It's a great documentary (of a great performance piece). The US and UK releases are DVD only, but I saw it on HBO in HD. Shame, because I would have bought a Blu-ray.

It's a very good film for both the lay person and those who might happen to know a bit more about the art world, performance art or her work in particular. An overview of her career framed around the big MOMA show and her centerpiece performance. DVD only for now in the U.S. via Music Box Films; Netflix and Glamazon have it. I saw an HD file from HBO on my DVR.

thanks..looking forward to checking out the dvd..she was genuinely nice to me and considering how extreme some her art is i'm not sure i was expecting her to be.i don't have anything negative to say about her.amazing artist too...wish i was around for some of her earlier pieces-the one where she took amphetamines and whipped herself-literally- into a frenzy then took thorazine to counteract the speed and passing out cold.doing "donuts" in a parking lot for 12 hours straight or the creme de la creme of all performance art-walking the entirety of the great wall of china, meeting her boyfriend in the middle (who had walked there from the opposite end) only to break up and never to see each other again...

This year was the most difficult I’ve ever had to pick ten favorite films, let alone to rank them one to ten. 2012 was, on balance, an excellent year, but I wouldn’t call any of its movies “masterpieces.” I confess that it was down to the wire for me in choosing a “best film,” and I’d prefer to have gone with both Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln.
The annotations in the articles are worth a look.

The Academy's documentary shortlist is out:

5 Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi)
Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (Alison Klayman)
Bully (Lee Hirsch)
Chasing Ice (Jeff Orlowski)
Detropia (Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady)
Ethel (Rory Kennedy)
The Gatekeepers (Dror Moreh)
The House I Live In (Eugene Jarecki)
How to Survive a Plague (David France)
The Imposter (Bart Layton)
The Invisible War (Kirby Dick)
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (Alex Gibney)
Searching for Sugar Man (Malik Bendjelloul)
This Is Not a Film (Mojtaba Mirtahmasb and Jafar Panahi)
The Waiting Room (Peter Nicks)

Surprised (in a good way) that This Is Not a Film is up for something -- it shouldn't be necessary to point out Iran didn't submit it for the foreign-language category...

That's a surprisingly good list of films. Panahi won't win, but I hope it makes the short short list.

Definitely a strong list. Several fine films in there. I'm surprised, though, that Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present and The Central Park Five got left out considering their relative popularity. Does anybody know if they were, by any chance, previously deemed ineligible?

I would love to see Ann Dowd nominated for an Oscar, but I doubt enough Academy members will even want to sit through the film.

Nice to see Bradley Cooper isn't being left out of the awards. Saw Silver Linings Playbook again over the weekend and he deserves more credit than what's been given to him.

Perhaps a more knowledgeable (or less lazy than myself) Oscar aficionado can clarify this for me: would wins for Kathryn Bigelow or Tom Hooper as best director mark the first time a filmmaker would win the prize for consecutive movies in their filmography? How about directing consecutive best picture winners in their filmography?

I know John Ford and Joe Mankiewicz both won best director two years in a row, but each man had other films released in between their award-winning projects.

David Lean won Best Director for consecutive films: The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, both of which also won Best Picture.

William Wyler sort of did, depending on whether or not you count the wartime documentary short Memphis Belle, which is the only thing he did between Mrs. Miniver and The Best Years of Our Lives.

I kind of wish that Sam Jackson was getting anything since his performance in Django Unchained is probably his best in over a decade.
