I don't know if this is the case everywhere, but I'm in the Boston Society listed above, and a decent portion of our membership hadn't seen DJANGO. Screening was just this Friday, many couldn't make it, I personally chose to wait till opening day to see it via 35mm... random stuff like this stacks the deck against the latest releases. Personally, I abhor the practice of giving awards in early December for precisely this reason, but the blame certainly can't be levied against individual societies.

I saw The Sapphires on UK release and liked it, Wish You Were Here left me a bit cold when I saw it at the London Film Festival. Lore I'm looking forward to, but it's not out until February here. I've seen very few of the nominated films, but you do have to wonder if people are just voting for a name on a list that they recognize and like or are actually voting for a performance. How you single out Philip Seymour Hoffman and ignore Joaquin Phoenix is beyond me.

It was a French-German co-production. In any event, The Intouchables (which I haven't seen) includes such keywords on its IMDb page as "quadriplegic," "black white friendship," and "based on a true story," is #64 on the IMDb Top 250, and has user reviews pleading "don't look at this as a foreign film," so clearly we already have a winner.
