dog really seems to have been where that shift occurs, or at least began to appear.

This is reminding me though that I completely forgot about What's Eating Gilbert Grape?(!)

The promised one has graced us, as sinemadelisikiz's last minute ballot (lucky number fifteen) managed to rescue an impressive dozen orphans at this late hour, including two number one picks from other members. It's a Christmas miracle! Anyone reading this who hasn't participated yet, you have til I get back from working out in the morning to submit a list. I will post notice in here when no more lists are accepted.

Only one of the three previous clues is still accurate, so here's the last round of pointless teasing with two truths and a lie:

A. The films in the top ten are in the following languages: Bengali, Czech, English, French, Japanese, and Swedish
B. Five of the six slots making up numbers 5-10 on the list are Criterion releases. One is out of print
C. The top three films are all studio pictures from Hollywood. One of the three was considered by Jean Luc Godard to be the director's least good work

CLUES EXPLAINED / ESZTERHASES COMED AGAINED
SpoilerShow
A. Only five of the top ten are Criterion releases, and none of the current top three have been released by Criterion
— True. The top three at this point were Rebel, Los Olvidados, and Curse of the Cat People
B. Three of the top five films are in English, with two being studio-era Hollywood films
—True. See above, the other English-language film was the Fallen Idol
C. None of the top five films are eligible for the All Time List, though every film has at least one other title on that list from the same director
— False. Curse of the Cat People and Rebel Without a Cause were on the list

A. Four of the top five films are Hollywood studio films released within a twelve year span
— True, it was Rebel, Curse…, Shadow of a Doubt, and Night of the Hunter
B. The number one film on our list was named as one of the best films of the year by Cahiers du Cinema
— True, Rebel
C. Out of fourteen lists, no film appeared on even half of the lists (ie every eligible film received less than seven votes)
— False. At this point Rebel and 400 Blows were both on half of the lists

A. The films in the top ten are in the following languages: Bengali, Czech, English, French, Japanese, and Swedish
— False. Spanish instead of Czech and Japanese, though Japanese ended up being correct in the final tally!
B. Five of the six slots making up numbers 5-10 on the list are Criterion releases. One is out of print
— True. I won't list out all six but the OOP one was obv Fallen Idol
C. The top three films are all studio pictures from Hollywood. One of the three was considered by Jean Luc Godard to be the director's least good work
— True, Shadow of a Doubt, which was number three on the list at this point before voting turned against it with the last ballot. The awkward grammar of “least good” is a direct quote from JLG, as he of course still liked it

Great work, Domino. I realized shortly after you closed voting that I forgot Y Tu Mama Tambien and Red Balloon, d'oh.

City of God is listed twice in the orphans, fyi.

Whoops, onto the list proper it goes, but nothing gets bumped off due to the tie at the finish line. And here I thought we'd finally have a list without a tie at the end bringing us over 100!

Great work, dom! I see a few films in the orphans and also-rans (Zéro de Conduite, 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, Welcome to the Dollhouse, The White Dove) that I probably should have voted for, but I'll chalk up their omission to youthful folly.

What were these two films?

Rebel Without a Cause and Fucking Åmål, though it turns out I'd missed the vote for the latter under its English title on one of the lists
