Re: Imprint
I think it’d be an excellent Criterion release, and certainly in their socially conscious wheelhouse given where the narrative goes

You may very well be right — I’ve never actually seen it myself!

Re: Imprint
I'm sure Eureka would be up for more Kirk Douglas (Ace in the Hole, Paths of Glory, The Vikings), and there are definitely at least a few Paramount titles they are after they couldn't get in 2019, so this will definitely be on their radar (I'm surprised they haven't done a single Wyler film actually).

Re: Imprint
For me, Strangers When We Meet is the great missing Kirk, but I imagine that’ll come from Indicator if anywhere.

Re: Imprint
Yes but one has already come out from Indicator and people have wondered if that means no Quine box, so my intention was not to dismiss the noirs but leave room for Pushover to come out in the next noir box and then get a Quine box separately. Basically I'm not giving up hope due to some Quines categorically fitting in the noir sets.

Re: Imprint
Hard to think of a less essential collection of noir movies than this. The City That Never Sleeps is okay but available from Olive already in the states. Hollywood Story is a piece of shit and Private Hell 36 is as boring as its title is cool. Haven't seen Plunder of the Sun but can't imagine any movie being able to counterbalance this lineup to earn the collection's title of "Essential"Essential Noir vol. 2 (Hollywood Story, The City That Never Sleeps, Plunder of the Sun, Private Hell 36)

It’s not. It’s an okay film that’s enjoyable enough for the time it is playing and nothing more.

Re: Imprint
I'm also baffled that they would release an Indicator title which is region free and likely packed with far more supplements than Imprint will offer. If they're tailoring their brand to Aussies who happen to only collect from companies on the homefront, I guess that's a reason, but I speculate that this isn't a solid market or the kind of marketing decisions that will make for a lasting label

Re: Imprint
Not sure which title you’re referring to, but if it’s The Chalk Garden, it’s Region B.
Although since Australia is also Region B, it doesn’t matter.

Re: Imprint
It also seems highly likely that Imprint would have licensed the rights to The Chalk Garden before they were ever aware of an impending Indicator release.

Re: Imprint
Oh, very much so - and I gather it's extremely expensive to import Indicator titles to Australia, so I doubt very much that they considered it an issue.
(Incidentally, I'm very happy to confirm that the current specs on Indicator's The Chalk Garden are substantially understated - I suspect all will be revealed next week.)

Re: Imprint
Yeah I meant The Chalk Garden and I knew they were the same region, so yeah my bad, wasn't thinking on Indicator's specifics as integral to the statement. That's a good point about the licensing. I don't think those in charge at Imprint are ignorant about their competition, and bringing in commentaries on seemingly every release does give them some novel edge, but it also seems like their label's success is going to be largely contingent on coming out first on a lot of these acquisitions before other labels get to them, so in cases where Indicator announces a release first, I'm not sure how that'll impact the label. I could easily be misjudging the internal market in Australia.

Re: Imprint
To Imprint's credit, they're churning out Paramount titles that no UK label has so far managed to get hold of, and fair enough. I just hope a label like Indicator, Eureka or BFI will be able to get titles like The Duellists, A Place in the Sun, The Gambler and Black Sunday one day and give them the proper go-through (and goes without saying, but the same goes for Hard Eight, The War of the Worlds, Danger: Diabolik, and Alfie). Talking of titles that aren't Paramount, I'm intrigued that we haven't seen Major Dundee given the bells-and-whistles treatment it was given both in the US and Australia (I heard Roger Deakins mention it on his podcast recently). Waterloo just went to Mediumrare which is...interesting.
(Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what Michael is referring to in regards to The Chalk Garden disc from Indicator; and it's obvious by now they're also the label to look to for those with an appetite for Film Noir).

Re: Imprint
Kat Ellinger has just confirmed on the Twitter that she did the commentary for the Imprint The Chalk Garden and a video essay for Alfie.

Re: Imprint
During sales, indicators are cheaper to import than buying Imprint titles. On regular prices, it's more of a wash.MichaelB wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 3:52 pmOh, very much so - and I gather it's extremely expensive to import Indicator titles to Australia, so I doubt very much that they considered it an issue.

Plus when you live in a country where buying any home video releases that are worth spending money on usually means importing, "expensive" becomes a little more relative.

This no longer mentions a new transfer. It does however sport what is surely the same Eddie Muller commentary. So much for the exclusivity of the Imprint box, yet again!domino harvey wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 8:24 pmAlias Nick Beal coming from Kino Lorber with apparently a newer transfer
