While I am guilty as well of wanting something more significant to happen, the fact that every episode has two or three "holy shit!" moments in additional to being consistently entertaining means I should probably do away with any remaining preconceptions and take what the show is offering. After all, where else am I going to get...
SpoilerShow
...Harry Dean Stanton getting a moment of pathos unlike anything he's had an opportunity to do in a couple of decades, that lovely moment where Cooper/Dougie ponders the image of the young Bushnell Mullins in the boxing poster with the elderly man in front of him (the passage of time being so crucial to this revival), or that horrific/hilarious psychotronic ice pick murder spree?

We even got our first glimpse at the never-before-seen "Diane", imbibing at a bar named after yet another character from Sunset Boulevard.

I just wanted to say that as someone not in a position to watch the new season as yet, I'm finding these comments after each episode very entertaining! And I'm trying to build up a picture of the show just from them, which might be resulting in an even weirder image of what is going on!

I met Kyle a week or so ago at a wine tasting and asked him to record a video for my mom (a Twin Peaks/wine fan). At the end of it, I couldn't help but do this.

I'm totally pleased with this season; I feel like I'm being spoiled. I already prefer it by several orders of magnitude to the first show, which I thought was horribly uneven even in its lauded first season. Here while I can understand--in a detached sort of way--the hopes that more will start to happen-happen, for myself I've enjoyed every minute of this. And the Dougie scenes in particular, which are catching flack all over, are a standout. Lynch's love of Tati is well known--and he's included references to Mon Oncle in his other works--but this is the first time I can think of that Lynch has had an out-and-out "holy fool" of a physical comedy character along the lines of Hulot or The Tramp. Not only does Lynch have the eye for detailed performance that such a mode requires, but it also exemplifies his lifelong preoccupation: innocence and corruption. The end of episode 5, with Dougie's idle vagrancy soundtracked by that Johnny Jewel saxophone sample... each episode feels more and more like this series will be one of Lynch's greatest, most personal works.

What I kept thinking of watching Dougie in this latest episode, was the unproduced Dream of the Bovine, an absurdist comedy Lynch worked on some time after the original show, about three guys who used to be cows. I always wanted to see that, and wouldn't be suprised is some of the situtations Dougie finds himself in stems from this script. Highly speculative, of course...

She's the exact kind of person who watched the original show who would dislike the new series (I don't think she's seen the film either). I'm going to wait until the new series is over and I know if the long game worth it for her, what with all of the graphic violence that's bound to put her off, before I let her watch any of it. The tables, they turn.

At least it's not about the porn industry.

One of the more fascinating additions to the show is the deputy, Chad - time will tell, I suppose, but he seems to have been crafted to reflect a certain recognizable kind of unfeeling, nihilistic young man of this era, the sort of person for whom everything is worthy of bilious criticism and cruelty masquerading as "truth-telling" "sarcasm." Maybe I'm reading way too much into him, and the now elderly Lynch's sense of the pulse of this sort of cultural shift, but having a truly awful young man working in the sincere and sweet Twin Peaks sheriff's department is jarring and I would imagine it's not an accident that Chad is there. Perhaps serving as a Wayne Knight-in-Jurassic Park ineffectual villain type thorn in the side of Hawk throughout the process of trying to rescue Agent Cooper, perhaps serving a much higher purpose for Lynch to comment on modern society, perhaps neither.

I definitely sense it as a reflection on the worst qualities of the modern generation. Also, setting him up as the one guy who just doesn't get the austere truth of Margaret's proclamations and developing him as

a crooked cop working alongside Richard Horne (who, terrifying as he was in Part 5, manages to really be the little fish when put against Balthazar Getty's Red), gives me the impression that Chad may very well end up caught in the crossfire of the infighting druglords and the stalwart (I hope/assume) Deputy Bob Briggs and team and meet a satisfying demise.

I agree with you both, and I think we have a lot of reason to believe Lynch is sensitive to these sorts of changes in the behavioral atmosphere. In a way it's very easy to see Lynch as an unworldly, apolitical sort of monkish outlaw (something he invites if you look at the "politics" section of his wikipedia article) but by no means is he the head-in-the-sand sensibility some seem to assume. In this video around 1:11:00 he gives his thoughts, for example, on political correctness--comments that are really interesting in light of the "fix your hearts or die" exchange a few episodes ago. To me this indicates that he is attentive to and struggles with what's going on more broadly in the world today, showing that his films are not just the nostalgic solipsistic fantasies some accuse them of being.

Just to clarify, it's not that I don't think he's capable any longer of being able to be observant of cultural shifts, just that I wondered aloud (though less so after your convincing argument) how much he's exposed to these sorts of things, being a beloved artist and Famous Person who can be selective about the sorts of people he surrounds himself with. That said, it was probably too dismissive on my part to question how plugged in he's capable of being (and always has been).

It's clear from some notices that some consider that he is not very plugged in at all and never has been, at least when it comes to social justice issues. This has been a big debate since Blue Velvet, surely, and isn't likely to find easy resolution anytime soon.

Something like his classic iPhone "ad", serve to show that, though he can be resistant to changes that he deems large downgrades (with just cause), he's got a pretty good handle on what fascinates and drives each new batch of humans.

Something interesting for me is how, at least so far, this isn't as interested in portraying the young people of the show as high-schoolers as was done previously. All of the younger characters (besides, of course the very youngest, Dougie's son) are clearly in their early-mid 20's.

Not quite as good as episode 5, let alone 3 but still a strong episode (easily better than 4, this season's low point so far for me, and low point being relative in relation to the rest of Season 3).

The graphic murder of the woman by the dwarf assailant was gratuitous I thought (though the screwdriver was a nice nod to Inland Empire) and the reaction of the onlookers in the hit and run diminished said scene a little bit in its impact. Phenomenal performance by Stanton however, and it was wonderful to hear a new Badalamenti composition (though probably not the first, I thought the cue underscoring Dougie's tear in Episode 5 may have been a new track as well). Anyone else picking up on Carl's fellow passenger mentioning Linda?

Heidi featuring in the RR is a nice but of circularity referring back to the pilot and episode 29. I think Heidi was the one eye witness of Richard Horne running over the kid, so I expect her to feature in the episodes ahead.

Not much longer now until Coop fully recovers, surely. Two, three episodes..? As much as I like DougieCoop, I'm not sure I could stomach them running with this until, say, the penultimate episode.

Wondering too if the Lilliard storyline from Episode 1 & 2 will get picked up again as well.

As brief (and as speculated upon) as it was, I'm surprised to see no mention of
SpoilerShow
Laura Dern's Diane!
, not to mention Albert's hilarious "fuck Gene Kelly!" as he approached the bar.

This week's certainly wasn't my favorite hour spent with the new season, but I accepted pretty early on that it would be foolish to jump to any conclusions on how to feel about a Lynch project 1/3 of the way through. It's not perfect, but it doesn't need to be, and I get the sense that everyone (still) watching come the end of July will have entirely different feelings about the show than they do now.

Actually, the eyewitness was the young school teacher ("Miriam Sullivan") that Heidi was talking to at the RR.

I'd go a step further and say that the pacing and comedic conceit of Dougie is cribbed directly from Hulot, specifically Mon Oncle and Playtime. The other touchpoint must be Fanny and Alexander, another long-form meloncholy family reunion for TV filled with dread, horror, and magic, that is a distillition of Bergmans work. I wonder if that means we're heading for a happy ending?

Things are moving quickly now, however, it does continue to feel quite fragmented and shaggier than much of Lynch's more focused work. And I am officially done with the tone of the Dougie Jones plotline - it was so amusing in the early going, but if I see one more scene with Naomi Watts raising her voice at a comatose Kyle MacLachlan it'll officially be one too many. That said, the conclusion of this week's Dougie segment seems to indicate that the stakes are getting much higher, and fast.

Also, how good was Laura Dern? It felt like we were able to fill in so much of the texture of Agent Cooper's world both before and after he was possessed by Bob just through her performance, and the minimal information that we were able to ascertain about Diane and Cooper's professional and personal history.

I really loved this one.
It could be called "The Info-dump Episode", but Lynch still managed to maintain a perfect balance with the moody, meditative shots (like the floor cleaning) and the deeply weird stuff (like the guest appearance of The Evolution of the Arm).
I nearly cheered when Lynch/Cole started whistling the theme from Amarcord. The title means "I remember" and, as he couldn't get the end bit right, he was effectively trying to remember "I remember".

I did not pick up on this! Thanks.

Certainly the quickest pacing of any episode...which makes me wonder if the interminable floor-sweeping shot was included only as a self-referential gag ("see, we can pace this thing much slower if we want to"). For me, adding Naomi Watts to the Dougie Jones routine has extended its appeal, but I'll be fine to have the real Cooper back soon.

I loved the floor-sweeping, if just to focus on how awesome "Green Onions" is.

I foresaw the confrontation with the little hitman, thinking that Cooper's FBI training would kick in. Maybe to the point that it triggers him back to life. Maybe what happens is is that news of it reaches Twin Peaks, Hawk sees it and goes to Vegas.

So are we to believe that Frank and Harry are brothers? I thought going in for some reason they were father and son.

I feel pretty certain that the news coverage of the attack will seen by the FBI or the Twin Peaks police force. Frank is definitely Harry S. Truman's brother (he even calls him "brother" during the phone conversation). Robert Forster, after all, is only five years older than Michael Ontkean and was Lynch's original choice to play Sheriff Truman back in '89 (other commitments prevented Forster from accepting the role).

The pile of cigarettes and the little paper on the floor reminded me of the hill of dirt with the Fire Walk With me note left behind by Leland on top.

Heavy on exposition but a great deal to love in this episode (still not a patch on Episode 3 though): Doctor Hayward telling Truman that he thought Coop went to see Audrey has some disturbing implications (Richard Horne the result of Bad Cooper raping Audrey in her comatose state?), equally disturbing Diane's meeting with Bad Coop in the prison (great verbal reference to FWWM: Who are you? Who are you really?), and the man from the Buckhorn cell walking down the corridor..

Laugh out loud funny, especially if you can't stand Chrysta Bell's acting, "Fuck off Tammy"

Great chemistry between Beymer and Judd; got to be Josie humming in the walls of the Great Northern.

Dougie facing down and disarming Ike the Spike significantly raised the stakes; surely a Peaks resident or the FBI will see Dougie's media coverage.

And what's up with Andy's Rolex? Where did he get that from?
