The colors on the Fast Times cover make my eyes hurt. I do like the Nightmare Alley cover and Flowers of Shanghai is great but this is a weak month overall.

I thought about "alcoholic looks" but I don't think it works. They both look uncertain so probably under a spell of malaise, but really he just looks bored (and boring).senseabove wrote: ↑Fri Feb 12, 2021 3:23 pmI guess they were going for March having an alcoholic stupor-induced thousand-yard stare past his beautiful bride, who is reacting with surprise at that stare. But...that's very much a guess.

I quite like four of these, and even Merrily isn't nearly as off-putting to my eye as Cluny Brown or Holiday

I thought a button was made from the Death in Venice cover, but then I realized it was Sean Penn

Céline and Julie Go Boating looks great, especially the interior artwork!

Can't wait to see how WKW revises the packaging for the second pressing.

I like to think the absences of the "C" and wrap-around label are meant to distance the release from Criterion. Maybe the lack of the mission statement is also a subtle reference to the fact this release is terrible?

The mission statement's there on the back, just hidden by the glare.

The wacky C isn't on the cover of the Bergman or Varda collector sets either, but is on the spine. Maybe it's on one of the spines here too (not visible in those pictures)?

The disc art is all wacky-c-styled as well. I doubt Criterion hates this set as much as some board members do ... or, you know, hate it at all.

I know, I know, I'm just joking (not the part about disliking this set, though).
Ah, I meant the "...gathering the greatest films from around the world..." statement, not the introductory one that is at the top.soundchaser wrote: ↑Fri Mar 05, 2021 5:01 pmThe mission statement's there on the back, just hidden by the glare.

This is the first time I’ve ever looked at a disc package and thought “well that’s just insufferable”.
Between that and the transfers, I’m glad I’m not a fan of Wong kar wai.

I can honestly say I'd need to watch an actual unboxing video just to see how the fuck that WKW boxset even "works"

Notice that they've standardized the title, so instead of "A Summer's Tale" or "Autumn Tale," it's all "A Tale of _____."
That made me picture Rohmer shooting the same exact picture four times, but merely changing the time of year as a big f*** you to everyone.

The French titles are all "Conte de ____" so the change makes sense. But the "A ___'s Tale" arguably sounds better in English for everything except Spring, and "A Winter's Tale" was definitely meant to match the Shakespeare play. Oh well.

Also : 4 tales for 5 colors for the brushstrokes.
I too am not a fan of the new English titles. It reads weird and I'm not sure it's a better translation either.

The new 'Pickup on South Street' cover is miles better than the previous one.

Oh sure, the one month we don’t open the guessing thread and they finally do Streetwise and Tiny. I see how it is.
