And I gather this is a substantially better master than the one that fuelled the old Clavis disc.

Re: Forthcoming: Silence and Cry
This is fantastic news!
True story - several years ago I sold a DVD of Silence and Cry to the late Carrie Fisher on the Amazon Marketplace. I always wondered what she thought of the film, but you don't go buying a DVD of Silence and Cry without having a serious interest in cinema as an art form. I'll think of her when I watch the Blu-ray, and wish she were here to enjoy it with us.

I think that's probably better than any of the posts in the actual "I sold this thing to that guy" thread!jsteffe wrote:This is fantastic news!

Correct. JELENLET (THE PRESENCE) 3 films about the Jewish experience in Hungary are on the Dreamsquest DVD. Incidentally I am an unfortunate possessor of this poorly transferred Canadian version of SILENCE AND CRY. The image is interlaced and non-anamorphic and the subs keep sticking so an upgrade is welcome. (I am aware of better DVDs released in Europe later.)

Re: 120 / BD 10 Silence and Cry
The three Jelenlét films are presented in HD for the first time, so specs have been updated to read:
'World premiere HD presentation of Miklós Jancsó’s renowned but rarely-seen documentary trilogy of short films.'

See also The Junk Shop on The Cremator - this previously appeared on the Czech DVD of Pearls of the Deep, but in standard definition and unsubtitled, so to all practical intents and purposes Second Run’s English-friendly HD version was a video premiere.

Drool. Looks much more natural than Electra. (Although I did laugh at Zavitz claiming that the image "has some minor incontinency"; I assume he meant "inconsistency".)Bikey wrote:Beaver
Out of curiosity - does anyone have a list of which Jancsos MaNDA has the rights to? I know it's got to be most of his early stuff.

MaNDA’s The Red and the White (completely English-friendly) is probably the best purchase I’ve ever done and my most treasured DVD. Two-disc set with great extras and an alternate Russian-language version of the film is included as well.

Re: 120 / BD 10 Silence and Cry
If I remember rightly, it’s not actually in Russian, but it is a fascinating demonstration of the futility of trying to re-edit a Jancsó film to create something that the Soviets thought they were funding but which he signally failed to deliver. As for the nudity, they simply hacked it out, regardless of whether it came in the middle of an elaborate six-minute take.L.A. wrote:MaNDA’s The Red and the White (completely English-friendly) is probably the best purchase I’ve ever done and my most treasured DVD. (UPDATE: I clearly don't remember rightly, as it is in Russian, but unless you're showing it to people who don't understand English or Hungarian, its main point of interest is the editorial mangling rather than the language! Which is presumably why I completely forgot what language it was in in the first place.)

Electra as well. I sold the Hungarian DVD because I upgraded it to the Second Run BD but if I recall only one of the extras on the MaNDA disc had English subs.MichaelB wrote:They’ve released The Round-Up and The Red and the White on DVD.

I’m willing to bet it’s OOP. It came out in late 2011.whaleallright wrote:Where/how can one purchase this to send to the US?L.A. wrote:MaNDA’s The Red and the White (completely English-friendly) is probably the best purchase I’ve ever done and my most treasured DVD.
