Sad news about Sir Colin...I have so many of his recordings it was tough to choose which to play in his honor: finally decided on his 1st Peter Grimes with Jon Vickers. RIP.

A couple of obituaries.

Two of my other favorite roles -- as a rather quirky landlord/neighbor in Naruse's Fufu (Married Couple /Husband Wife) and as the father in Yamada's Musuko (My Sons).

I especially loved Summerall's tennis broadcasts. Listening to the smug Patrick McEnroe's inane comments during a recent tournament reminded me how much I miss Summerall. His brand of simple, matter-of-fact commentary is increasingly scarce.

Wow, this is a surprise. Like the article states, he owned one of the few independent theatres in the area, the Beach Theater, which closed down some months back. I had the impression it was the city that was preventing the conversion to non-profit status. Sad that the situation was more complex than that.

Got to hand it to him, though. When he first took charge of it, he did allow at least some screening time for directors like Rivette and Breillat, which needless to say is not very common in these parts. That's why they call it Tampa Bay.

A few clips of the documentary Taken by Storm about Storm and the work his company Hipgnosis did over the years.

Pink Floyd's WISH YOU WERE HERE package is probably his masterpiece, but I also loved Zeppelin's IN THROUGH THE OUTDOOR concept where the front and back of the six different covers represented the view of a pub as seen by each of the six individuals inside.

WYWH is a masterpiece on nearly every level, including the artwork. But I like The Division Bell better because it was my first exposure to Storm's style. In that case, what struck me is that these are things that would seem impossible to realize if they were drawings. But somehow he brought it to life perfectly. He did some fantastic work in the mid-90's for the EMI reissues, especially Obscured By Clouds which had some wonderful nature photography.

Storm Thorgerson also directed a music video for "High Hopes" that's well worth watching. Some of the same striking imagery as the Division Bell artwork, but in motion.

Drugs suck. I've been listening to the recent Cinematic Orchestra record, and I was curious about him because of the piece "Lapis" which he played piano on. I feel awful for the Peralta family to have to go through this, Stacy seems like a very nice guy and is a talented filmmaker.

Oh man, what a terrible loss. His Woodstock performance is flat out legendary, and I could not help but smile while watching Django Unchained this past Friday night. I also watched Collateral again very recently, which includes a snippet of Groove Armada's Hands of Time, which also happens to feature another great vocal performance by Havens.

This one hurts. The Ol' Possum is roadkill at 81.

Rather than the flood of clips of He Stopped Loving Her Today, here he is in his youthful prime covering Leon Payne's Things Have Gone to Pieces. Great suits and haircuts!
