I doubt, since Warner Archive release is still in print. They usually go out-of-print well in advance of the Criterion release, like Akira Kurosawa's Dreams or Blow Up

Could the waving T arm be one of the versions of A Farewell to Arms?

Re: New Years Drawing 2017
It could be the Borzage film. I don't think that Kino "officially" licensed their version from Universal; who would be the rightsholder had the film not fallen into the public domain. We did recently see Criterion release The Front Page even though Kino has their own public domain release of it. Though to be fair it was a different cut of the film.

If you assigned 1,000 people to come up with a clue for A Farewell to Arms, how many of them would come up with two letters from the alphabet waving at each other?

Re: New Years Drawing 2017
Really? The bride with flowers and elephant-foot shoulders still seems pretty unsolved to me. Same with the alcohol bottle and the four pans on the wall. And the second Puerto Rican/Cuban flag. And the window. Lots of guesses, but nothing that seems clearcut.domino harvey wrote:But right now, as far as I'm concerned, the only unsolved clue is the waving T, and you would just put one of those hats on someone to make it the Seuss film, so no way it's that
It's worth noting that the hand on the R conspicuously has the thumb folded in, which is an odd detail for a hand wave, but that could just be a red herring (as could the extra line on one of the flags).

I don't see why the two Cuban flags refer to both Soy Cuba and Buena Vista. We know the Wenders is a sure thing, and didn't Milestone say there exist a new HD master of Soy Cuba?

Re: New Years Drawing 2017
Soy Cuba definitely coming from Milestone, I'd say if we're expecting another title besides Buena Vista Social Club, it might be Memories of Underdevelopment which is a WCP film if memory serves.

I would expect to see a clue for "Until the End of the World too" but there isn't any.
Well, I guess it would be difficult to make up a clue for that.

2015 New Years Clue didn't have any already announced films drawn. The first New Years clue to be released was in April - an upgrade of The River.movielocke wrote:@minkin in the 2015 and 2016 New Years clues, how many clues were for respective January-march releases?
With the march 2017 release of blow up, I'm wondering if these clues are now structured for April-march schedule rather than January to December schedule, and we didn't notice the shift?
2016 had a few already announced films: The Kid, Bicycle Thieves upgrade, probably Manchurian Candidate.
2016 seemed more like a standout though, as there's usually no already announced films in the New Years clue. The only other time I can think of was the first drawing - which had several.

Re: New Years Drawing 2017
And depending on whether or not you thought last year's clue included Blowup---I guessed it at the time, but it now seems like a stretch regardless of its announcement, Criterion blazed through their clues by September with the announcement of the Exterminating Angel upgrade. So it's possible Criterion wishes to confine its clue to films they can guarantee are coming within the calendar year after 2015's clue for 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days yielded nothing within the year (or years, they can bundle the last three Mungiu's at this point and call it "A Romanian Success at Cannes!" or something). Dielman, Dheepan, Mysterious Object, Buena Vista, Stalker, Pagnol...all safe bets.

Yes, but when has a clue being solved ever stopped this board?

Well, there's no harm done in offering alternates.domino harvey wrote:Yes, but when has a clue being solved ever stopped this board?
Who decides when a clue has been really solved?
When in a New Year's Drawing there was that clue with a fisherman who fishes an eye, people said Jellyfish Eyes (because the eye resembled something from that movie - don't remember what).
I didn't know that movie, so one thing that came to my mind was One-Eyed Jacks that fit too.

It was forgotten afterwards (after it was dismissed by most people as being a stretch), and everybody was stuck with Jellyfish Eyes which of course was released, but so was One-Eyed Jacks!

Re: New Years Drawing 2017
well this forum has what about 100 active members, and someone came up with it out of the 50ish people who have posted in this thread so I'd say from a limited non representative sample that between 10-20 people of a larger population would come up with that.swo17 wrote:If you assigned 1,000 people to come up with a clue for A Farewell to Arms, how many of them would come up with two letters from the alphabet waving at each other?

You have misunderstood Swo. He's asking how many people would design that clue for that film.

Re: New Years Drawing 2017
I asked the opposite question--not how many people would guess that movie from the drawing that we have, but how many would think to make that drawing as a clue for the movie?movielocke wrote:well this forum has what about 100 active members, and someone came up with it out of the 50ish people who have posted in this thread so I'd say from a limited non representative sample that between 10-20 people of a larger population would come up with that.swo17 wrote:If you assigned 1,000 people to come up with a clue for A Farewell to Arms, how many of them would come up with two letters from the alphabet waving at each other?
For comparison, if I told you to draw a clue for Mysterious Object at Noon, what else might you come up with besides a mystery box and a clock?
EDIT: Sorry, didn't see TMDaines's post.

Ha, I suppose there are all sorts of mysterious objects in these drawings. They should have put the drawing out at exactly noon for that to be the clue.

Stalker and They live by night is my dream come true. Stalker release in UK and Japan have both problems, and Nick Ray movies in blu ray release are so neglected so far.
