According to both Shout/Scream Factory's Cliff MacMillan and Kino Insider, Paramount still own the US rights to Four Flies. It would not be the first time an Italian company licensed out a film in the US eben though they did not actually have the US rights. Severin is likely aware of this, and decided that a Black Friday exclusive might prevent another Cruel Jaws situation.

They likely will be selling copies of this for years at conventions/shows. (Pretty sure they are still selling Cruel Jaws at shows.)

Severin'a latest boxset (streeting at the end of March)
VIOLENT STREETS: THE UMBERTO LENZI/TOMAS MILIAN COLLECTION [9-DISC BLU-RAY BOX SET
Disc 1: ALMOST HUMAN (1974)

Released in Italy under the title MILANO ODIA: LA POLIZIA NON-PUÒ SPARARE (MILAN HATES: THE POLICE CAN’T SHOOT), this first collaboration between director Umberto Lenzi and star Tomas Milian remains both “a degenerate treat” (Mondo Digital) and “definitive Eurocrime” (DVD Talk): When a small-time criminal (a fearless performance by Milian) kidnaps a wealthy industrialist’s daughter, he’ll trigger a depraved spree of class warfare, sexual violence, mass murder and the rage of a police commissioner (Henry Silva) determined to end the carnage. Anita Strindberg (YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM…) and Ray Lovelock (LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN) co-star in “one of the peaks of the genre” (Indiewire) written by Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) with a classic score by Ennio Morricone, now scanned uncut from the original negative.

In their second collaboration – released in Italy as IL GIUSTIZIERE SFIDA LA CITTÀ (THE VIGILANTE CHALLENGES THE CITY) – Tomas Milian stars as a biker named Rambo (the actor borrowed the name from David Morrell’s 1972 novel First Blood) who avenges a friend’s murder by orchestrating a war between rival crime families. Director Umberto Lenzi and screenwriter Vincenzo Mannino (HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK) pack the running time with a barrage of beatings, shootings, kidnappings and chases that raised the bar for ‘70s EuroCrime and “put modern action flicks to shame” (DVD Drive-In). Luciano Catenacci (KILL, BABY… KILL!), Femi Benussi (BLOODY PIT OF HORROR) and Joseph Cotten (CITIZEN KANE) co-star in this “non-stop exciting thriller” (European Trash Cinema) – also released as ONE JUST MAN and RAMBO’S REVENGE – now scanned uncut from the original negative.

Following THE TOUGH ONES, this fourth collaboration between director Umberto Lenzi and star Tomas Milian – released as IL TRUCIDO E LO SPIRRO (THE CROOK AND THE COP) – introduced Milian’s iconic character of ‘Monnezza’ and served as the unacknowledged template for 48 HOURS: When a scheming convict (Milian) is sprung from prison by a hard-nosed cop (Claudio Cassinelli of WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?), they’ll team up to hunt down Monnezza’s former crime partner (Henry Silva) who’s kidnapped a critically ill child. Robert Hundar (CUT-THROATS NINE), Nicoletta Machiavelli (NO WAY OUT) and a murderer’s row of EuroCrime’s most recognizable character actors co-star in this “classic politziottesco packed full of fun action” (Starburst) co-written by Lenzi and Dardano Sacchetti (THE BEYOND), now scanned in 2K from the original negative.

Disc 8: BROTHERS TILL WE DIE (1978)

For their final collaboration, Umberto Lenzi directs his own razor-sharp screenplay while Tomas Milian delivers a brilliant dual performance reprising the roles of scheming lowlife Sergio ‘Er Monnezza’ Marazzi from FREE HAND FOR A TOUGH COP as well as his twin brother, hunchbacked sociopath Vincenzo ‘Il Gobbo’ Marazzi from THE TOUGH ONES. With Milian providing his own characters’ dialogue, it’s a potent odyssey of trans prostitutes, armed robberies, double crosses, randy Albanians, angry cops, insane asylums and some of the most startling pathos and politics in the history of the genre. Isa Danieli (SWEPT AWAY), Guido Leontini (EMERGENCY SQUAD) and Solvi Stubing (STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER) co-star in the long-unseen Lenzi/Milian swansong, now scanned uncut in 2K from the original negative.

That’s a phenomenal announcement. A couple of those films have turned up before in disappointing editions, over in the U.K. . Hoping for consistently high picture quality - although it would really be something if they could match Grindhouse’s peerless edition of The Tough Ones. A film that overcame my scepticism of Lenzi being a major director, and got me interested in the poliziotteschi genre, which I now prefer to all other Italian genres.

'We’re starting the year with a bang, namely VIOLENT STREETS — THE UMBERTO LENZI/TOMAS MILIAN COLLECTION. It’s the first of at least 5 new curated box sets we’ll be bringing over the next 12 months, including one dedicated to a legendary actor, a few to unique sub-genres, and barring any further source, production and/or legal hurdles, the ultimate BLACK EMANUELLE Box. In between there’ll be more Blu Premieres, never-before-available genre classics, rarities and restorations, several UHD upgrades, new titles from the Franco, Argento, Fulci, Deodato and Martino canons, and as always a plethora of Mid-Year and Black Friday exclusives. Danza Macabra Vol. One: The Italian Gothic Collection [4-Disc Blu-ray Box Set]:
Disc 1: THE MONSTER OF THE OPERA (1964)
Conceived as a sequel to their landmark THE VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA, director Renato Polselli (THE REINCARNATION OF ISABEL, DELIRIUM) and screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK, LIBIDO) resurrected their gothic-fiend-stalks-a-theatrical-troupe framework for an over-the-top aria of reincarnated lovers, sheer nightgowns, sapphic hunger, interdimensional damnation and frenzied ‘opera’ that “looks like the fever dream of an oversexed choreographer” (Fantastic Movie Musings). Marco Mariani (TOMB OF TORTURE), Giuseppe Addobbati (NIGHTMARE CASTLE) and Milena Vukotic (BLOOD FOR DRACULA) star in this surreal and still potently erotic shocker now scanned in 2K from the original negative, featuring an all-new interview with Gastaldi and more.

Disc 2: THE SEVENTH GRAVE (1965)
For more than 50 years, it has existed only via rumor, reputation and barely watchable bootlegs. It remains perhaps the strangest Italian Gothic ever made: The sole feature by enigmatic director Garibaldi Serra Caracciolo – here using the anglicized pseudonym ‘Finney Cliff’ – combines familiar murder mystery elements of THE CAT AND THE CANARY with odd dollops of mad doctors, escaped lepers, giallo-style killings and one of the most strikingly original séance sequences in the entire genre. Antonio Casale (‘Bill Carson’ in THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY), Ferruccio Viotti (SEX OF THE WITCH) and Gianni Dei (PATRICK STILL LIVES) star in this fascinating rarity now scanned in 2K from the recently discovered negative, with all-new Special Features that explore the bizarre circumstances behind the film’s production, release and half-century disappearance.

Special Features:
Audio Commentary With Rachael Nisbet, Film Critic And Co-Host Of Fragments Of Fear
Seven Graves And A Mystery – Interview With Film Historian Fabio Melelli

Aspect ratio: 1.66:1

Run time: 77 mins

Disc 3: SCREAM OF THE DEMON LOVER (1970)
Though he made only two horror films, veteran writer/director José Luis Merino (THE HANGING WOMAN) here embraces the genre’s classic elements and ravishes them to vivid extremes: When a beautiful biochemist (Erna Schurer of STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER) arrives at a foreboding castle to work for a sinister baron, she’ll unlock a nightmare of dark romance, sexual violence, grisly family secrets and some of the most perverse moments in ‘70s Gothic. Carlos Quiney (ZORRO THE INVINCIBLE), Agostina Belli (BLUEBEARD) and Enzo Fisichella (MALABIMBA) co-star in this Italian/Spanish co-production – also known as KILLERS OF THE CASTLE OF BLOOD and released in the U.S. by New World Pictures cut by nearly 20 minutes – now scanned in 4K from the negative for the first time ever.

In order to discourage US customers from importing the 88 Films UHDs, Severin posted the following
To avoid marketplace confusion we wanted to let our North American customers know that in addition to all the new titles we're dropping in 2023, we are working on UHD upgrades of many of our more popular catalogue titles like HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK, BURIAL GROUND, ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST aka DR. BUTCHER M.D. and more. New 4k scans from negatives, HDR Dolby Vision color correction and additional special features. Announcements will hit when the extensive work is done on the new masters.

Pod People is the one that became one of the best Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffed 'bad movies' (where they really fixated on the way that the cute kid central character is just picking up a whole menagerie of pets and then drops them all without any by or leave once the more interesting alien comes along!) which has an alien with the now rather unfortunate name of "Trumpy". And is the source of the "It stinks" meme.

It does not particularly note it in the write up of the Comic Strip presents collection but presumably that is going to include The Strike, which is a retelling of the Coal Miner's Strike against Margaret Thatcher's government closing the pits, but as retold as if done as a Hollywood biopic where "Al Pacino" is playing (unhistorically accurate in being portrayed as a charismatic rebel, but that's the joke) Union leader Arthur Scargill and "Meryl Streep" in the thankless love interest role. In its placing of impersonators of celebrities being put into incongruous situations you can really tell that this was made by the same people who would go on to make the Stella Street series for the BBC in the late 90s.

The first episode and the '74 special (about 85 minutes combined) were shot on film, so those could be in HD. Everything else they mention was SD PAL. My guess is the SD-sourced material (which amounts to around 21 hours) will be in 480p. 576p would obviously be preferable, but there are too many BD players and TVs in the U.S. that don't support it, and with only two discs they can't possibly upscale it all to HD.
Blind bought Tales to Keep You Awake and, while only two episodes in, would caution anyone excited about visual quality. This is happy-to-have-it unrestored stuff that may just be using the blu-ray format to squeeze everything on to two discs. It is fuzzy. The first episode is very Alfred Hitchcock Presents. The second ("The Hand") is just an uncredited Spanish dub of Harlan Ellison's legendary "Demon with a Glass Hand" Outer Limits episode. Serrador promises in first ep introduction (these have run long, but amusing, thus far) that they'd be importing foreign content to cover any internal production delays, so I'm wondering if there are more of these surprises to come. ("Demon" is of course available in better quality in Outer Limits sets and I'm curious what (if any) agreement Kino and Severin have as to its inclusion here.)

Never even heard of these films - I'll try sampling the first, but are the various spinoffs any good? Sounds like they morph into entire different genres and whatnot, but I really have no idea what to expect of these... Walerian Borowczyk as grindhouse exploitation cinema?

some of the films in that set are not part of the emanuelle filmography and some just have gemser in a completely different role.

black deep throat for example is utterly unwatchable. its nothing more than ajita wilson walking around a town and listening to other people's sexcapades while she herself occasionally indulges in a romp-around. maybe that would be itself amusing if it wasn't entirely filmed in medium close up which means you literally only ever get to see only so much of anything (including location). amore libero, sister emanuelle, emanuelle in the country, black velvet, emanuelle in prison, violence in a woman's prison, violent outbursts etc are not related to the emanuelle films and mostly crap.

one i'd recommend is emanuelle and the white slave trade as this is not just a perfect prelude to the events of emanuelle around the world, but it's probably one of the better ones that's never had a true quality upgrade.

not sure about the game or that toy.

I happened to watch the Code Red Blu-ray of Black Cobra for the first time just a couple months ago, solely on the recommendation of Lars Nilsen's capsule review for the Alamo Drafthouse's "Weird Wednesday" series. I can't speak to the other Black Emanuelle films* but this one struck me as being fairly dull run-of-the-mill 70s sexploitation fare, enlivened by one mildly shocking death scene near the end, a predictably creepy performance by Jack Palance, and some cool shots of 1970s Hong Kong. Under different viewing conditions or with a midnight-movie crowd it might have been more fun, perhaps? Lots of protracted sequences in which Laura Gemser dances topless with a snake, so if boobs, snakesploitation, and/or Asian-themed psychotronic cinema are your thing, you might get something out of this. Personally I decided it was something I was glad to have watched once but don't really have any interest in revisiting.

*(note spelling difference from the unrelated rival series of soft-core "Emmanuelle" films)

YouTuber The Cinema Snob has highlighted some of these on his channel over the years and I’ve seen enough to be curious but not curious enough to spring for all that extra tat. If they ever offer a set with just the discs at a lower price I might spring for it.

But, you know, it’s a lot of Joe D’amato and Bruno Mattei. Lowered expectations are doubtlessly your friend here.

It could be worse, as they could have included the non-Black Emanuelle team ups between Joe D'Amato and Laura Gemser with the paired hardcore sex-and-horror films Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Porno Holocaust!

I probably would not recommend these films to you twbb for anything like plot. They're more pretexts for sex scenes. But the most notorious one is Emanuelle In America, which is the one that uses the standard flimsy plot of Emanuelle doing a job du jour of being an investigative photographer but casually throws in hardcore, bestiality (with a lady pleasuring by hand a horse named Pedro) and has one of the more eye-popping climaxes as Emanuelle finds out about the snuff film scene and we get a couple of minutes of silent, faux-damaged footage of people being tortured which is extremely like the final sequence of Pasolini's Salo but hits all the harder coming at the end of an obviously meant to be titillating sex film. I seem to recall hearing somewhere a mention that apparently Cronenberg was influenced a bit by it for the grainy torture footage in Videodrome, although that may just be an apocryphal statement, as it certainly does not get namechecked in any of the extra features on any Videodrome disc!

Here's the (very NFSW) trailer from the Blue Underground DVD release back in the mid 2000s.
