Anyone knows what Field actually did all these years? Can you live off repeated cancellation of projects?

If he got paid for them, sure.
From the mid-1970s onwards Bruce Robinson earned a pretty decent living writing screenplays that were commissioned (and therefore paid for) but never produced. Off the top of my head, I think The Killing Fields was the first that actually went into production, and that was nearly a decade after he switched from acting to writing.
And he did well enough to be able to personally fork out a five-figure sum for the rights to two Jimi Hendrix songs that he wanted to use in Withnail & I after HandMade Films baulked at the cost.

What a loss to cinema for the last 14 years Todd Field has been if his first two features are anything to go by. We are poorer for it.

It's kind of insane that the gap between the first post on this film and the second is 10 years, and the thread was "started" by a user who hasn't posted here since August 2012. It's indeed very unfortunate that Todd Field hasn't made a film for this long, and I think about it every time I watch Eyes Wide Shut (so... at least 14 times in the last 14 years)

It's been so long I've forgotten to even wonder what happened to Todd Field!
Little Children is just okay to me, but I really liked In the Bedroom so I'm excited to see Field working, especially on a genre film which will be something different from his first two.
