85 Birds, Orphans and Fools

#1 Post by MichaelB » Tue Sep 03, 2013 6:29 am

Juraj Jakubisko's 1969 film confirmed as an upcoming Second Run DVD in their latest newsletter, as part of their Slovak collection.

More details when I get them.

I wonder if Jakubisko's earlier film CHRISTS YEAR'S / PRIME OF LIFE (a film remastered for the Slovak Institute box set) will also be slated for a SR release.

Superb! That's one of their best in ages, and it sums up the film as well as any single image can.

"Filled with dazzling, hallucinatory images but suppressed until the Velvet Revolution unlocked the vaults, this is another extraordinary rediscovery of Slovak cinema"

I'm getting excited about this one! The Slovakian disc is non-anamorphic, so the upgrade will probably be quite worth it. this movie left quite an impression on me both times I have watched it.

"Instantly sweeps the audience along with a liberated camera that plunges joyfully into the film’s carnivalesque world... Invites comparison with French New Wave masterpieces: its ménage à trois recalls Truffaut’s Jules and Jim (1962), but its stylistic virtuosity and affinity for youth culture makes it closer in spirit to Godard’s Breathless (1960). Jakubisko has a talent all his own when it comes to integrating the contemporary hippie zeitgeist into the traditional Slovak countryside"

That's good to know. I hadn't bothered with this new edition since I still had the unwatched Slovak disc, but that changes things!

There is currently a 14 minute edit of highlights from DESERTERS AND NOMADS on YouTube. It looks like restored high def from TV. The colours are breathtaking. Just search under "zbehovia a putnici." Has this been restored?
