Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Coming from a neutral arbiter who doesn't participate in the venerable Speculation Rodeo: since domino is the one who unlocks the thread nearly every month (and since it's impossible for soundchaser or Deprong Mori to do so), this seems like an unfair competitive advantage. To make up for it, I think domino should have to write 1000 words on Prince of Tides.

Though I am glad to finally be able to stop guessing some of these titles and appreciate the title and symbol in memory of my fellow statesman Will Rogers, I am always going to decline any award I win on the board anyways, so soundchaser can have it, though he’ll forever know that he’s just the Jack Lemmon to my Ving Rhames

Being nominated for an Oscar eight times wouldn't be so bad.domino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 7:06 pmThough I am glad to finally be able to stop guessing some of these titles and appreciate the title and symbol in memory of my fellow statesman Will Rogers, I am always going to decline any award I win on the board anyways, so soundchaser can have it, though he’ll forever know that he’s just the Jack Lemmon to my Ving Rhames
(In all seriousness, I'm just happy I can finally stop guessing Salesman.)

Well then folks, due to outrage at the judge's decision + a declined aware, the new All-Around Cowpoke is fitfully

Technically, one could just post everything on the forthcoming list and get the month's correct answers in there somewhere.

Anyone find the brilliant irony in Criterion releasing Bamboozled and Showboat in the same month

Given the New Year’s clues, I was expecting them to release Bamboozled and Swing Time in the same month.FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 7:57 pmAnyone find the brilliant irony in Criterion releasing Bamboozled and Showboat in the same month

I know someone that worked on In Fabric, and they confirmed last night that it's coming to the collection. It also explains Peter Strickland in the closet and they're post about it playing in NY on Instagram.

Isn't 'In Fabric' being distributed by A24? Does this mean that there is a deal between Criterion and A24?

Is it too early to speculate on the possible 4k Fellini restorations? I'm guessing Amarcord will be newly restored, La Dolce Vita will stick with the resto that is used on the standalone criterion and 8 1/2 is a sure bet.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Amarcord got a 4K restoration in 2015 so that should be a no-brainer. The existing Satyricon release is already from a 4K master so they'll just reuse that. If Criterion strikes a deal with Canal, there are 4K versions of The White Sheik and Nights of Cabiria ready for the taking. The BFI claims the January screenings of Casanova at the National Film Theatre are 4K, which is a surprise if true—this was restored a few years back, but I can't find any confirmation whether it was done in 2K or 4K, and if it were in 4K you'd think that would've been mentioned before.

There's also an existing restoration of 8 1/2 from the OCN that was only ever released by Mustang Entertainment in Italy. It was done in 2K, but it's still easily the best the film has ever looked -- much better than the Criterion and Gaumont blu-rays.

This might have some info both about restorations and which ones Criterion has already gotten the rights to: https://bampfa.org/program/federico-fellini-100
They only typically add "Digital Restoration" to the listing if that's something worth noting as a recent restoration. It's not there just for all DCPs.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I've been thinking more about this. While I agree to a certain extent, the studio heads thought the films they made were disposable due to no way to re-show them, along with the lack of foresight of sustainability for the old nitrate film. So making remakes was the obvious way to go.domino harvey wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2019 4:15 pmThis is how Hollywood worked ~80 years ago: release the remake, bury the original (keep in mind the 1932 Jekyll & Hyde was once thought lost because MGM destroyed every copy when they released the 1940s version). Absolutely horrifying prospect, especially given the vastness and richness of the Fox studio era catalog

I must be missing something. There is a thread about the new year's clue (already locked just a few hours later) but I have been unable to find the drawing. Quite frustrating!

Blu-ray.com is reporting that Mean Streets has gone out-of-print. I suspect that means a Criterion is coming soon?

It will be interesting to see if Criterion pairs it with his early docs.

Didn't Mean Streets go OOP in 2017? I remember it being listed as one of the 2nd round Warner titles that went OOP.

January 20 is Fellini's 100th birthday. Will Criterion make their Fellini box set announcement on that day? It's a Monday and a holiday (MLK).

Probably won't hear anything if it's a holiday. I think Fellini might get the Nov-Dec treatment.Close The Door, Raymond wrote:January 20 is Fellini's 100th birthday. Will Criterion make their Fellini box set announcement on that day? It's a Monday and a holiday (MLK).
