I LOVE the duller palette on the new Criterion. Cropping doesn't bother me really if at all.

What is the take on the remix? Is it faithful to the mono track?

Someone on the blu forums emailed Criterion regarding the cropping, and this is what they had to say:
We set up the framing using a SMPTE framing chart for 35mm and 1.85 (attached). While it appeared that the older transfer was zoomed out slightly less, our version is 100% accurate to the chart.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that director Amy Heckerling had not been involved in any aspect of the older transfer but did approve this framing, color, and all other elements of the Criterion release.

Overall, the difference is minor and the range of any discrepancies is similar to what you might see in a theater screening.

Sounds like a rock solid response.

According to the geniuses over on Reddit, this restoration is "embarrassing".

That sub is divided between people who think that any deviation from a previous DVD, laserdisc, or TV broadcast master is suspect, and those who think Criterion can do no wrong and are comfortable dismissing all criticism of something like the WKW box. As often happens on Reddit, both sides get upvoted, giving the whole conversation a weird split-personality look.

Baffling that someone who works for Vinegar Syndrome (of all the boutiques) and has Projectionist in his Twitter bio seemingly doesn't grasp that a release that shows slightly more image info than another isn't necessarily correct.

Regarding the colour though that first commenter is right that a lot of remasters that are done in the HDR realm these days and then converted to SDR for a BD release, often have "off" looking tones. It may very well be the case that a future Universal UHD will strike a more nuanced pallete.

The only thing "embarrassing" is people still believing that DVDBeaver take accurate screencaps.
