Ah yes, should be 11.27 at midnight. Thanks!
Does that mean the start or the end of the 27th? (I'm guessing the latter, but don't want to miss out if I'm wrong.)

Thanks. While I have your ear, can I ask if there are any plans to put out Academy of Muses at some point?

Not at the moment. It’s VOD only. But we’ll be announcing new bluray/dvd releases next year.

Will do! It’s actually great to see all the continued interest for bluray. Makes it easier for us to make the decision to release more titles this way.

I hope that continued interest in the Blu-ray format does lead to certain VOD titles getting their own releases.

That’s our hope with each release. At the same time, we’re also really liking the ability to make somewhat more obscure titles available, even if it’s VOD only via our site.

But we’re also looking to continue putting out BD releases of both new and classic / underlooked titles.

Anyone receive their copy of Moses und Aron yet? Amazon's saying it's not in stock, I had to opt-in to keeping my pre-order live.

The DVD is in stock everywhere but the blu hasn't been seen. I emailed Amazon and grasshopper. Amazon say they'll look into it (ha ha) and I don't expect a reply from Hopper. Perhaps the blus were all faulty since they were never delivered to any etailers. If I'm wrong please enlighten me someone

Hi all,

There was a printing issue with the UPC code on the blu-ray of MOSES AND AARON. This is the cause of the problem with Amazon and other retailers. But its only the blu-ray, which is why the DVDs are shown as in stock everywhere.

We're working with Amazon (and other retailers) to correct this. They have all the stock already; they just need to reflect this in their inventories. Hopefully this will be resolved quickly.

But if anyone is interested, you can order blu-rays directly from our site at any time.

Thanks. Any questions, just let us know.

Thanks for the response! I'm tempted to switch my order to direct, but I'm locked in at $22.99 on Amazon so will probably just wait it out ;)

Got my blu ray of MOSES yesterday. So far I have only watched the shorts. Both transfers are from recent Franco-Swiss restorations and look quite good. The only fault I can find is with the subtitles on NOT RECONCILED. Many sentences and in some instances: whole chunks of dialogue; are left untranslated. I’m sure this is not a fault and is quite deliberately done but the logic behind the lack of translated dialogue baffles me. Fortunately I have the screenplay of the film (from Roud’s book) and can decipher what is being said. Don’t worry: the essential dialogue is presented.

Is this a coincidence but the translator of CLASS RELATIONS did the same annoying thing to another Straub classic thereby marring the (non-German) viewer’s ‘complete’ enjoyment of that film also.

This is a minor gripe. I’m grateful to Grasshopper for putting these important early works out on blu ray but an explanation of the translator’s reasons would be interesting to read.

If this is like that then this is at the director's wishes.

You are correct knives. I clicked on the subtitle button and some text came up explaining the reason why parts are left untranslated. It is at the request of Hulliett (who also oversaw the subs to CLASS RELATIONS). Whilst I am not prepared to criticise her reasons I cannot ever accept the result. In summary she states that words must not take precedence over sound and image. What she fails to take into account is the off/on function at the viewer’s fingertips. Many people I know like to watch foreign films a few times with subs to get the gist and then without to enjoy the visuals as they should be. Rather than annoy English viewers with partial subs, wouldn't it better to supply the printed text and have no subs at all? (btw the French subs on CLASS RELATIONS are fully translated: why?)

S&H's wishes for minimalist subtitles are well established. At least they're more generous than Peter Kubelka. You are always free to learn these other languages.

Sometimes a director's wishes should be ignored. No one was upset when Kino supplemented the Navajo subs with actual ones for Film Socialisme

Did the previous Region 1 DVD (New Yorker?) translate all subtitles or only some based on S&H guidelines?

I'm pretty sure this was referring to NOT RECONCILED, which is only now getting released for the first time with English subtitles. The New Yorker release of MOSES UND ARON only had the short "Einleitung zu Arnold Schoenbergs Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspielsscene" as a supplement. MOSES AND ARON has normal subtitles, from what I have watched.

Yes, the Grasshopper Films release uses the intentionally "abbreviated" subtitles for NOT RECONCILED, but don't let that deter you. The subtitles give you enough to follow what is going on, and what they do translate is faithful enough. If you understand any German at all, it's pretty easy to pick up on what was not translated.

In this case I understand why Huillet and Straub chose this approach--the film has very rapid narration, and it would not be possible to translate everything without really straining the viewer. They evidently wanted to make it clear that you are not getting everything, and also to watch & listen closely and not just "read" the film. It's not at all the same thing as Godard's "Navajo" subtitles for FILM SOCIALISME. (I know that Domino Harvey was not claiming that they're the same.) They are normal subtitles, just purposefully selective about what they translate. You can reasonably debate whether they're adequate, but I think they're fine. I bought the Blu-ray specifically to get NOT RECONCILED, and I'm more than happy with it.
