Sad news. I've always had a soft spot for the Monkees' music.

I'll always remember him for this impressive dance sequence from HEAD.

Conservative media gadfly and talking head in The Undefeated, Andrew Brietbart. It should also be noted that his "Big..." empire started out with his "Big Hollywood" site, an attempt to make over the film and television industries into a more conservative friendly environment.

One of my conservative friends has already passively alleged foul play because of those videos of Obama in college that Breitbart claimed to have a couple of weeks ago.

Not to play Devil's advocate, but it is quite the coincidence.

It's not hard to guess someone's politics from this one-liner:
We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

The family's lawyer already called it natural causes. Also, the guy was long rumored to have had a heavy alcohol addiction and, as anyone who has ever seen him on television can attest, clearly had an anger problem that caused his flabby frame to turn very flushed. I suspect that whatever did him in is very likely related to those issues.

I know next to nothing about him (sans his last appearance on Real Time, where he told John Waters he was a huge fan which is relatively surprising).

Wow, this is a huge loss for the Right. A former college classmate actually writes for his sites and she isn't crying foul play, and that's about all she ever does, so I wouldn't worry about this going down the conspiratorial martyr route yet

I would imagine his major league cocaine use didn't help either.

I hate to speak ill of the dead or to engage in the same politics of destruction that Mr. Breitbart specialized in, but I fail to see how this isn't a huge gain for public discourse. The man made his living off of obfuscation, smearing, and outright lying. He never met a truth that he wouldn't twist or a lie that he wouldn't spread. Let's not forget that his sites propagated the heavily edited ACORN tapes, which led to the downfall of a much needed institution. He created an alternate reality on his websites which allow the benighted to stay in their cozy vacuums and never explore alternate viewpoints. And he perpetrated some of the most vicious, vile, and racist personal attacks in the past few years (think Shirley Sherrod, John Lewis, etc.). I hate to say it, but Alec Baldwin's assessment of his as "a festering boil on the anus of public discourse" seems spot on.

'Death of a douche' by Matt Taibbi.

It's actually a very fair-minded send-off.

A bit late in noting but... actress and fashion designer Elyse Knox Harmon, NCIS star Mark Harmon's mother, and former mother-in-law of Ricky Nelson, passed away on Wednesday, February 15. She was 94.

I have to say, as a very even-headed conspiracy theory nerd (who just likes to watch them develop but never buys into them), this whole March 1st Obama tapes Breitbart one is a lot of fun.

They're still getting released, apparently, and by the guy who did The Undefeated -- eugh

Ralph McQuarrie, the artist perhaps most responsible for the look of Star Wars, etc.
