How recommendations are built
The goal of this tool is to help both new and seasoned cinephiles discover films in The Criterion Collection based on their own interests, while also encouraging them to explore beyond familiar favorites.
The directors, films, genres, movements, languages, countries, and other preferences you select are used to build a starting point for your recommendations. At least one director is required, but everything else is optional and helps shape the results.
From there, the tool looks for connections across film history, including shared styles and themes, cinematic movements, influences, related filmmakers, and other artistic connections. These are used together to find Criterion releases that fit your interests with the goal to not simply give you more of what you already know.
Finally, your Comfort Zone and other preference settings help determine how closely the results stay to familiar territory. Safer settings lean toward films that more closely match your selections, while more adventurous settings give the system more room to make broader, less obvious connections.
Things worth knowing
- At least one director is required. Everything else is optional.
- Every recommendation has a release from The Criterion Collection. Unless you choose otherwise, this can include Out-of-Print titles.
- Selecting a director who is not represented in the Collection is perfectly fine; the system can still find Criterion films connected through that filmmaker's style, themes, influences, and other relationships.
- Selecting a director who already has releases in the Collection does not guarantee their films will be recommended. The system assumes you are already familiar with their work and considers a variety of other factors when making its selections.
- Comfort Zone settings influence how films are ranked, but they are not hard filters. A film will not be excluded simply because it falls above or below one of your settings.
- Some recommendations may feel obvious, while others are intended to nudge you toward films you may not have considered on your own but could still be a good fit.
- If a director is unavailable, it simply means they have not yet been fully mapped in the system (it's not a slight against the filmmaker). We are continuing to add more, and you'll also have an opportunity to suggest a missing director while searching.
