Not saying you're wrong about Etaix, but the hat in the drawing resembles the Basque txapela (on the right below) more than the one in your photo

Gotta be a mime. He's doing the leaning on an imaginary wall thing.
In which case it's "A Night in Casablanca", of all things.

Oh, and there's a car pile up in "Nashville" (another bit of wishful thinking).

The bow could be for the Korean film “The Bow” by Kim Ki-duk. Criterion released their first Korean film last Aug. He's an amazing director who has won numerous awards at Cannes in Un Certain Regard but not a lot of attention elsewhere.

Triodelover - see my post a couple of pages back - hat is a 'Tricorne', 3 pointed - ingrained and apparent in Spanish & French culture especially & mainly 17/18th centuries, legacy as you show...

I don't think Criterion should release any films by Ki-duk Kim.

From what I'm seeing, the bow in The Bow doesn't have that distinctive outwards bump in the middle, while the one in the Pasolini does. I would also guess that the mime is probably Pierre Étaix, as we know for certain that set is coming.

Etaix - this is still a scattergunned conclusion, there is enough in the clue to suggest specificity...

If that medallion is a reference to Rosemary's Baby as well as Harold and Maude that is the cleverest thing I've seen in these drawings for the past few years. So awesome. Also the girl on top of the car made me think of Crash, even though you guys have shown screenshots. The Truck hauling the cars could also be reference to crash. They've got that great Cronenberg commentary just sitting there. The Samurai Trilogy deserves an upgrade totally. It's about time.

After looking at the picture some more, I now can't help but feel as though those lines represent something. They just seem to be too precisely placed. While it would be nice to get a decent package of The Five Obstructions, I don't feel as though that's correct. (MAYBE.) Still, these past drawings have recently been rather dense, and this detail isn't to be overlooked. (That Lean/Coward hint has me paranoid!!)

.... By the by, if you happen to own a (new) copy of Breaking the Waves or The Five Obstructions, you could make a pretty penny.

I know the marionette is for Being John Malkovich but I was hoping it would be a double clue for From the life of the marionettes? a very underrated/great effort from Bergman

For all our talk of them, Criterion has never had a double clue, have they?

I think mfunk is asking both if double clues exist and also, who here likes hot dogs.

First day of the new thread, and 5 pages!! Not bad, mates.... Now that the picture's done with, we might as well talk about the correlation between hot dogs and double clues.... and government conspiracies....

Isn't there something with a motorcycle or a military convoy at the start of Col. Blimp? I might be thinking of Lawrence of Arabia..

One of the vehicles could be a blu 'Taste of Cherry', although one has to draw the line somewhere re: films with cars in them. Still no Rivettes, Rublev, Rossellinis..

I zoomed in on the pendant using Photoshop' magnification tool (set to 50x) and applied the digital filter to clarify and lo and behold, it appears we were all on the wrong track:

You are not the Criterions you buy. You are not the titles you demand be upgraded. You are not your new high-definition digital restoration. You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

Wow... Criterion's come to expect a lot from us with these teasers.... I'd magnify some more, because The Shawshank Redemption might be in there, and we want our friends over at IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes to be happy, too.

some kooky possibilities I've not seen suggested

The five lines divide the clues up into what kind of releases they are hinting at, for example in the bottom left quadrant we have clues for box sets, Pierre Etaix, Wenders, and the pearls clearly refer to a trio release, perhaps the pearls are referring to a trilogy of murnau films, City Girl, Tabu, and Sunrise, for example. :-p

Of course this suggests that Eating Raoul is part of a box set, so the whole theory is probably crap, unless someone can figure out what sort of boxset (maybe BBS esque) the film would be part of.

Couldn't the lines just be their lame attempt at showing the traffic moving?

Could be but the one going right through (behind) the 1 samurai has me questioning they could be lines from the traffic.
