Director Pedro Costa will be in next week for two very special screenings of his films at London's ICA Cinema:
Sunday 30th September, 6pm CASA DE LAVA - with introduction by Pedro Costa followed by Q&A hosted by Edinburgh International Film Festival's artistic director Chris Fujiwara;
Tuesday 2nd October, 6:15pm NE CHANGE RIEN - with introduction by Pedro Costa followed by Q&A hosted by journalist and film critic David Jenkins.

Please don't miss this chance to see these films on the big screen - and to meet one of cinema's most important talents!

Just got back from the ICA's CASA DE LAVA screening tonight. A near sell-out, so a big thanks to all who came.
Our DVD looked AMAZING on screen at the ICA - and topped off with a hugely enjoyable Q&A with Pedro and Chris Fujiwara afterwards.

Can't wait for NE CHANGE RIEN on Tuesday!

A handy by-product of Sight & Sound's redesign is that DVD capsule reviews are now much longer - 400 words and up.

(Aside from my Oedipus Rex review in the current issue, which was written specifically to fill a 310-word gap - but even that's a fair bit longer than the 200-odd words they used to commission).

Pierrevon Kleist Editions are an artist run publisher operating out of Lisbon, Portugal. They've reproduced Pedro Costa's Casa de Lava scrapbook in full color - and included an exclusive interview with Costa by Nuno Crespo and a text by Philippe Azoury (both in Portuguese, English and French). It's a beautiful thing. Pre order here

London-based Pedro Costa fans are in for a treat in early January with a week of events and screenings with the man himself!:

Sunday 5th January 2014 at 3pm - BFI Southbank Centro historico + Discussion with Víctor Erice and Pedro Costa

Pedro Costa – Masterclass : Work, Language, the Actor
Three Public Lectures - Monday 6th; Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th January 2014, 2.00pm-5.00pm
Birkbeck Cinema, 43 Gordon Square, London, WC1H 0PD

Pedro Costa returns for a three session masterclass at Birkbeck, University of London. Costa will introduce three key, but to a large extent under-discussed aspects of his work as a film director: ‘Work’, ‘Language’ and ‘Actor’. Film theorists Laura Mulvey (Birkbeck), Ros Gray (Goldsmiths) and John Kraniauskas (Birkbeck) will act as discussants in each of the sessions.
These events are free but booking is essential.

Thursday 9th January - ICA Cinema, 6.30 - 9pm (exact time TBC) Where Does Your Hidden Smile Lie? (Où gît votre sourire enfoui? / Pedro Costa, 2001)

There will also be a book launch event during this period. Pierre von Kleist, the publisher of the CASA DE LAVA notebook are organizing a book launch / conversation with Pedro - details TBC.

Hi everyone,

Speaking of Pedro Costa and Casa de Lava, did you know about the book CASA DE LAVA-CADERNO? I just got my copy... A really amazing facsimile of the scrapbook book that Costa made while shooting in Cape Verde.. full of newspaper clippings and images..And it come with a booklet that includes a long interview with him.

Really worthwhile..

Here is the publisher's website: http://www.pierrevonkleist.com/product/ ... va-caderno" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks zpc.
Yes we know the Pierre von Kliest edition of the CASA DE LAVA notebook - a very beautiful object indeed.
(Pages from Pedro's original scrapbook are available to view as an extra on our own CASA DE LAVA DVD release).

The book launch event we mentioned is indeed for this very CASA DE LAVA notebook - Pierre von Kliest Editions are launching the book in the UK with an event with Pedro Costa (date, time and venue yet to be confirmed - but will be during that week of 6th January 2014).

Delighted to see Pedro Costa's wonderful Cavalo Dinheiro rated at #3 on Sight & Sound's 'Best Films of 2014' poll.
