And the Wings Blu will be selling at a laser disc-esq MSRP of $49.95!
Edit: Z is up! . . . and there is still something coming for spine 488 . . .

EDIT: And it's also $49.95!

Loving this (because I love drama). If these prices stick, I wonder how they'll justify it.

I think I just shot myself. But at least Z is there.mfunk9786 wrote:And a Howard's End Blu, which has spine #488.

EDIT: Are they reissuing Howard's End on DVD? If I recall there was actually nothing on the original.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Apparently selling Blu's at the same price point as DVDs wasn't working as a business model. It looks like the hi-def consumers are going to have to subsidize the continued proliferation of hi-def releases . . .

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Yeah, even though James Ivory apparently wanted the Merchant/Ivory collection to be a separate line, apparently mistaking M/I for a more prestigious brand-name than Criterion, I've always looked at it from the other direction: I never wanted Criterion's good name sullied by those damn M/I snoozefests. Oh well, they were gonna do it sooner or later.mfunk9786 wrote:And a Howard's End Blu, which has spine #488.

The films look delightful, though. Stuff like this and the Klein set are what the Eclipse line should be.movielocke wrote:obscure enough?

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Sadly the new $49.95 SRP for Blu-ray releases is too high for me. Few dollars more than a DVD would be understandable but $10 is too much.

Not in the least. I demand proof of true obscurity by the immediate release of a Gorin box set!movielocke wrote:http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/668

Is this the first month in which every release on the main label is a reissue of a film already available on DVD? Shameful.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Hate to be the person who forks over SRP for a Howard's End blu.
"I paid $50 for this?" But really, who pays SRP for anything? Looks like a really boring month outside of the eclipse set.

We've had chances to nab 400 Blows, The Seventh Seal and The Third Man on Blu for $20-30, and they use Howard's End, Monsoon Wedding and Wings of Desire (alright, I enjoy WoD) to roll out the $50 MSRP.

That does kind of suck, but if it's any consolation, Wings and Z have been out of print for a while.Perkins Cobb wrote:Is this the first month in which every release on the main label is a reissue of a film already available on DVD? Shameful.

And they're expensive OOP dvds at that. Especially Wings; the prices it is fetching on Amazon are absurd.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Well I'm happy with this month's releases - I can upgrade my TV recorded VHS of Z, finally recitfy the yawning gap in my knowledge by seeing Wings of Desire for the first time (and no, I haven't seen the Nicholas Cage/Meg Ryan remake, so I'll be a relatively pure viewer to the Wings experience!), and the only film I had of Makavejev before the two Criterion releases from 2007 and this new boxset was Montenegro taken from another BBC screening in the mid 90s, so I've somehow avoided the need for double dipping on any of his films so far!

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
When Criterion first announced that they'd be selling their Blu-rays at the same price as their SD releases, I took it as a tacit confession that they were making money hand over fist with their pricing structure and should have revised it years ago. I guess not. As ridiculous as $50 a disc is, I won't be able to resist Wings, and if they had given the same treatment to Z, I would have got it too.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Dang, all that speculation had me nursing an outside hope of an Eisenstein Silents box....
And no Halloween Cronos....?
Still, the Wings set looks promising. Every time Criterion's presented me with the SD or HD option, I've taken the Blu and have never regretted it. Still, the price hike is there.
I doubt the higher prices are a mistake.
And I suppose it's time I saw Z.
Overall, I'm happy with this month.
