Trumbo (Jay Roach, 2015)

Trumbo is nicely assembled and written in the on-the-nose style of old Hollywood biopics, though it often rises above the limitations of that format on the strength of the monstrously good performances and a crackling script that is surprising in how sharp and funny it is. The biggest off key note is the woeful miscasting of Stuhlberg as Robinson a choice almost as bad as Cromwell cast as hw bush in W. Cranston is flat out brilliant, throughout, but there are just an embarrassment of riches of great supporting performances with actors stealing scenes throughout the film so he's well accompanied and the film balances out despite his dominating work. It's not a great film, but it is quite entertaining and a good highlight for the year.
