Domino probably meant Letter from an Unknown Woman, which is in fact a Republic title. It was announced a couple of years ago by Paramount with a few other Republic titles, but since then it has disappear into oblivion.

Right, but we got this newsletter kinda early. Hopefully they'll announce it next month.

In the meantime here's a rundown of possible titles:

Certainties/Janus

Possibilities

If these are certainties, I don't see much room for more. In fact, I would almost be surprised to see all five of these. But who knows, maybe it will include Letter and Lola and we'll have an unprecedented seven-film box set.

does Criterion ever release boxed sets with titles licensed from different sources? I mean if they licensed Letter from, let's say Studio Canal(?), and the contract somehow ran out, they'd need to repackage all the Janus titles together (because those are pretty much permanent licenses).

edit: Also, I could see Criterion releasing something like 'the last films of Max Ophüls (La Ronde, Le Plaisir, Madam De..., Lola Montès) or 'the early European films of Max Ophüls' (any number of his numerous early European films)... but I couldn't really see them doing one that mixed and matched (unless they go the Cassavetes route)

Not trying to be a jerk, but genuinely asking - why would Signora and Liebelei be certainties? They're Janus controlled in the US?

I don't know if Lola Montes will be in or out, but I'll bet they tried like heck either way. Spine #12 in the laserdisc catalog, I think its been a point of pride for them to rerelease their key lasers (and most of the not so key lasers) wherever humanly possible.

Well, the Eclipse line certainly does. For example, the Early Kurosawa set had films from both Toho and Shochiku, while the Late Ozu set had films from both these companies and Daiei (now Kadokawa) as well.

It's completely unprecedented but I wonder if Criterion would consider a Volume I and II in this instance, assuming of course they have the ability to release those seven? It's just not commercially viable to release a seven film box on the main line and there's no way they'd put Ophuls on Eclipse.

Also I third the Rivette sentiment.

Release the three most high-profile films on Criterion, with tons of extras in the box set. Release the rest as an Eclipse box set.

This makes sense. Also, given the reputation of Earrings, I would be surprised if weren't available as a standalone.
