It is a testament to Phoenix’s talent that I have any intention of seeing a Joker film. Still think this will end up as successful as his Jesus, but like that one I can’t not see for myself

What if this is the film that finally gets Phoenix his ridiculously overdue Oscar?

Wouldn't be far fetched with these superhero/comic book films becoming more accepted for award season

Just curious, are there any other examples where two actors/actresses won for the same character?

Heath Ledger won his way before the wider acceptation of superhero movies for awards. I guess this would make for the bigger part of the rationale here.

De Niro and Brando for Vito Corleone in The Godfather 1 & 2, though De Niro was Supporting. It seems to be the only time this happened.

Interesting to see Chaplin in there too as a reference. Looks fascinating!

I'm torn on the idea of this. Because it's a stand-alone I expect it to be more uninhibited because it won't worry itself with building a world that gets eventually becomes explored or exploited in sequels. But that's also going to lead me naturally to thinking how Batman fits into all of this, maybe to the point of distraction.

It looks... bad. Maybe it's just the trailer but tonally it's all over the map. Perhaps the movie will be better.

I have paid no attention to this so far but the trailer has me intrigued and Phoenix is always worth watching. It looks more like a psychological horror film along the lines of The Machinist than a superhero movie. I’m in.

Honestly, I'm just glad this doesn't look like complete shit visually - it's neither horribly over-CGed nor desaturated like the rest of DC's post-Nolan movies. This is the most optimistic I've been for a superhero movie in a while.

I've seen this comparison before, but never realised how, by comparison, the original footage looks like UHD screenshots, but with no HDR-to-SDR conversion applied.

If this didn't have any connection to existing intellectual property it would be my most anticipated film of the year, so I suppose I ought to just give in and enjoy the lobotomy that these comic book monoliths want to eventually figure out a way to give me. It looks absolutely great.

Lawrence Sher must have spent some quality time watching The Master around 100 times before they got started on this one.

If nothing else, this might push a lot of comic-book-movie only viewers to explore some of the obvious influences here, which wouldn't be a bad thing.

It does really look like the incel movie of the century. I can't wait for the t-shirts and tattoos and Facebook profile pictures that are going to come out of this.

That's why you shouldn't go onto the Internet. Ruins everything.

I would hope so, but in practice, I doubt it will be the case.

Considering it’s Todd Phillips, it doesn’t look like complete shit. The way they show his body is interesting. If anything Zazie Beetz might get me to see this in a theater...

Aw Christ, you're right - whether it's good or bad, can't wait for this to be the next Clockwork Orange/Fight Club/American Psycho/Dark Knight (funnily enough) in terms of insufferable people liking it. Hopefully the script or Phillips or even Phoenix can push the titular character into such moral hideousness that there's no way he can be idolized.

Definitely got the Taxi Driver vibe, which, along with the look, has me intrigued. But I agree with mfunk it does look like the type of thing (based solely on the trailer) the Incels will latch onto for all of the wrong reasons.

What mfunk and cdnchris said. I'm intrigued and am going to see it, mainly for Phoenix, but worried what the douchebag crowd is going to project onto it.
