La Notte is something I gave up hope on a long time ago

I agree, it would be fun to shake up the IFC and MGM titles a bit next month (as good as the latter, especially, have been). Personally, I'm still holding out hope for Rocco and His Brothers, but I may finally just break down and order the damn MOC, along with La Notte.

What would be cool is if they have the Wenders road trilogy ready to go next January. It will have been a year since Paris, Texas.

James L. Brooks has How Do You Know with Jack Nicholson opening in December so I imagine we'll get Broadcast News.

Would love to see Topsy-Turvy (or any Mike Leigh for that matter).

I thought the same thing regarding Inception and Following, but that never materialized. Maybe a few months later when How Do You Know hits DVD/BD?

Criterion discs will sell or not sell irrespective of their concomitant release with new film projects involving the same filmmakers or stars on the discs. I doubt that the Criterion production schedule is focused much, if at all, on timing releases to sync up with quasi-releated new films.

And even if that were the case, is a new James L. Brooks film really such an event? (And if it is, is it one Criterion would want to tie in with or avoid? I can't imagine they'd be too keen on buddying up with another Spanglish)

I'm expecting Mizoguchi and Renoir titles to bookend the Apu trilogy in January. (sigh)

If we're going to go off on things that won't happen I'll be unspeakably pleased if we get either an Imamura doc eclipse or A Man Vanishes on the mainline.

Have they ever commented on a film like this? I know History of Post-War Japan as Told by a Bar Hostess is out in Italy and the most of the other docs are out in Japan. I'm not sure if A Man Vanishes can really constitute as a documentary as well, so I can't imagine it as being in a doc set. It would still make an excellent release but it was a co-production between Nikkatsu and ATG so what's the rights situation on this on?

I'd bet on a mix of your guess and HistoryProf's, really, maybe with one surprise out of nowhere title thrown in as well. January's one of the biggest months, they're gonna pull out the big guns

Rumor has it that the rereleases of Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor will be amongst the January titles.

I'm betting they go all Eastern European and release Jiří Menzel's My Sweet Little Village, Theo Angelopoulos' Ulysses' Gaze, and Emir Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies. Yeah, that's what they're gonna do (because they always give me what I want)!

It's been since House that they've announced a Japanese film, France even longer so they've got to have one from them cooking up.

Well, CriterionCast posted the trailer to Shock Corridor on Facebook. The last two months that's been an automatic giveaway as to what's being released. Honestly, it's about time for both. I've been holding out ever since the first rumblings about re-releases were whispered on this forum to buy them.

well that's kind of cool.

Domino is right though, they usually make January a big month w/ a box set. Maybe my dream of The Emigrants and New Land from Jan Troell will be it! :)

I think Criterion must send out the solicits the day before to retail organizations and that's how Criterion Cast gets their information.

Seems odd that it's an all Hollywood month and that there is only one new title to the collection. (if the Criterion Cast teasers hold up, which past months indicte they will)

Hopefully the blus of Days of Heaven and Robinson Crusoe on Mars indicate that Criterion went for another chunk of the Paramount catalog and we'll see some of those titles that went OOP show up in the collection.
