Janus has added playdates. If you can, I totally recommend seeing this on a big screen. It is absolutely stunning.

Thanks for this! If I hadn't seen your post I would have missed the LA run!

+1. I looked this weekend to see when Chicago was going to be on the docket, and was just coming here to say how strange it was that the Music Box hadn't picked it up yet. I guess now I know what I'm doing on Friday night!

Saw a trailer for Ray's Apu Trilogy before thescreening of the latest (last) Studio Ghibli film -- judging by this the restoration is utterly stunning, far better than that of Music Room (which seemed amazing at the time).

Having seen the first two on the big screen, you would never, ever guess the elements were in the shape as described in the restoration footage. It's phenomenal.

I've understood good chunks of the movies had to be sourced from inferior elements. Does this mean even this doesn't show on the screen ? I have mixed memories about the Quai des brumes restoration, which was heavily sourced from inferior sources (away by 1 or 2 generations from the OCN, IIRC), and it was quite obvious unfortunately.

I expected such a variation of PQ on the Apu restorations. If it's not the case, that's marvelous.

Pather Panchali looked superb throughout. There were certainly some more damaged moments, more lines and other problems with Aparajito, but aside from maybe 20 minutes or so of the film, it too looked marvelous.

I would say that you can tell at certain points, but really very few. It's honestly incredible how great these films look, given everything they've been through. And even without the story, they just look great.

Apu Trilogy poster is now on sale from Criterion.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say this will likely be the DVD/Blu cover as well.

I don't mind. Actually, you can put right next to your 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman set, if you have it. It will feel like Vol.I and Vol.II from a distance

The product page was actually already up at least a month ago. I don't recall however exactly when I saw it first.

Amazon sent me an email this morning notifying that Apu Trilogy was up for pre-sale. No date. So not only a page but notifying customers as well.

There's an article in the newest issue of American Cinematographer (the one with Penny Dreadful on the cover) that discusses the restoration of the Apu films in some detail, with quotes from Peter Becker and others.

I imagine that this is a title people have been requesting since Amazon began, so whatever pre-announcement info Amazon received probably set all their algorithms a-tingling.

A local theatre has each film in The Apu Trilogy (with the titling "The Apu Trilogy:" before each film) listed but it isn't anywhere on the Janus Films page for the play dates. Does this mean they will be projecting it digitally instead of using film?

The 4k restoration that is touring is only DCP. There are no new prints touring.

Prices on box sets went up with dual format and never came down. I expected apu to be 125 like les blank or wcp, so I'm pleased it's the same as the Wallace Shawn box

I think at most the ::kogonada extra will be an extended version of this: https://www.criterion.com/current/posts ... pu-trilogy" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also considering the cost that went into the restorations, perhaps?
