They're moving those 2 titles to the "New Releases" section since it's beung released tomrorow.
The why wasn't a question. It was the when: at ~8PM Eastern, which means, given the above speculation about office hours, an intern must've sat bolt upright mid-Wynona rant, realized they forgot to do something, and run back to the office. Just not to do what we're all waiting for...

It occurs to me that the delay can come from only one thing: nerves. Namely, the jitters that come from being the only company bold enough to announce the American premiere of spine #1000, A Rainy Day in New York.

I'd assume that the power outage the other day is what's led to the delay, but any delay for any reason should have gotten an explanation by now.

Criterions above giving explanations anymore. It’s been years now since they’ve addressed the public on any matter.

The power outage was only in a small part of Manhattan no where near the Criterion offices. And only lasted several hours on a Saturday evening.

There’s no reason they “should” give an explanation. Usually announcements are on the 15th, sometimes they’re late. No big deal.

The best explanation I saw (from facebook) was that Monday (today) is a holiday in Japan, and noone is working at Toho. The theory being, criterion had something last minute they had to clear before announcing the Godzilla set, and couldn't coordinate because of the Holiday.

Or it could be that the Citizen Kane cover wasn’t quite the right shade of pink.

The cartoon of William Randolph Hurst looked too much like Cary Grant

Haxan or the Devil and Daniel Webster would indeed be very far fetched. They are plausible in that they could be upgraded, and both would be releases I happily purchase, but no one is guessing them and there's no reason to think they're coming anytime soon, so him guessing these two of all possible choices is suspicious
Well, Domino, I don't know why they'd be far-fetched; we're talking about the month of Halloween, whose theme has always been ghouls, ghosts and monsters (e.g., Kuroneko, The Uninvited, and others of their ilk arrived in October). Since Criterion launched the channel, I've been suspecting that the releases seem to have more themes and pairings (the way they do on the channel, starting with Columbia Noir). It may be my own personal instinct, but last month confirmed it for me. I balked then at naming three comedies, and Criterion released four. They made it comedy month. So this month I'm picking Godzilla movies and horror/ghost upgrades from the backlog—which are more likely to be upgraded this month than any other.

(And Uncle Jon says to stop picking on me....)

The point is that there have been no previous clues about those particular titles and it's already a statistical impossibility that you are not a mole

Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread

#114 Post by movielocke » Tue Jul 16, 2019 12:09 am

Somewheres back in the distant yesteryear of this thread I guessed haxan for October a couple years in a row based on the same supposition, but it never came to pass, and most years there is no halloweenish title in October.

I’d say “mole” is harsh, more likely one to two Kevin bacons away in vendor/client relationship with criterion in printing or licensing, for example.

Just as a thought, in addition to the 666 links, 999 is the UK equivalent of 911 - so if there are any British films centered on the police / ambulance / fire services on the schedule (especially one where they would have the UK rights too) that might be a possibility.

Criterion actually has been pretty regular about releasing at least one Horror film in October for the last decade.
2018-Sisters
2017-Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me/The Lure
2016-Trilogia del Toro
2015-The Brood/Kwaidan/Mulholland Dr, Vanishing
2014-The Vanishing (but I also assume Eraserhead and The Innocents were pushed up to Sep that year to make room for the Tati box in Oct)
2013-I Married a Witch/Eyes Without a Face/The Uninvited
2012-Rosemary's Baby
2011-Kuroneko/Island of Lost Souls
2010-House

That said, I think the most likely release for 999 would be Bergman's Hour of the Wolf. So...
Beat King Absurdity
Hour of the Wolf
Citizen Kane
Godzilla box (unnumbered, to actually be released in November)

Thanks shrew! Just goes to show since I don’t watch horror I haven’t seen/bought very many of those titles (only seen one or two) I completely didn’t know the pattern was that stable.

With Toho doing a rare appearance at SDCC this week, I think there's a fair chance that even if the other announcements go up today that the Godzilla set won't be announced until that panel.

Upgrade of Hãxan (this would fit with a Halloween horror/witch theme, and even though silents are rare and we've had two this year,
I feel like there'll be at least one more)
Unreal.
